Spin-orbit torque switching of perpendicular magnetization in ferromagnetic trilayers

In ferromagnetic trilayers, a spin-orbit-induced spin current can have a spin polarization of which direction is deviated from that for the spin Hall effect. Recently, magnetization switching in ferromagnetic trilayers has been proposed and confirmed by the experiments. In this work, we theoretically and numerically investigate the switching current required for perpendicular magnetization switching in ferromagnetic trilayers. We confirm that the tilted spin polarization enables field-free deterministic switching at a lower current than conventional spin-orbit torque or spin-transfer torque switching, offering a possibility for high-density and low-power spin-orbit torque devices. Moreover, we provide analytical expressions of the switching current for an arbitrary spin polarization direction, which will be useful to design spin-orbit torque devices and to interpret spin-orbit torque switching experiments.

Effect of inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on antiferromagnetic spin-wave propagation

We investigate the effect of inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) on antiferromagnetic spin-wave propagation theoretically and numerically. We find that antiferromagnetic spin waves can be amplified at a boundary where the DMI varies. The inhomogeneous DMI also provides a way to construct a magnonic crystal with forbidden and allowed antiferromagnetic spin-wave bands in terahertz frequency ranges. In contrast to ferromagnetic spin waves, antiferromagnetic spin waves experience a polarization-dependent phase shift when passing through the inhomogeneous DMI, offering a magnonic crystal that also serves as a spin-wave polarizer.

Highly sensitive and selective sugar detection by terahertz nano-antennas

Molecular recognition and discrimination of carbohydrates are important because carbohydrates perform essential roles in most living organisms for energy metabolism and cell-to-cell communication. Nevertheless, it is difficult to identify or distinguish various carbohydrate molecules owing to the lack of a significant distinction in the physical or chemical characteristics. Although there has been considerable effort to develop a sensing platform for individual carbohydrates selectively using chemical receptors or an ensemble array, their detection and discrimination limits have been as high in the millimolar concentration range. Here we show a highly sensitive and selective detection method for the discrimination of carbohydrate molecules using nano-slot-antenna array-based sensing chips which operate in the terahertz frequency range. This THz metamaterial sensing tool recognizes various types of carbohydrate molecules over a wide range of molecular concentrations. Strongly localized and enhanced terahertz transmission by nano-antennas can effectively increase the molecular absorption cross sections, thereby enabling the detection of these molecules even at low concentrations. We verified the performance of nano-antenna sensing chip by both THz spectra and images of transmittance. Screening and identification of various carbohydrates can be applied to test even real market beverages with a high sensitivity and selectivity.
