Investigation of the momentum distribution of an excited BEC by free expansion: coupling with collective modes

We investigate the evolution of the momentum distribution of a Bose-Einstein condensate subjected to an external small oscillatory perturbation as a function of the in-trap evolution of the condensate after the external perturbation is switched-off. Besides changing its momentum distribution, we observe that the cloud distributes the input energy among its normal collective modes, displaying center-of-mass dipolar mode and quadrupolar mode. While the dipolar mode can be easily disregarded, we show that the momentum distribution is closely tied to the quadrupolar oscillation mode. This convolution hinders the actual momentum distribution.

Nonlinear dependence observed in quadrupolar collective excitation of a trapped BEC

We report the experimental observation of the collective excitations induced in a magnetically trapped 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate. Low-lying mode excitations were studied by tracking the condensate's center-of-mass displacement, and its aspect ratio as a function of the hold time in the trap. We were able to partially control the modes onset by modulating the amplitude of the additional field gradient used to excite the BEC. The measured excitation frequencies were found to be in good agreement with the literature. We have also found that the modulation amplitude was able to change the phase of the center-of-mass oscillation. Finally, an interesting, non-linear dependence was observed on the condensate aspect ratio as a function of the perturbing amplitude which induces the quadrupolar mode.

Spectroscopy of a narrow-line optical pumping transition in dysprosium

We present measurements of the hyperfine coefficients and isotope shifts of the Dy I $683.731 $nm transition, using saturated absorption spectroscopy on an atomic beam. A King Plot is drawn resulting in an updated value for the specific mass shift $δν_\mathrm{684,sms}^\mathrm{164-162}=-534 \pm 17 MHz$. Using fluorescence spectroscopy we measure the excited state lifetime $τ_{684}=1.68(5) μ$s, yielding a linewidth of $γ_\mathrm{684} = 95 \pm 3 kHz$. We give an upper limit to the branching ratio between the two decay channels from the excited state showing that this transition is useable for optical pumping into a dark state and demagnetization cooling.

Confinement-induced collapse of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

We report on the observation of the confinement-induced collapse dynamics of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (dBEC) in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We show that for a fixed interaction strength the collapse can be initiated in-trap by lowering the lattice depth below a critical value. Moreover, a stable dBEC in the lattice may become unstable during the time-of-flight dynamics upon release, due to the combined effect of the anisotropy of the dipolar interactions and inter-site coherence in the lattice.

Dipolar Stabilization of an Attractive Bose Gas in a One Dimensional Lattice

We experimentally show that dipolar interaction can stabilize otherwise unstable many-body systems like an attractive Bose gas. In a one dimensional lattice the repulsive dipolar on-site interaction balances negative scattering lengths up to -17 Bohr radii and stabilizes the chromium Bose-Einstein condensate. For reduced lattice depths, the dipolar stabilization turns into destabilization. We probe the full cross-over between the two regimes and our results are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations, which reveal significant dipolar inter-site interactions.

Route to turbulence in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate

We have studied a Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{87}Rb$ atoms under an oscillatory excitation. For a fixed frequency of excitation, we have explored how the values of amplitude and time of excitation must be combined in order to produce quantum turbulence in the condensate. Depending on the combination of these parameters different behaviors are observed in the sample. For the lowest values of time and amplitude of excitation, we observe a bending of the main axis of the cloud. Increasing the amplitude of excitation we observe an increasing number of vortices. The vortex state can evolve into the turbulent regime if the parameters of excitation are driven up to a certain set of combinations. If the value of the parameters of these combinations is exceeded, all vorticity disappears and the condensate enters into a different regime which we have identified as the granular phase. Our results are summarized in a diagram of amplitude versus time of excitation in which the different structures can be identified. We also present numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation which support our observations.

Collective excitation of a Bose-Einstein condensate by modulation of the atomic scattering length

We excite the lowest-lying quadrupole mode of a Bose-Einstein condensate by modulating the atomic scattering length via a Feshbach resonance. Excitation occurs at various modulation frequencies, and resonances located at the natural quadrupole frequency of the condensate and at the first harmonic are observed. We also investigate the amplitude of the excited mode as a function of modulation depth. Numerical simulations based on a variational calculation agree with our experimental results and provide insight into the observed behavior.

Three-vortex configurations in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We report on the creation of three-vortex clusters in a $^{87}Rb$ Bose-Einstein condensate by oscillatory excitation of the condensate. This procedure can create vortices of both circulation, so that we are able to create several types of vortex clusters using the same mechanism. The three-vortex configurations are dominated by two types, namely, an equilateral-triangle arrangement and a linear arrangement. We interpret these most stable configurations respectively as three vortices with the same circulation, and as a vortex-antivortex-vortex cluster. The linear configurations are very likely the first experimental signatures of predicted stationary vortex clusters.

Generation of vortices and observation of Quantum Turbulence in an oscillating Bose-Einstein Condensate

We report on the experimental observation of vortex formation and production of tangled vortex distribution in an atomic BEC of Rb-87 atoms submitted to an external oscillatory perturbation. The oscillatory perturbations start by exciting quadrupolar and scissors modes of the condensate. Then regular vortices are observed finally evolving to a vortex tangle configuration. The vortex tangle is a signature of the presence of a turbulent regime in the cloud. We also show that this turbulent cloud has suppression of the aspect ratio inversion typically observed in quantum degenerate bosonic gases during free expansion.

Achievement of Quantum Degeneracy in a Na-QUIC trap in Brazil: an in situ observation

Using a system composed of a Quadrupole and Ioffe Configuration (QUIC) trap loaded from a slowed atomic beam, we have performed experiments to observe the Bose-Einstein Condensation of Na atoms. In order to obtain the atomic distribution in the trap, we use an in situ out of resonance absorption image through a probe beam, to determine temperature and density. The phase space density (D) is calculated using the density profile and the temperature. We have followed D as a function of the final evaporation frequency. The results show that at 1.65 MHz we crossed the value for D expected to correspond to the critical point to start de Bose-Condensation of the sample. Due to the low number of atoms remaining in the trap at the critical point, the interaction produces minor effects and therefore an ideal gas model explains well the observations. We analyze the obtained low number in terms of efficiency of evaporation. The utility of an in situ detection is illustrated by measuring the harmonic gas pressure of the trapped gas in the route to condensation.

Creating a self-induced dark spontaneous-force optical trap for neutral atoms

This communication describes the observation of a new type of dark spontaneous-force optical trap (dark SPOT) obtained without the use of a mask blocking the central part of the repumper laser beam. We observe that loading a magneto-optical trap (MOT) from a continuous and intense flux of slowed atoms and by appropriately tuning the frequency of the repumper laser is possible to achieve basically the same effect of the dark SPOT, using a simpler apparatus. This work characterizes the new system through measurements of absorption and fluorescence imaging of the atomic cloud and presents a very simple model to explain the main features of our observations. We believe that this new approach may simplify the current experiments to produce quantum degenerated gases.
