Polar degree of hypersurfaces with 1-dimensional singularities

We prove a formula for the polar degree of projective hypersurfaces in terms of the Milnor data of the singularities, extending to 1-dimensional singularities the Dimca-Papadima result for isolated singularities. We discuss the semi-continuity of the polar degree in deformations, and we classify the homaloidal cubic surfaces with 1-dimensional singular locus. Some open questions are pointed out along the way.

Equilibria of point charges on convex curves

We study the equilibrium positions of three points on a convex curve under influence of the Coulomb potential. We identify these positions as orthotripods, three points on the curve having concurrent normals. This relates the equilibrium positions to the caustic (evolute) of the curve. The concurrent normals can only meet in the core of the caustic, which is contained in the interior of the caustic. Moreover, we give a geometric condition for three points in equilibrium with positive charges only. For the ellipse we show that the space of orthotripods is homeomorphic to a 2-dimensional bounded cylinder.

Power diagrams and Morse Theory

We study Morse theory of the (power) distance function to a set of points in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We describe the topology of the union of the corresponding set of growing balls by a Morse poset. The Morse poset is related to the power tesselation of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We remark that the power diagrams from computer science are the spines of amoebas in algebraic geometry, or the hypersurfaces in tropical geometry. We show that there exists a discrete Morse function on the coherent triangulation, dual to the power diagram, such that its critical set equals the Morse poset of the power diagram.

Betti Bounds of Polynomials

We initiate a classification of complex polynomials f of degree d having the top Betti number of the general fibre close to the maximum. We find a range in which the polynomial must have isolated singularities and another range where it may have at most a line singularity of Morse transversal type, besides controlled singularities at infinity. Our method uses deformations into particular pencils with non-isolated singularities.
