Graded Bourbaki ideals of graded modules

In this paper we study graded Bourbaki ideals. It is a well-known fact that for torsionfree modules over Noetherian normal domains, Bourbaki sequences exist. We give criteria in terms of certain attached matrices for a homomorphism of modules to induce a Bourbaki sequence. Special attention is given to graded Bourbaki sequences. In the second part of the paper, we apply these results to the Koszul cycles of the residue class field and determine particular Bourbaki ideals explicitly. We also obtain in a special case the relationship between the structure of the Rees algebra of a Koszul cycle and the Rees algebra of its Bourbaki ideal.

The trace of the canonical module

The trace of the canonical module (the canonical trace) determines the non-Gorenstein locus of a local Cohen--Macaulay ring. We call a local Cohen--Macaulay ring nearly Gorenstein, if its canonical trace contains the maximal ideal. Similar definitions can be made for positively graded Cohen--Macaulay $K$-algebras. We study the canonical trace for tensor products and Segre products of algebras, as well as of (squarefree) Veronese subalgebras. The results are used to classify the nearly Gorenstein Hibi rings. We study connections between the class of nearly Gorenstein rings and that of almost Gorenstein rings. We show that in dimension one, the former class includes the latter.

Ulrich elements in normal simplicial affine semigroups

Let $H\subseteq \mathbb{N}^d$ be a normal affine semigroup, $R=K[H]$ its semigroup ring over the field $K$ and $ω_R$ its canonical module. The Ulrich elements for $H$ are those $h$ in $H$ such that for the multiplication map by $\mathbf{x}^h$ from $R$ into $ω_R$, the cokernel is an Ulrich module. We say that the ring $R$ is almost Gorenstein if Ulrich elements exist in $H$. For the class of slim semigroups that we introduce, we provide an algebraic criterion for testing the Ulrich propery. When $d=2$, all normal affine semigroups are slim. Here we have a simpler combinatorial description of the Ulrich property. We improve this result for testing the elements in $H$ which are closest to zero. In particular, we give a simple arithmetic criterion for when is $(1,1)$ an Ulrich element in $H$.

On the Cohen-Macaulay property for quadratic tangent cones

Let $H$ be an $n$-generated numerical semigroup such that its tangent cone $\operatorname{gr}_\mathfrak{m} K[H]$ is defined by quadratic relations. We show that if $n<5$ then $\operatorname{gr}_\mathfrak{m} K[H]$ is Cohen-Macaulay, and for $n=5$ we explicitly describe the semigroups $H$ such that $\operatorname{gr}_\mathfrak{m} K[H]$ is not Cohen-Macaulay. As an application we show that if the field $K$ is algebraically closed and of characteristic different from two, and $n\leq 5$ then $\operatorname{gr}_\mathfrak{m} K[H]$ is Koszul if and only if (possibly after a change of coordinates) its defining ideal has a quadratic Gröbner basis.

On the defining equations of the tangent cone of a numerical semigroup ring

Let $\mathbf{a} = a_1 <\dots < a_r$ be a sequence of positive integers, and let $H_{\mathbf{a}}$ denote the semigroup generated by $a_1, \dots, a_r$. For an integer $k\geq 0$ we denote by $\mathbf{a}+k$ the shifted sequence $a_1 +k, \dots, a_r +k$. Fix a field $K$. We show that for all $k \gg 0$ the associated graded ring of the semigroup ring $K[H_{\mathbf{a}+k}]$ is Cohen--Macaulay and that it has the same Betti numbers as $K[H_{\mathbf{a}+k}]$ itself. As a consequence, we show that the number of defining equations of the tangent cone of a numerical semigroup ring is bounded by a value depending only on the width of the semigroup, where the width of a numerical semigroup is defined to be the difference of the largest and the smallest element in the minimal generating set of the semigroup. We also provide a conjectured upper bound of the above number of equations and we verify it in some cases.

Koszul incidence algebras, affine semigroups, and Stanley-Reisner ideals

We prove a theorem unifying three results from combinatorial homological and commutative algebra, characterizing the Koszul property for incidence algebras of posets and affine semigroup rings, and characterizing linear resolutions of squarefree monomial ideals. The characterization in the graded setting is via the Cohen-Macaulay property of certain posets or simplicial complexes, and in the more general nongraded setting, via the sequential Cohen-Macaulay property.
