Optical spin Hall effect pattern switching in polariton condensates in organic single-crystal microbelts

Topological polaritons, combining the robustness of the topological protected edge states to defects and disorder with the strong nonlinear properties of polariton bosons, represent an excellent platform to investigate novel photonic topological phases. In this work, we demonstrated the optical spin Hall effect (OSHE) and its symmetry switching in the exciton-polariton regime of pure DPAVBi crystals. Benefiting from the photonic Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in organic crystals, we observed the separation of left- and right-circularly-polarized polariton emission in two-dimensional momentum space and real space, a signature of the OSHE. Above the lasing threshold, the OSHE pattern changes due to transverse quantization in the microbelt. This device without superlattice structure has great potential applications in topological polaritonics, such as information transmission, photonic integrated chips and quantum information.

Control of dimer chain topology by Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling

We study theoretically a dimer chain in the presence of Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (RDSOC) with equal strength. We show that the RDSOC can be described as a synthetic gauge field that controls not only the magnitude but also the sign of tunneling coefficients between sites. This allows to emulate not only a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain which is commonly implemented in various platforms, but also, all energy spectra of the transverse field Ising model with both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic coupling. We simulate a realistic implementation of these effective Hamiltonians based on liquid crystal microcavities. In that case, the RDSOC can be switched on and off by an applied voltage, which controls the band topology, the existence and characteristics of topological edge states, or the nature of the ground state. This setting is promising for topological photonics applications and from a quantum simulation perspective.

Love might be a second-order phase transition

The hypothesis of the human brain operation in vicinity of a critical point has been a matter of a hot debate in the recent years. The evidence for a possibility of a naturally occurring phase transition across this critical point was missing so far. Here we show that love might be an example of such second-order phase transition. This hypothesis allows to describe both love at first sight and love from liking or friendship.

Parallel dark soliton pair in a bistable 2D exciton-polariton superfluid

Collective excitations, such as vortex-antivortex and dark solitons, are among the most fascinating effects of macroscopic quantum states. However, 2D dark solitons are unstable and collapse into vortices due to snake instabilities. Making use of the optical bistability in exciton-polariton microcavities, we demonstrate that a pair of dark solitons can be formed in the wake of an obstacle in a polariton flow resonantly supported by a homogeneous laser beam. Unlike the purely dissipative case where the solitons are grey and spatially separate, here the two solitons are fully dark, rapidly align at a specific separation distance and propagate parallel as long as the flow is in the bistable regime. Remarkably, the use of this regime allows to avoid the phase fixing arising in resonant pumping regime and to circumvent the polariton decay. Our work opens very wide perspectives of studying new classes of phase-density defects which can form in driven-dissipative quantum fluids of light.

Tuning the Berry curvature in 2D Perovskite

Topological physics and in particular its connection with artificial gauge fields is a forefront topic in different physical systems, ranging from cold atoms to photonics and more recently semiconductor dressed exciton-photon states, called polaritons. Engineering the energy dispersion of polaritons in microcavities through nanofabrication or exploiting the intrinsic material and cavity anisotropies has demonstrated many intriguing effects related to topology and emergent gauge fields. Here, we show that we can control the Berry curvature distribution of polariton bands in a strongly coupled organic-inorganic 2D perovskite single crystal. The spatial anisotropy of the perovskite crystal combined with photonic spin-orbit coupling make emerge two Hamilton's diabolical points in the dispersion. The application of an external magnetic field breaks time reversal symmetry thanks to the exciton Zeeman splitting. It splits the diabolical points degeneracy. The resulting bands show non-zero integral Berry curvature which we directly measure by state tomography. Crucially, we show that we can control the Berry curvature distribution in the band, the so-called band geometry, within the same microcavity.

Optically controlling the emission chirality of microlasers

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by helical light beams is an unbounded degree of freedom of photons that offers a promising playground in modern photonics. So far, integrated sources of coherent light carrying OAM are based on resonators whose design imposes a single, non-tailorable chirality of the wavefront (i.e. clockwise or counter clockwise vortices). Here, we propose and demonstrate the realization of an integrated microlaser where the chirality of the wavefront can be optically controlled. Importantly, the scheme that we use, based on an effective spin-orbit coupling of photons in a semiconductor microcavity, can be extended to different laser architectures, thus paving the way to the realization of a new generation of OAM microlasers with tunable chirality.

Spin-dependent Klein tunneling in polariton graphene with photonic spin-orbit interaction

We study Klein tunneling in polariton graphene. We show that the photonic spin-orbit coupling associated with the energy splitting between TE and TM photonic modes can be described as an emergent gauge field. It suppresses the Klein tunnelling in small energy range close to the Dirac points. Thanks to polariton spin-anisotropic interactions, polarized optical pumping allows to create potential barriers acting on a single polariton spin. We show that the resulting spin-dependent Klein tunneling can be used to create a perfectly transmitting polarization rotator operating at microscopic scale.

Direct observation of Dirac cones and a flatband in a honeycomb lattice for polaritons

Two-dimensional lattices of coupled micropillars etched in a planar semiconductor microcavity offer a workbench to engineer the band structure of polaritons. We report experimental studies of honeycomb lattices where the polariton low-energy dispersion is analogous to that of electrons in graphene. Using energy-resolved photoluminescence we directly observe Dirac cones, around which the dynamics of polaritons is described by the Dirac equation for massless particles. At higher energies, we observe p orbital bands, one of them with the nondispersive character of a flatband. The realization of this structure which holds massless, massive and infinitely massive particles opens the route towards studies of the interplay of dispersion, interactions, and frustration in a novel and controlled environment.

Realization of a double barrier resonant tunneling diode for cavity polaritons

We report on the realization of a double barrier resonant tunneling diode for cavity polaritons, by lateral patterning of a one-dimensional cavity. Sharp transmission resonances are demonstrated when sending a polariton flow onto the device. We use a non-resonant beam can be used as an optical gate and control the device transmission. Finally we evidence distortion of the transmission profile when going to the high density regime, signature of polariton-polariton interactions.

ZnO-Based Polariton Laser Operating at Room Temperature: From Excitonic to Photonic Condensate

A laser threshold is determined by the gain condition, which has been progressively reduced by the use of heterostructures and of quantum confinement. The polariton laser is the ultimate step of this evolution: coherent emission is obtained from the spontaneous decay of an exciton-polariton condensate, without the achievement of any gain condition. ZnO, with its unique excitonic properties, is the best choice for a blue/UV-emitting polariton laser device. We report on the fabrication of a new family of fully hybrid microcavities that combine the best-quality ZnO material available (bulk substrate) and two dielectric distributed Bragg reflectors, demonstrating large quality factors (>2500) and Rabi splittings (~200 meV). Low threshold polariton lasing is achieved between 4 and 300 K and for excitonic fractions ranging between 12% and 96 %. A phase diagram highlighting the role of LO phonon-assisted relaxation in this polar semiconductor is established, and a remarkable switching between polariton modes is demonstrated.

Backscattering suppression in supersonic 1D polariton condensates

We investigate the effects of disorder on the propagation of one-dimensional polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavities. We observe a strong suppression of the backscattering produced by the imperfections of the structure when increasing the condensate density. This suppression occurs in the supersonic regime and is simultaneous to the onset of parametric instabilities which enable the "hopping" of the condensate through the disorder. Our results evidence a new mechanism for the frictionless flow of polaritons at high speeds.

Bloch Oscillations of an Exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein Condensate

We study theoretically Bloch oscillations of half-matter, half-light quasi-particles: exciton-polaritons. We propose an original structure for the observation of this phenomenon despite the constraints imposed by the relatively short lifetime of the particles and the limitations on the engineered periodic potential. First, we focus on the linear regime in a perfect lattice where regular oscillations are obtained. Second, we take into account a realistic structural disorder known to localize non-interacting particles, which is quite dramatic for propagation-related phenomena. In the non-linear condensed regime the renormalization of the energy provided by interactions between particles allows us to screen efficiently the disorder and to recover oscillations. This effect is useful only in a precise range of parameters outside of which the system becomes dynamically unstable. For a large chemical potential of the order of the potential's amplitude, a strong Landau-Zener tunneling tends to completely delocalize particles.

Bloch-oscillations of exciton-polaritons and photons for the generation of an alternating terahertz spin current

We analyze theoretically the spin dynamics of exciton-polaritons and photons during their Bloch oscillations in a one-dimensional microwire. The wire geometry induces an energy splitting between the longitudinal and transverse electric polarized eigenmodes. We show analytically that a synchronized regime between the Bloch oscillations in space and the precession of the pseudospin can be achieved. This synchronization results in the formation of a THz alternating spin current which can be extracted out of the confinement region by the Landau-Zener tunneling towards the second allowed miniband. Finally we show how the spin signal can be maintained despite of the lifetime of the particles for the case of exciton-polaritons both in a resonant and non resonant pumping schemes. The structure therefore acts as a Spin-optronic device able to convert the polarization and emit spin polarized pulses.

Reply to "Comment on 'Topological stability of the half-vortices in spinor exciton-polariton condensates'"

In a recent work [H. Flayac, I.A. Shelykh, D.D. Solnyshkov and G. Malpuech, Phys. Rev. B 81, 045318 (2010)], we have analyzed the effect of the TE-TM splitting on the stability of the exciton-polariton vortex states. We considered classical vortex solutions having cylindrical symmetry and we found that the so-called half-vortex states [Yu. G. Rubo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 106401 (2007)] are not solutions of the stationary Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In their Comment [M. Toledo Solano, Yu.G. Rubo, Phys. Rev. B 82, 127301 (2010)], M. Toledo Solano and Yuri G. Rubo claim that this conclusion is misleading and pretend to demonstrate the existence of static half-vortices in an exciton-polariton condensate in the presence of TE-TM splitting. In this reply we explain why this assertion is not demonstrated satisfactorily.

Effect of TE-TM Splitting on the topological stability of half-vortices in exciton-polariton condensates

Half-vortices have been recently shown to be the elementary topological defects supported by a spinor cavity exciton-polaritons condensates with spin anisotropic interactions (Y. G. Rubo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 106401 (2007)). A half vortex is composed by an integer vortex for one circular component of the condensate, whereas the other component remain static. We analyze theoretically the effect of the splitting between TE and TM polarized eigen modes on the structure of the vortices in this system. For TE and TM modes, the polarization states depend on the direction of propagations of particles and imposes some well defined phase relation between the two circular component. As a result elementary topogical defects in this system are no more half vortices but integer vortices correspond to an integer vortex for both circular components of the condensate. The intrinsic life time of half vortices is given and the texture of a few vortex states is analyzed.
