The Fundamental Group of Torus Knots

This work is concerned with the calculation of the fundamental group of torus knots. Torus knots are special types of knots which wind around a torus a number of times in the longitudinal and meridional directions. We compute and describe the fundamental group of torus knots by using some concepts in algebraic topology and group theory. We also calculate the fundamental group of an arbitrary knot by using an algorithm called the Wirtinger presentation.

Generating functions and topological complexity

We examine the rationality conjecture which states that (a) the formal power series $\sum_{r\ge 1} \tc_{r+1}(X)\cdot x^r$ represents a rational function of $x$ with a single pole of order 2 at $x=1$ and (b) the leading coefficient of the pole equals $\cat(X)$. Here $X$ is a finite CW-complex and for $r\ge 2$ the symbol $\tc_r(X)$ denotes its $r$-th sequential topological complexity. We analyse an example (violating the Ganea conjecture) and conclude that part (b) of the rationality conjecture is false in general. Besides, we establish a cohomological version of the rationality conjecture.

A classification of nullity classes in the derived category of a ring

For a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ with finite Krull dimension, we study the nullity classes in $D^c_{fg}(R)$, the full triangulated subcategory $D^c_{fg}(R)$ of the derived category $D(R)$ consisting of objects which can be represented by cofibrant objects with each degree finitely generated. In the light of perversity functions over the prime spectrum $\mathrm{Spec} R$, we prove that there is a complete invariant of nullity classes thus that of aisles (or equivalently, $t$-structures) in $D^c_{fg}(R)$.

Affine weakly regular tensor triangulated categories

We prove that the Balmer spectrum of a tensor triangulated category is homeomorphic to the Zariski spectrum of its graded central ring, provided the triangulated category is generated by its tensor unit and the graded central ring is noetherian and regular in a weak sense. There follows a classification of all thick subcategories, and the result extends to the compactly generated setting to yield a classification of all localizing subcategories as well as the analog of the telescope conjecture. This generalizes results of Shamir for commutative ring spectra.

Derived equivalences for hereditary Artin algebras

We study the role of the Serre functor in the theory of derived equivalences. Let $\mathcal{A}$ be an abelian category and let $(\mathcal{U}, \mathcal{V})$ be a $t$-structure on the bounded derived category $D^b \mathcal{A}$ with heart $\mathcal{H}$. We investigate when the natural embedding $\mathcal{H} \to D^b \mathcal{A}$ can be extended to a triangle equivalence $D^b \mathcal{H} \to D^b \mathcal{A}$. Our focus of study is the case where $\mathcal{A}$ is the category of finite-dimensional modules over a finite-dimensional hereditary algebra. In this case, we prove that such an extension exists if and only if the $t$-structure is bounded and the aisle $\mathcal{U}$ of the $t$-structure is closed under the Serre functor.

Rational models of the complement of a subpolyhedron in a manifold with boundary

Let W be a compact simply connected triangulated manifold with boundary and $K \subset W$ be a subpolyhedron. We construct an algebraic model of the rational homotopy type of the complement $W \setminus K$ out of a model of the map of pairs $(K, K \cap \partial W) \to (W,\partial W)$ under some high codimension hypothesis. We deduce the rational homotopy invariance of the configuration space of two points in a compact manifold with boundary under 2-connectedness hypotheses. Also, we exhibit nice explicits models of these configuration spaces for a large class of compact manifolds.

$t$-structures for hereditary categories

We study aisles in the derived category of a hereditary abelian category. Given an aisle, we associate a sequence of subcategories of the abelian category by considering the different homologies of the aisle. We then obtain a sequence, called a narrow sequence. We then prove that a narrow sequence in a hereditary abelian category consists of a nondecreasing sequence of wide subcategories, together with a tilting torsion class in each of these wide subcategories. Furthermore, there are relations these torsion classes have to satisfy. These results are sufficient to recover known classifications of t-structures for smooth projective curves, and for finitely generated modules over a Dedekind ring. In some special cases, including the case of finite dimensional modules over a finite dimensional hereditary algebra, we can reduce even further, effectively decoupling the different tilting torsion theories one chooses in the wide subcategories.

Implications of the Ganea Condition

Suppose the spaces X and X cross A have the same Lusternik-Schnirelmann category: cat(X cross A)= cat(X). Then there is a strict inequality cat(X cross (A halfsmash B)) < cat (X) + cat(A halfsmash B) for every space B, provided the connectivity of A is large enough (depending only on X). This is applied to give a partial verification of a conjecture of Iwase on the category of products of spaces with spheres.
