Efficient radiational outcoupling of electromagnetic energy from hyperbolic metamaterial resonators

Hyperbolic metamaterials were initially proposed in optics to boost radiation efficiencies of quantum emitters. Adopting this concept for antenna design can allow approaching long-standing challenges in radio physics. For example, impedance matching and gain are among the most challenging antenna parameters to achieve in case when a broadband operation is needed. Here we pro-pose and numerically analyse a new compact antenna design, based on hyperbolic metamaterial slab with a patterned layer on top. Energy from a subwavelength loop antenna is shown to be efficiently harvested into bulk modes of the metamaterial over a broad frequency range. Highly localized propagating waves within the medium have a well-resolved spatial-temporal separation owing to the hyperbolic type of effective permeability tensor. This strong interplay between chromatic and modal dispersions enables routing different frequencies into different spatial locations within compact subwavelength geometry. An array of non-overlapping resonant elements is placed on the metamaterial layer and provides a superior matching of localized electromagnetic energy to the free space radiation. As the result, two-order of magnitude improvement in linear gain of the device is predicted. The proposed new architecture can find a use in applications, where multiband or broadband compact devices are required.

Asymmetric Backscattering from the Hybrid Magneto-Electric Meta Particle

The optical theorem relates the total scattering cross-section of a given structure with its forward scattering, but does not impose any restrictions on other directions. Strong backward-forward asymmetry in scattering could be achieved by exploring retarded coupling between particles, exhibiting both electric and magnetic resonances. Here, a hybrid magneto-electric particle (HMEP), consisting of a split ring resonator acting as a magnetic dipole and a wire antenna acting as an electric dipole, is shown to possess asymmetric scattering properties. When illuminated from opposite directions with the same polarization of the electric field, the structure has exactly the same forward scattering, while the backward scattering is drastically different. The scattering cross section is shown to be as low as zero at a narrow frequency range when illuminated from one side, while being maximal at the same frequency range when illuminated from the other side. Theoretical predictions of the phenomena are supported with both numerical and experimental conformations, obtained at the GHz frequency range, and all are in a good agreement with each other. HMEP meta-particles could be used as building blocks for various metamaterials assembling solar cells, invisibility cloaks, holographic masks and more.

Resonant Meta-atoms with Nonlinearities on Demand

Nonlinear light-matter interactions and their applications are constrained by properties of available materials. The use of metamaterials opens the way to achieve precise control over electromagnetic properties at a microscopic level, providing new tools for experimental studies of complex nonlinear phenomena in photonics. Here a doubly resonant nonlinear meta-atom is proposed, analyzed and characterized in the GHz spectral range. The underlying structure is composed of a pair of split rings, resonant at both fundamental and nonlinear frequencies. The rings share a varactor diode, which serves as a microscopic source of nonlinearity. Flexible control over the coupling and near- and far-field patterns are reported, favoring the doubly resonant structure over other realizations. Relative efficiencies of the second and third harmonics, generated by the diode, are tailored by dint of the double-ring geometry, providing a guideline for selecting one frequency against another, using the design of the auxiliary structures. The on-demand control over the microscopic nonlinear properties enables developing a toolbox for experimental emulation of complex nonlinear phenomena.

Superdirective dielectric nanoantennas with effect of light steering

We introduce a novel concept of superdirective antennas based on the generation of higher-order optically-induced magnetic multipole modes. All-dielectric nanoantenna can be realized as an optically small spherical dielectric nanoparticle with a notch excited by a point source (e.g. a quantum dot) located in the notch. The superdirectivity effect is not associated with high dissipative losses. For these dielectric nanoantennas we predict the effect of the beam steering at the nanoscale characterized by a subwavelength sensitivity of the beam radiation direction to the source position. We confirm the predicted effects experimentally through the scaling to the microwave frequency range.
