On the volumes of linear subvarieties in moduli spaces of projectivized Abelian differentials

For $k \in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$, let $\mathcal{H}^{(k)}_{g,n}$ denote the vector bundle over $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$ whose every fiber consists of meromorphic $k$-differentials with poles of order at most $k-1$ on a fixed Riemman surface of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points (all the poles must be located at the marked points). The bundle $\mathcal{H}^{(k)}_{g,n}$ and its associated projective bundle $\mathbb{P}\mathcal{H}^{(k)}_{g,n}$ admit natural extensions, denoted by $\overline{\mathcal{H}}^{(k)}_{g,n}$ and $\mathbb{P}\overline{\mathcal{H}}^{(k)}_{g,n}$ respectively, to the Deligne-Mumford compactification $\overline{\mathfrak{M}}_{g,n}$ of $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$. We prove the following statement: let $\mathcal{M}$ be a subvariety of dimension $d$ of the projective bundle $\mathbb{P}\mathcal{H}^{(k)}_{g,n}$. Denote by $\mathscr{O}(-1)_{\mathbb{P}\overline{\mathcal{H}}^{(k)}_{g,n}}$ the tautological line bundle over $\mathbb{P}\overline{\mathcal{H}}^{(k)}_{g,n}$. Then the integral of the $d$-th power of the curvature form of the Hodge norm on $\mathscr{O}(-1)_{\mathbb{P}\overline{\mathcal{H}}^{(k)}_{g,n}}$ over the smooth part of $\mathcal{M}$ is equal to the intersection number of the $d$-th power of the divisor representing $\mathscr{O}(-1)_{\mathbb{P}\overline{\mathcal{H}}^{(k)}_{g,n}}$ and the closure of $\mathcal{M}$ in $\mathbb{P}\overline{\mathcal{H}}^{(k)}_{g,n}$. As a consequence, if $\mathcal{M}$ is a linear subvariety of the projectivized Hodge bundle $\mathbb{P}\mathcal{H}_{g,n}(=\mathbb{P}\mathcal{H}^{(1)}_{g,n})$ whose local coordinates do not involve relative periods, then the volume of $\mathcal{M}$ can be computed by the self-intersection number of the tautological line bundle on the closure of $\mathcal{M}$ in $\mathbb{P}\overline{\mathcal{H}}_{g,n}(=\mathbb{P}\overline{\mathcal{H}}^{(1)}_{g,n})$.

Topological Veech dichotomy and tessellations of the hyperbolic plane

For every half-translation surface with marked points $(M,Σ)$, we construct an associated tessellation $Π(M,Σ)$ of the Poincaré upper half plane whose tiles have finitely many sides and area at most $π$. The tessellation $Π(M,Σ)$ is equivariant with respect to the action of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$, and invariant with respect to (half-)translation covering. In the case $(M,Σ)$ is the torus $\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Z}^2$ with a one marked point, $Π(\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Z}^2,\{0\})$ coincides with the iso-Delaunay tessellation introduced by Veech as both tessellations give the Farey tessellation. As application, we obtain a bound on the volume of the corresponding Teichmüller curve in the case $(M,Σ)$ is a Veech surface (lattice surface). Under the assumption that $(M,Σ)$ satisfies the topological Veech dichotomy, there is a natural graph $\mathcal{G}$ underlying $Π(M,Σ)$ on which the Veech group $Γ$ acts by automorphisms. We show that $\mathcal{G}$ has infinite diameter and is Gromov hyperbolic. Furthermore, the quotient $\overline{\mathcal{G}}:=\mathcal{G}/Γ$ is a finite graph if and only if $(M,Σ)$ is actually a Veech surface, in which case we provide an algorithm to determine the graph $\overline{\mathcal{G}}$ explicitly. This algorithm also allows one to get a generating family and a "coarse" fundamental domain of the Veech group $Γ$.

Complex hyperbolic volume and intersection of boundary divisors in moduli spaces of genus zero curves

We show that the complex hyperbolic metrics defined by Deligne-Mostow and Thurston on ${\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ are singular Kähler-Einstein metrics when ${\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ is embedded in the Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen compactification $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$. As a consequence, we obtain a formula computing the volumes of ${\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ with respect to these metrics using intersection of boundary divisors of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$. In the case of rational weights, following an idea of Y. Kawamata, we show that these metrics actually represent the first Chern class of some line bundles on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, from which other formulas computing the same volumes are derived.

Classification of higher rank orbit closures in H^{odd}(4)

The moduli space of genus 3 translation surfaces with a single zero has two connected components. We show that in the odd connected component H^{odd}(4) the only GL^+(2,R) orbit closures are closed orbits, the Prym locus Q(3,-1^3), and H^{odd}(4). Together with work of Matheus-Wright, this implies that there are only finitely many non-arithmetic closed orbits (Teichmuller curves) in H^{odd}(4) outside of the Prym locus.

Connected components of Prym eigenform loci in genus three

This paper is devoted to the classification of connected components of Prym eigenform loci in the strata H(2,2)^odd and H(1,1,2) in the Abelian differentials bundle in genus 3. These loci, discovered by McMullen are GL^+(2,R)-invariant submanifolds (of complex dimension 3) that project to the locus of Riemann surfaces whose Jacobian variety has a factor admitting real multiplication by some quadratic order Ord_D. It turns out that these subvarieties can be classified by the discriminant D of the corresponding quadratic orders. However there algebraic varieties are not necessarily irreducible. The main result we show is that for each discriminant D the corresponding locus has one component if D is congruent to 0 or 4 mod 8, two components if D is congruent to 1 mod 8, and is empty otherwise. Our result contrasts with the case of Prym eigenform loci in the strata H(1,1) (studied by McMullen) that is connected for every discriminant D.

GL^+(2,R)-orbits in Prym eigenform loci

This paper is devoted to the classification of GL^+(2,R)-orbit closures of surfaces in the intersection of the Prym eigenform locus with various strata of quadratic differentials. We show that the following dichotomy holds: an orbit is either closed or dense in a connected component of the Prym eigenform locus. The proof uses several topological properties of Prym eigenforms, which are proved by the authors in a previous work. In particular the tools and the proof are independent of the recent results of Eskin-Mirzakhani-Mohammadi. As an application we obtain a finiteness result for the number of closed GL^+(2,R)-orbits (not necessarily primitive) in the Prym eigenform locus Prym_D(2,2) for any fixed D that is not a square.

Non-Veech surfaces in H^hyp(4) are generic

We show that every surface in H^hyp(4) is either a Veech surface or a generic surface, i.e. its GL^+(2,R)-orbit is either a closed or a dense subset of H^hyp(4) . The proof develops new techniques applicable in general to the problem of classifying orbit closures, especially in low genus. Recent results of Eskin-Mirzakhani-Mohammadi, Avila-Eskin-Möller, and the second author are used. Combined with work of Matheus and the second author, a corollary is that there are at most finitely many non-arithmetic Teichmüller curves (closed orbits of surfaces not covering the torus) in H^hyp(4).

Complete periodicity of Prym eigenforms

This paper deals with Prym eigenforms which are introduced previously by McMullen. We prove several results on the directional flow on those surfaces, related to complete periodicity (introduced by Calta). More precisely we show that any homological direction is algebraically periodic, and any direction of a regular closed geodesic is a completely periodic direction. As a consequence we draw that the limit set of the Veech group of every Prym eigenform in some Prym loci of genus 3,4, and 5 is either empty, one point, or the full circle at infinity. We also construct new examples of translation surfaces satisfying the topological Veech dichotomy. As a corollary we obtain new translation surfaces whose Veech group is infinitely generated and of the first kind.

On the topology of H(2)

In this paper, we first single out a proper subgroup Γof Sp(4,Z) generated by three elements, which arises from the parallelogram decompositions of translation surfaces in H(2). We then prove that the space H(2)/C* can be identified to the quotient J_2/Γ, where J_2 is the Jacobian locus in the Siegel upper half space H_2, in other words, the group Γis the image in Sp(4,Z) of the fundamental group of the space H(2)/C*. A direct consequence of this fact is that [Sp(4,Z):Γ]=6.

Teichmueller curves generated by Weierstrass Prym eigenforms in genus three and genus four

This paper is devoted to the classification of the infinite families of Teichmuller curves generated by Prym eigenforms of genus 3 having a single zero. These curves were discovered by McMullen. The main invariants of our classification is the discriminant D of the corresponding quadratic order, and the generators of this order. It turns out that for D sufficiently large, there are two Teichmueller curves when D=1 modulo 8, only one Teichmueller curve when D=0,4 modulo 8, and no Teichmueller curves when D=5 modulo 8. For small values of D, where this classification is not necessarily true, the number of Teichmueller curves can be determined directly. The ingredients of our proof are first, a description of these curves in terms of prototypes and models, and then a careful analysis of the combinatorial connectedness in the spirit of McMullen. As a consequence, we obtain a description of cusps of Teichmueller curves given by Prym eigenforms. We would like also to emphasis that even though we have the same statement compared to, when D=1 modulo 8, the reason for this disconnectedness is different. The classification of these Teichmueller curves plays a key role in our investigation of the dynamics of SL(2,R) on the intersection of the Prym eigenform locus with the stratum H(2,2), which is the object of a forthcoming paper.

Energy functions on moduli spaces of flat surfaces with erasing forest

Flat surfaces with erasing forest are obtained by deforming the flat metric structure of translation surfaces, the moduli space of such surfaces is a deformation of the moduli space of translation surfaces. On the moduli space of flat surfaces with erasing forest, one can define some energy function involving the area of the surface, and the total length of the erasing forest. Note that on this space, we have a volume form which is defined by using geodesic triangulations. The aim of this paper is to prove that the integral of the energy functions mentionned above with respect to this volume form is finite. As applications, we will use this result to recover some classical results due to Masur-Veech, and Thurston.

Parallelogram decompositions and generic surfaces in H^{hyp}(4)

In this paper we are interested in the stratum H^{hyp}(4) of translation surfaces, which consists of pairs (M,ω), where M is a hyper-elliptic Riemann surface of genus 3, and ωis a holopmorphic 1-form on M having only one zero. We first show that every surface in this stratum can be decomposed into parallelograms following a unique model. We then single out a condition on this decomposition, and show that if this condition is satisfied then the SL(2,R) orbit of the surface is dense in the stratum. Using this criterion, we show that there are generic surfaces in this stratum with coordinates in any quadratic field, and that surfaces arising from the Thurston-Veech construction with cubic trace field can be generic.

Triangulations and volume form on moduli spaces of flat surfaces

In this paper, we are interested in flat metric structures with conical singularities on surfaces which are obtained by deforming translation surface structures. The moduli space of such flat metric structures can be viewed as some deformation of the moduli space of translation surfaces. Using geodesic triangulations, we define a volume form on this moduli space, and show that, in the well-known cases, this volume form agrees with usual ones, up to a multiplicative constant.
