Bringing the 'perfect lens' into focus by near-perfect compensation of losses without gain media

In this paper, the optical properties and imaging performance of a non-ideal Pendry's negative index flat lens with a practical value for loss are studied. Analytical calculations of the optical properties of the lens are performed, and those results are used to further study the lens and corresponding imaging system numerically. The plasmon injection scheme for loss compensation in negative index metamaterials is applied to the results from the imaging system, resulting in a perfect reconstruction of a previously unresolved image that demonstrates sub-diffraction-limit resolution.

Enhancing the resolution of hyperlens by the compensation of losses without gain media

We present a method to improve the resolution of available hyperlenses in the literature. In this method, we combine the operation of hyperlens with the recently proposed plasmon injection scheme for loss compensation in metamaterials. Image of an object, which is otherwise not resolvable by the hyperlens alone, was reconstructed up to the minimum feature size of one seventh of the free-space wavelength.

Perfect compensation of absorption in metamaterials for diffraction-unlimited imaging

To overcome the resolution limit of conventional optics, near field imaging techniques using a negative index flat lens (NIFL) have been previously developed that amplify the evanescent components of the incident field. Here, a technique is developed and demonstrated to compensate for losses in a non-ideal NIFL by determining the transfer function of the lens and subsequently applying the inverse to the unresolved raw image. The result is a compensated image with sub-diffraction-limited resolution.

Distillation of photon entanglement using a plasmonic metamaterial

Plasmonics is a rapidly emerging platform for quantum state engineering with the potential for building ultra-compact and hybrid optoelectronic devices. Recent experiments have shown that despite the presence of decoherence and loss, photon statistics and entanglement can be preserved in single plasmonic systems. This preserving ability should carry over to plasmonic metamaterials, whose properties are the result of many individual plasmonic systems acting collectively, and can be used to engineer optical states of light. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of quantum state filtering, also known as entanglement distillation, using a metamaterial. We show that the metamaterial can be used to distill highly entangled states from less entangled states. As the metamaterial can be integrated with other optical components this work opens up the intriguing possibility of incorporating plasmonic metamaterials in on-chip quantum state engineering tasks.

Hyperbolic Metamaterial Feasible for Fabrication with Direct Laser Writing Processes

Stimulated emission depletion microscopy inspired direct laser writing (STED-DLW) processes can offer diffraction-unlimited fabrication of 3D-structures, not possible with traditional electron-beam or optical lithography. We propose a hyperbolic metamaterial for fabrication with STED-DLW. First, we design meandering wire structures with three different magnetic dipoles which can be excited under different incidences of light. Then, based on effective parameters corresponding to normal incidence and lateral incidence, we find that the hyperbolic dispersion relation for five-layer structure appears between 15THz to 20THz. Finally, we investigate the influence of imaginary parts of the effective parameters on the metamaterial dispersion. The proposed metamaterial structure has also potential for three-dimensionally isotropic permeability despite geometric anisotropy.

Plasmon Injection to Compensate and Control Losses in Negative Index Metamaterials

Metamaterials have introduced a whole new world of unusual materials with functionalities that cannot be attained in naturally occurring material systems by mimicking and controlling the natural phenomena at subwavelength scales. However, the inherent absorption losses pose fundamental challenge to the most fascinating applications of metamaterials. Based on a novel plasmon injection (PI or Π) scheme, we propose a coherent optical amplification technique to compensate losses in metamaterials. Although the proof of concept device here operates under normal incidence only, our proposed scheme can be generalized to arbitrary form of incident waves. The Π-scheme is fundamentally different than major optical amplification schemes. It does not require gain medium, interaction with phonons, or any nonlinear medium. The Π-scheme allows for loss-free metamaterials. It is ideally suited for mitigating losses in metamaterials operating in the visible spectrum and is scalable to other optical frequencies. These findings open the possibility of reviving the early dreams of making 'magical' metamaterials from scratch.

Exchanging Ohmic Losses in Metamaterial Absorbers with Useful Optical Absorption for Photovoltaics

Using metamaterial absorbers, we have shown that metallic layers in the absorbers do not necessarily constitute undesired resistive heating problem for photovoltaics. Tailoring the geometric skin depth of metals and employing the natural bulk absorbance characteristics of the semiconductors in those absorbers can enable the exchange of undesired resistive losses with the useful optical absorbance in the active semiconductors. Thus, Ohmic loss dominated metamaterial absorbers can be converted into photovoltaic near-perfect absorbers with the advantage of harvesting the full potential of light management offered by the metamaterial absorbers. Based on experimental permittivity data for indium gallium nitride, we have shown that between 75%-95% absorbance can be achieved in the semiconductor layers of the converted metamaterial absorbers. Besides other metamaterial and plasmonic devices, our results may also apply to photodectors and other metal or semiconductor based optical devices where resistive losses and power consumption are important pertaining to the device performance.

Multi-resonant silver nano-disk patterned thin film hydrogenated amorphous silicon solar cells for Staebler-Wronski effect compensation

We study polarization independent improved light trapping in commercial thin film hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) solar photovoltaic cells using a three-dimensional silver array of multi-resonant nano-disk structures embedded in a silicon nitride anti-reflection coating (ARC) to enhance optical absorption in the intrinsic layer (i-a-Si:H) for the visible spectrum for any polarization angle. Predicted total optical enhancement (OE) in absorption in the i-a-Si:H for AM-1.5 solar spectrum is 18.51% as compared to the reference, and producing a 19.65% improvement in short-circuit current density (JSC) over 11.7 mA/cm2 for a reference cell. The JSC in the nano-disk patterned solar cell (NDPSC) was found to be higher than the commercial reference structure for any incident angle. The NDPSC has a multi-resonant optical response for the visible spectrum and the associated mechanism for OE in i-a-Si:H layer is excitation of Fabry-Perot resonance facilitated by surface plasmon resonances. The detrimental Staebler-Wronski effect (SWE) in a-Si:H solar cell can be minimized by the additional OE in the NDPSC and self-annealing of defect states by additional heat generation, thus likely improving the overall stabilized characteristics of a-Si:H solar cells.

Dual-band, double-negative, polarization-independent metamaterial for the visible spectrum

We present the first dual-band negative index metamaterial that operates in the visible spectrum. The optimized four-functional-layer metamaterial structure exhibits the first double-negative (i.e., simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability) band in the red region of the visible spectrum with a figure of merit of 1.7 and the second double-negative band in the green region of the visible spectrum with a figure of merit of 3.2. The optical behavior of the proposed structure is independent of the polarization of the incident field. This low-loss metamaterial structure can be treated as a modified version of a fishnet metamaterial structure with an additional metal layer of different thickness in a single functional layer. The additional metal layer extends the diluted plasma frequency deep into the visible spectrum above the second order magnetic resonance of the structure, hence provides a dual band operation with simultaneously negative effective permittivity and permeability. Broadband metamaterials with multiple negative index bands may be possible with the same technique by employing higher order magnetic resonances. The structure can be fabricated with standard microfabrication techniques that have been used to fabricate fishnet metamaterial structures.

On Negative Index Metamaterial Spacers and Their Unusual Optical Properties

We theoretically investigate the possibility of using a metamaterial structure as a spacer, named as metaspacer, which can be integrated with other materials in microfabrication. We show that such metaspacers can provide new optical behaviors that are not possible through conventional spacers. In particular, we investigate negative index metaspacers embedded in fishnet metamaterial structures and compare them with conventional fishnet metamaterial structures. We show that the negative index metaspacer based fishnet structure exhibits intriguing inverted optical response. We also observe that the dependence of the resonance frequency on the geometric parameters is reversed. We conclude with practicality of these metaspacers.

Surface plasmon driven scalable low-loss negative-index metamaterials at visible spectrum

We demonstrate that surface plasmons of a thin metal film interacting with a periodic array of nano-structures around it can be utilized to make bulk negative index metamaterials at visible spectrum with simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability. These surface plasmon driven metamaterials have high figure of merit and can be tuned arbitrarily to operate at any wavelength in the visible spectrum and possibly at ultraviolet spectrum. We numerically demonstrate the idea by a metamaterial structure which exhibits a strong magnetic response resulting in a negative index of refraction in the green region of the electromagnetic spectrum at 536nm with a figure of merit of 3.67. We also demonstrate by simply changing the constituent material only, hence by modifying the underlying surface plasmon dispersion, that the operating wavelength of the structure can be blue-shifted to the violet region at 406nm with a figure of merit of 2.27. In contrast to the fishnet-structure based approaches for visible metamaterials, our proposed approach offers a more frequency scalable way of achieving negative index of refraction in the visible and possibly at ultraviolet wavelengths with high figure of merit.

Creation of Entanglement and Implementation of Quantum Logic Gate Operations Using a Three-Dimensional Photonic Crystal Single-Mode Cavity

We solve the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian with time-dependent coupling parameters under dipole and rotating-wave approximation for a three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystal (PC) single mode cavity with a sufficiently high quality (Q) factor. We then exploit the results to show how to create a maximally entangled state of two atoms, and how to implement several quantum logic gates: a dual-rail Hadamard gate, a dual-rail NOT gate, and a SWAP gate. The atoms in all of these operations are syncronized, which is not the case in previous studies [1,2] in PCs. Our method has the potential for extension to N-atom entanglement, universal quantum logic operations, and the implementation of other useful, cavity QED based quantum information processing tasks.

Integrated Conditional Teleportation and Readout Circuit Based on a Photonic Crystal Single Chip

We demonstrate the design of an integrated conditional quantum teleportation circuit and a readout circuit using a two-dimensional photonic crystal single chip. Fabrication and testing of the proposed quantum circuit can be accomplished with current or near future semiconductor process technology and experimental techniques. The readout part of our device, which has potential for independent use as an atomic interferometer, can also be used on its own or integrated with other compatible optical circuits to achieve atomic state detection. Further improvement of the device in terms of compactness and robustness could be achieved by integrating it with sources and detectors in the optical regime.
