On $\bar{d}$-approachability, entropy density and $\mathscr{B}$-free shifts

We study approximation schemes for shift spaces over a finite alphabet using (pseudo)metrics connected to Ornstein's $\bar{d}$ metric. This leads to a class of shift spaces we call $\bar{d}$-approachable. A shift space $\bar{d}$-approachable when its canonical sequence of Markov approximations converges to it also in the $\bar{d}$ sense. We give a topological characterisation of chain mixing $\bar{d}$-approachable shift spaces. As an application we provide a new criterion for entropy density of ergodic measures. Entropy-density of a shift space means that every invariant measure $μ$ of such a shift space is the weak$^*$ limit of a sequence $μ_n$ of ergodic measures with the corresponding sequence of entropies $h(μ_n)$ converging to $h(μ)$. We prove ergodic measures are entropy-dense for every shift space that can be approximated in the $\bar{d}$ pseudometric by a sequence of transitive sofic shifts. This criterion can be applied to many examples that were out of the reach of previously known techniques including hereditary $\mathscr{B}$-free shifts and some minimal or proximal systems. The class of symbolic dynamical systems covered by our results includes also shift spaces where entropy density was established previously using the (almost) specification property.

Borel complexity of sets of normal numbers via generic points in subshifts with specification

We study the Borel complexity of sets of normal numbers in several numeration systems. Taking a dynamical point of view, we offer a unified treatment for continued fraction expansions and base $r$ expansions, and their various generalisations: generalised Lüroth series expansions and $β$-expansions. In fact, we consider subshifts over a countable alphabet generated by all possible expansions of numbers in $[0,1)$. Then normal numbers correspond to generic points of shift-invariant measures. It turns out that for these subshifts the set of generic points for a shift-invariant probability measure is precisely at the third level of the Borel hierarchy (it is a $Π^0_3$-complete set, meaning that it is a countable intersection of $F_σ$-sets, but it is not possible to write it as a countable union of $G_δ$-sets). We also solve a problem of Sharkovsky--Sivak on the Borel complexity of the basin of statistical attraction. The crucial dynamical feature we need is a feeble form of specification. All expansions named above generate subshifts with this property. Hence the sets of normal numbers under consideration are $Π^0_3$-complete.

On topological models of zero entropy loosely Bernoulli systems

We provide a purely topological characterisation of uniquely ergodic topological dynamical systems (TDSs) whose unique invariant measure is zero entropy loosely Bernoulli (following Ratner, we call such measures loosely Kronecker). At the heart of our proofs lies Feldman-Katok continuity (FK-continuity for short), that is, continuity with respect to the change of metric to the Feldman-Katok pseudometric. Feldman-Katok pseudometric is a topological analog of f-bar (edit) metric for symbolic systems. We also study an opposite of FK-continuity, coined FK-sensitivity. We obtain a version of Auslander-Yorke dichotomies: minimal TDSs are either FK-continuous or FK-sensitive, and transitive TDSs are either almost FK-continuous or FK-sensitive.

Arcwise connectedness of the set of ergodic measures of hereditary shifts

We show that the set of ergodic invariant measures of a shift space with a safe symbol (this includes all hereditary shifts) is arcwise connected when endowed with the $d$-bar metric. As a consequence the set of ergodic measures of such a shift is also arcwise connected in the weak-star topology and the entropy function over this set attains all values in the interval between zero and the topological entropy of the shift (inclusive). The latter result is motivated by a conjecture of A.~Katok.

Generic Points for Dynamical Systems with Average Shadowing

It is proved that to every invariant measure of a compact dynamical system one can associate a certain asymptotic pseudo orbit such that any point asymptotically tracing in average that pseudo orbit is generic for the measure. It follows that the asymptotic average shadowing property implies that every invariant measure has a generic point. The proof is based on the properties of the Besicovitch pseudometric DB which are of independent interest. It is proved among the other things that the set of generic points of ergodic measures is a closed set with respect to DB. It is also showed that the weak specification property implies the average asymptotic shadowing property thus the theory presented generalizes most known results on the existence of generic points for arbitrary invariant measures.

Multi-recurrence and van der Waerden systems

We explore recurrence properties arising from dynamical approach to combinatorial problems like the van der Waerden Theorem. We describe relations between these properties, study their consequences for dynamics, and demonstrate connections to combinatorial problems. In particular, we present a measure-theoretical analog of a result of Glasner on multi-transitivity in topological weakly mixing minimal maps. We also obtain a dynamical proof of the existence of a C-set with zero Banach density.

Mixing properties in coded systems

We show that topological mixing, weak mixing and total transitivity are equivalent for coded systems. We provide an example of a mixing coded system which cannot be approximated by any increasing sequence of mixing shifts of finite type, has only periodic points of even period and each set of its generators consists of blocks of even length. We prove that such an example cannot be a synchronized system. We also show that a mixing coded systems has the strong property $P$.

On density of ergodic measures and generic points

We provide conditions which guarantee that ergodic measures are dense in the simplex of invariant probability measures of a dynamical system given by a continuous map acting on a Polish space. Using them we study generic properties of invariant measures and prove that every invariant measure has a generic point. In the compact case, density of ergodic measures means that the simplex of invariant measures is either a singleton of a measure concentrated on a single periodic orbit or the Poulsen simplex. Our properties focus on the set of periodic points and we introduce two concepts: close\-ability with respect to a set of periodic points and linkability of a set of periodic points. Examples are provided to show that these are independent properties. They hold, for example, for systems having the periodic specification property. But they hold also for a much wider class of systems which contains, for example, irreducible Markov chains over a countable alphabet, all $β$-shifts, all $S$-gap shifts, ${C}^1$-generic diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold $M$, and certain geodesic flows of a complete connected negatively curved manifold.

Two results on entropy, chaos, and independence in symbolic dynamics

We survey the connections between entropy, chaos, and independence in topological dynamics. We present extensions of two classical results placing the following notions in the context of symbolic dynamics: 1. Equivalence of positive entropy and the existence of a large (in terms of asymptotic and Shnirelman densities) set of combinatorial independence for shift spaces. 2. Existence of a mixing shift space with a dense set of periodic points with topological entropy zero and without ergodic measure with full support, nor any distributionally chaotic pair. Our proofs are new and yield conclusions stronger than what was known before.

On entropy of dynamical systems with almost specification

We construct a family of shift spaces with almost specification and multiple measures of maximal entropy. This answers a question from Climenhaga and Thompson [Israel J. Math. 192 (2012), no. 2, 785--817]. Elaborating on our examples we also prove that some sufficient conditions for every subshift factor of a shift space to be intrinsically ergodic given by Climenhaga and Thompson are in some sense best possible, moreover, the weak specification property neither implies intrinsic ergodicity, nor follows from almost specification. We also construct a dynamical system with the weak specification property, which does not have the almost specification property. We prove that the minimal points are dense in the support of any invariant measure of a system with the almost specification property. Furthermore, if a system with almost specification has an invariant measure with non-trivial support, then it also has uniform positive entropy over the support of any invariant measure and can not be minimal.

On almost specification and average shadowing properties

In this paper we study relations between almost specification property, asymptotic average shadowing property and average shadowing property for dynamical systems on compact metric spaces. We show implications between these properties and relate them to other important notions such as shadowing, transitivity, invariant measures, etc. We provide examples that compactness is a necessary condition for these implications to hold. As a consequence of our methodology we also obtain a proof that limit shadowing in chain transitive systems implies shadowing.

Topological entropy and distributional chaos in hereditary shifts with applications to spacing shifts and beta shifts

Positive topological entropy and distributional chaos are characterized for hereditary shifts. A hereditary shift has positive topological entropy if and only if it is DC2-chaotic (or equivalently, DC3-chaotic) if and only if it is not uniquely ergodic. A hereditary shift is DC1-chaotic if and only if it is not proximal (has more than one minimal set). As every spacing shift and every beta shift is hereditary the results apply to those classes of shifts. Two open problems on topological entropy and distributional chaos of spacing shifts from an article of Banks et al. are solved thanks to this characterization. Moreover, it is shown that a spacing shift $Ω_P$ has positive topological entropy if and only if $\mathbb{N}\setminus P$ is a set of Poincaré recurrence. Using a result of Kř\'ıž an example of a proximal spacing shift with positive entropy is constructed. Connections between spacing shifts and difference sets are revealed and the methods of this paper are used to obtain new proofs of some results on difference sets.

Topological entropy of compact subsystems of transitive real line maps

For a continuous map $f$ from the real line (half-open interval $[0,1)$) into itself let ent(f) denote the supremum of topological entropies of $f|_K$, where $K$ runs over all compact $f$-invariant subsets of $\mathbb{R}$ ($[0,1)$, respectively). It is proved that if $f$ is topologically transitive, then the best lower bound of ent(f) is $\log\sqrt{3}$ ($\log 3$, respectively) and it is not attained. This solves a problem posed by C{á}novas [Dyn. Syst. \textbf{24} (2009), no. 4, 473--483].

On weak mixing, minimality and weak disjointness of all iterates

The article addresses some open questions about the relations between the topological weak mixing property and the transitivity of the map $f\times f^2 \times...\times f^m$, where $f\colon X\ra X$ is a topological dynamical system on a compact metric space. The theorem stating that a weakly mixing and strongly transitive system is $Δ$-transitive is extended to a non-invertible case with a simple proof. Two examples are constructed, answering the questions posed by Moothathu [Colloq. Math. 120 (2010), no. 1, 127--138]. The first one is a multi-transitive non weakly mixing system, and the second one is a weakly mixing non multi-transitive system. The examples are special spacing shifts. The later shows that the assumption of minimality in the Multiple Recurrence Theorem can not be replaced by weak mixing.
