Refined disk potentials for immersed Lagrangian surfaces

We define a refined Gromov-Witten disk potential of self-transverse monotone immersed Lagrangian surfaces in a symplectic 4-manifold as an element in a capped version of the Chekanov--Eliashberg dg-algebra of the singularity links of the double points (a collection of Legendrian Hopf links). We give a surgery formula that expresses the potential after smoothing a double point. We study refined potentials of monotone immersed Lagrangian spheres in the complex projective plane and find monotone spheres that cannot be displaced from complex lines and conics by symplectomorphisms. We also derive general restrictions on sphere potentials using Legendrian lifts to the contact 5-sphere.

Commuting symplectomorphisms and Dehn twists in divisors

Two commuting symplectomorphisms of a symplectic manifold give rise to actions on Floer cohomologies of each other. We prove the elliptic relation saying that the supertraces of these two actions are equal. In the case when a symplectomorphism $f$ commutes with a symplectic involution, the elliptic relation provides a lower bound on the dimension of $HF^*(f)$ in terms of the Lefschetz number of $f$ restricted to the fixed locus of the involution. We apply this bound to prove that Dehn twists around vanishing Lagrangian spheres inside most hypersurfaces in Grassmannians have infinite order in the symplectic mapping class group.

Good covers are algorithmically unrecognizable

A good cover in R^d is a collection of open contractible sets in R^d such that the intersection of any subcollection is either contractible or empty. Motivated by an analogy with convex sets, intersection patterns of good covers were studied intensively. Our main result is that intersection patterns of good covers are algorithmically unrecognizable. More precisely, the intersection pattern of a good cover can be stored in a simplicial complex called nerve which records which subfamilies of the good cover intersect. A simplicial complex is topologically d-representable if it is isomorphic to the nerve of a good cover in R^d. We prove that it is algorithmically undecidable whether a given simplicial complex is topologically d-representable for any fixed d \geq 5. The result remains also valid if we replace good covers with acyclic covers or with covers by open d-balls. As an auxiliary result we prove that if a simplicial complex is PL embeddable into R^d, then it is topologically d-representable. We also supply this result with showing that if a "sufficiently fine" subdivision of a k-dimensional complex is d-representable and k \leq (2d-3)/3, then the complex is PL embeddable into R^d.

Embedding 3-manifolds with boundary into closed 3-manifolds

We prove that there is an algorithm which determines whether or not a given 2-polyhedron can be embedded into some integral homology 3-sphere. This is a corollary of the following main result. Let $M$ be a compact connected orientable 3-manifold with boundary. Denote $G=\Z$, $G=\Z/p\Z$ or $G=\Q$. If $H_1(M;G)\cong G^k$ and $\bd M$ is a surface of genus $g$, then the minimal group $H_1(Q;G)$ for closed 3-manifolds $Q$ containing $M$ is isomorphic to $G^{k-g}$. Another corollary is that for a graph $L$ the minimal number $\rk H_1(Q;\Z)$ for closed orientable 3-manifolds $Q$ containing $L\times S^1$ is twice the orientable genus of the graph.

Singularities of integrable Hamiltonian systems: a criterion for non-degeneracy, with an application to the Manakov top

Let (M,ω) be a symplectic 2n-manifold and h_1,...,h_n be functionally independent commuting functions on M. We present a geometric criterion for a singular point P\in M (i.e. such that {dh_i(P)}_{i=1}^n are linearly dependent) to be non-degenerate in the sence of Vey-Eliasson. Then we apply Fomenko's theory to study the neighborhood U of the singular Liouville fiber containing saddle-saddle singularities of the Manakov top. Namely, we describe the singular Liouville foliation on U and the `Bohr-Sommerfeld' lattices on the momentum map image of U. A relation with the quantum Manakov top studied by Sinitsyn and Zhilinskii (SIGMA 3 2007, arXiv:math-ph/0703045) is discussed.
