The Herman invariant tori conjecture

We study a new type of normal form at a critical point of an analytic Hamiltonian. Under a Bruno condition on the frequency, we prove a convergence statement to the normal form. Using this result, we prove the Herman invariant tori conjecture namely the existence of a positive measure set of invariant tori near the critical point. This paper is an update of the first 2012 proof of the author. The functional analytic arguments have been simplified using Banach functors, minor points have been clarified. Quasi-periodic motions on symplectic tori

The KAM (Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser) theorem guarantees the stability of quasi-periodic invariant tori by perturbation in some Hamiltonian systems. Michel Herman proved a similar result for quasi-periodic motions, with $k$-dimensional involutive manifolds in Hamiltonian systems with $n$ degrees of freedom $n \leq k < 2n $. In this paper, we extend this result to the case of a quasi-periodic motion on symplectic tori $k = 2n$.

The Spectrum of Hypersurface Singularities

This text is the write-up of a series of lectures on the asymptotic mixed Hodge theory of isolated hypersurface singularities, held at the Third Latin American school on Algebraic Geometry and its applications (ELGA 3) in Guanajuato, Mexico, in august 2017. Its focus is on the classical application of the semi-continuity of the spectrum due to Varchenko and Steenbrink to the problem of bounding the possible singularities on a projective hypersurface.

Logarithmic vector fields and the Severi strata in the discriminant

The discriminant, $D$, in the base of a miniversal deformation of an irreducible plane curve singularity, is partitioned according to the genus of the (singular) fibre, or, equivalently, by the sum of the delta invariants of the singular points of the fibre. The members of the partition are known as the {\it Severi strata}. The smallest is the $δ$-constant stratum, $D(δ)$, where the genus of the fibre is $0$. It is well known, by work of Givental' and Varchenko, to be Lagrangian with respect to the symplectic form $Ω$ obtained by pulling back the intersection form on the cohomology of the fibre via the period mapping. We show that the remaining Severi strata are also co-isotropic with respect to $Ω$, and moreover that the coefficients of the expression of $Ω^{\wedge k}$ with respect to a basis of $Ω^{2k}(\log D)$ are equations for $D(δ-k+1)$, for $k=1,\ldots,δ$. These equations allow us to show that for $E_6$ and $E_8$, $D(δ)$ is Cohen-Macaulay (this was already shown by Givental' for $A_{2k}$), and that, as far as we can calculate, for $A_{2k}$ all of the Severi strata are Cohen-Macaulay. Our construction also produces a canonical rank 2 maximal Cohen Macaulay module on the discriminant.

Twisted cubics on cubic fourfolds

We construct a new twenty-dimensional family of projective eight-dimensional irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds: the compactified moduli space M_3(Y) of twisted cubics on a smooth cubic fourfold Y that does not contain a plane is shown to be smooth and to admit a contraction M_3(Y) -> Z(Y) to a projective eight-dimensional symplectic manifold Z(Y). The construction is based on results on linear determinantal representations of singular cubic surfaces.

Lines on the Dwork Pencil of Quintic Threefolds

We present an explicit parametrization of the families of lines of the Dwork pencil of quintic threefolds. This gives rise to isomorphic curves which parametrize the lines. These curves are 125:1 covers of certain genus six curves. These genus six curves are first presented as curves in P^1*P^1 that have three nodes. It is natural to blow up P^1*P^1 in the three points corresponding to the nodes in order to produce smooth curves. The result of blowing up P^1*P^1 in three points is the quintic del Pezzo surface dP_5, whose automorphism group is the permutation group S_5, which is also a symmetry of the pair of genus six curves. The subgroup A_5, of even permutations, is an automorphism of each curve, while the odd permutations interchange the two curves. The ten exceptional curves of dP_5 each intersect each of the genus six curves in two points corresponding to van Geemen lines. We find, in this way, what should have anticipated from the outset, that the genus six curves are the curves of the Wiman pencil. We consider the family of lines also for the cases that the manifolds of the Dwork pencil become singular. For the conifold the genus six curves develop six nodes and may be resolved to a P^1. The group A_5 acts on this P^1 and we describe this action.

Hodge classes associated to 1-parameter families of Calabi-Yau 3-folds

We use $L^2$-Higgs cohomology to determine the Hodge numbers of the parabolic cohomology $H^1(\bar S, j_*\V)$, where the local system $\V$ arises from the third primitive cohomology of family of Calabi-Yau threefolds over a curve $\bar S$. The method gives a way to predict the presence of algebraic 2-cycles in the total space of the family and is applied to some examples.

On the monodromy of the moduli space of Calabi-Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in $\mathbb{P}^3$

It is a fundamental problem in geometry to decide which moduli spaces of polarized algebraic varieties are embedded by their period maps as Zariski open subsets of locally Hermitian symmetric domains. In the present work we prove that the moduli space of Calabi-Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in $\mathbb{P}^3$ does {\em not} have this property. We show furthermore that the monodromy group of a good family is Zariski dense in the corresponding symplectic group. Moreover, we study a natural sublocus which we call hyperelliptic locus, over which the variation of Hodge structures is naturally isomorphic to wedge product of a variation of Hodge structures of weight one. It turns out the hyperelliptic locus does not extend to a Shimura subvariety of type III (Siegel space) within the moduli space. Besides general Hodge theory, representation theory and computational commutative algebra, one of the proofs depends on a new result on the tensor product decomposition of complex polarized variations of Hodge structures.

Infinitesimal deformations of double covers of smooth algebraic varieties

The goal of this paper is to give a method to compute the space of infinitesimal deformations of a double cover of a smooth algebraic variety. The space of all infinitesimal deformations has a representation as a direct sum of two subspaces. One is isomorphic to the space of simultaneous deformations of the branch locus and the base of the double covering. The second summand is the subspace of deformations of the double covering which induce trivial deformations of the branch divisor. The main result of the paper is a description of the effect of imposing singularities in the branch locus. As a special case we study deformations of Calabi--Yau threefolds which are non--singular models of double cover of the projective 3--space branched along an octic surface. We show that in that case the number of deformations can be computed explicitly using computer algebra systems. This gives a method to compute the Hodge numbers of these Calabi--Yau manifolds. In this case the transverse deformations are resolutions of deformations of double covers of projective space but not double covers of a blow--up of projective space. In the paper we gave many explicit examples.

Mirror Symmetry and Toric Degenerations of Partial Flag Manifolds

In this paper we propose and discuss a mirror construction for complete intersections in partial flag manifolds $F(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$. This construction includes our previous mirror construction for complete intersection in Grassmannians and the mirror construction of Givental for complete flag manifolds. The key idea of our construction is a degeneration of $F(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ to a certain Gorenstein toric Fano variety $P(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ which has been investigated by Gonciulea and Lakshmibai. We describe a natural small crepant desingularization of $P(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ and prove a generalized version of a conjecture of Gonciulea and Lakshmibai on the singular locus of $P(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$.
