Tracer turbulence: the Batchelor-Howells-Townsend spectrum revisited

Given a velocity field $u(x,t)$, we consider the evolution of a passive tracer $θ$ governed by $\partial_tθ+ u\cdot\nablaθ= Δθ+ g$ with time-independent source $g(x)$. When $\|u\|$ is small, Batchelor, Howells and Townsend (1959, J.\ Fluid Mech.\ 5:134) predicted that the tracer spectrum scales as $|θ_k|^2\propto|k|^{-4}|u_k|^2$. In this paper, we prove that this scaling does indeed hold for large $|k|$, in a probabilistic sense, for random synthetic two-dimensional incompressible velocity fields $u(x,t)$ with given energy spectra. We also propose an asymptotic correction factor to the BHT scaling arising from the time-dependence of $u$.

Energy spectra and passive tracer cascades in turbulent flows

We study the influence of the energy spectrum on the extent of the cascade range of a passive tracer in turbulent flows. The interesting cases are when there are two different spectra over the potential range of the tracer cascade (in 2D when the tracer forcing is in the inverse energy cascade range, and in 3D when the Schmidt number Sc is large). The extent of the tracer cascade range is then limited by the width of the range for the shallower of the two energy spectra. Nevertheless, we show that in dimension $d=2,3$ the tracer cascade range extends (up to a logarithm) to $κ_{d\text{D}}^{p}$, where $κ_{d\text{D}}$ is the wavenumber beyond which diffusion should dominate and $p$ is arbitrarily close to 1, provided Sc is larger than a certain power (depending on $p$) of the Grashof number. We also derive estimates which suggest that in 2D, for Sc${}\sim1$ a wide tracer cascade can coexist with a significant inverse energy cascade at Grashof numbers large enough to produce a turbulent flow.

Long-time dynamics of 2d double-diffusive convection: analysis and/of numerics

We consider a two-dimensional model of double-diffusive convection and its time discretisation using a second-order scheme which treat the nonlinear term explicitly (backward differentiation formula with a one-leg method). Uniform bounds on the solutions of both the continuous and discrete models are derived (under a timestep restriction for the discrete model), proving the existence of attractors and invariant measures supported on them. As a consequence, the convergence of the attractors and long time statistical properties of the discrete model to those of the continuous one in the limit of vanishing timestep can be obtained following established methods.

Timestepping schemes for the 3d Navier-Stokes equations: small solutions and short times

It is well known that the solution of the 3d Navier--Stokes equations remains bounded if the initial data and the forcing are sufficiently small relative to the viscosity, and for a finite time given any bounded initial data. In this article, we consider two temporal discretisations (semi-implicit and fully implicit) of the 3d Navier--Stokes equations in a periodic domain and prove that their solutions remain bounded in $H^1$ subject to essentially the same smallness conditions (on initial data, forcing or time) as the continuous system and to suitable timestep restrictions.

Navier-Stokes equations on a rapidly rotating sphere

We extend our earlier β-plane results [al-Jaboori and Wirosoetisno, 2011, DCDS-B 16:687--701] to a rotating sphere. Specifically, we show that the solution of the Navier--Stokes equations on a sphere rotating with angular velocity 1/ε becomes zonal in the long time limit, in the sense that the non-zonal component of the energy becomes bounded by εM. We also show that the global attractor reduces to a single stable steady state when the rotation is fast enough.

Long time stability of a classical efficient scheme for two dimensional Navier-Stokes equations

We prove that a popular classical implicit-explicit scheme for the 2D incompressible Navier--Stokes equations that treats the viscous term implicitly while the nonlinear advection term explicitly is long time stable provided that the time step is sufficiently small in the case with periodic boundary conditions. The long time stability in the $L^2$ and $H^1$ norms further leads to the convergence of the global attractors and invariant measures of the scheme to those of the NSE itself at vanishing time step. Both semi-discrete in time and fully discrete schemes with either Galerkin Fourier spectral or collocation Fourier spectral methods are considered.

Navier-Stokes equations on the $β$-plane

We show that, given a sufficiently regular forcing, the solution of the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations on the periodic $β$-plane (i.e.\ with the Coriolis force varying as $f_0+βy$) will become nearly zonal: with the vorticity $ω(x,y,t)=\wb(y,t)+\wt(x,y,t)$, one has $|\wt|_{H^s}^2\leβ^{-1} M_s(\...)$ as $t\to\infty$. We use this show that, for sufficiently large $β$, the global attractor of this system reduces to a point.
