Lower bounds for Ramsey numbers as a statistical physics problem

Ramsey's theorem, concerning the guarantee of certain monochromatic patterns in large enough edge-coloured complete graphs, is a fundamental result in combinatorial mathematics. In this work, we highlight the connection between this abstract setting and a statistical physics problem. Specifically, we design a classical Hamiltonian that favours configurations in a way to establish lower bounds on Ramsey numbers. As a proof of principle we then use Monte Carlo methods to obtain such lower bounds, finding rough agreement with known literature values in a few cases we investigated. We discuss numerical limitations of our approach and indicate a path towards the treatment of larger graph sizes.

Phase diagram of an extended parafermion chain

We study the phase diagram of an extended parafermion chain, which, in addition to terms coupling parafermions on neighbouring sites, also possesses terms involving four sites. Via a Fradkin--Kadanoff transformation the parafermion chain is shown to be equivalent to the non-chiral $\mathbb{Z}_3$ axial next-nearest neighbour Potts model. We discuss a possible experimental realisation using hetero-nanostructures. The phase diagram contains several gapped phases, including a topological phase where the system possesses three (nearly) degenerate ground states, and a gapless Luttinger-liquid phase.

Energy transport between critical one-dimensional systems with different central charges

Energy transport can reveal information about interacting many-body systems beyond other transport probes. In particular, in one dimension it has been shown that the energy current is directly proportional to the central charge, thus revealing information about the degrees of freedom of critical systems. In this work, we explicitly verify this result in two cases for translationally invariant systems based on explicit microscopic calculations. More importantly, we generalise the result to non-translation invariant setups and use this to study a composite system of two subsystems possessing different central charges. We find a bottleneck effect meaning the smaller central charge limits the energy transport.

Time evolution during and after finite-time quantum quenches in Luttinger liquids

We consider finite-time quantum quenches in the interacting Tomonaga--Luttinger model, for example time-dependent changes of the nearest-neighbour interactions for spinless fermions. We use the exact solutions for specific protocols including the linear and cosine ramps (or, more generally, periodic pumping). We study the dynamics of the total and kinetic energy as well as the Green functions during as well as after the quench. For the latter we find that the light-cone picture remains applicable, however, the propagating front is delayed as compared to the sudden quench. We extract the universal behaviour of the Green functions and in particular provide analytic, non-perturbative results for the delay applicable to quenches of short to moderate duration but arbitrary time dependency.

Time evolution during and after finite-time quantum quenches in the transverse-field Ising chain

We study the time evolution in the transverse-field Ising chain subject to quantum quenches of finite duration, ie, a continuous change in the transverse magnetic field over a finite time. Specifically, we consider the dynamics of the total energy, one- and two-point correlation functions and Loschmidt echo during and after the quench as well as their stationary behaviour at late times. We investigate how different quench protocols affect the dynamics and identify universal properties of the relaxation.

Charge fluctuations in nonlinear heat transport

We show that charge fluctuation processes are crucial for the nonlinear heat conductance through an interacting nanostructure, even far from a resonance. We illustrate this for an Anderson quantum dot accounting for the first two leading orders of the tunneling in a master equation. The often made assumption that off-resonant transport proceeds entirely by virtual occupation of charge states, underlying exchange-scattering models, can fail dramatically for heat transport. The identified energy-transport resonances in the Coulomb blockade regime provide new qualitative information about relaxation processes, for instance by strong negative differential heat conductance relative to the heat current. These can go unnoticed in the charge current, making nonlinear heat-transport spectroscopy with energy-level control a promising experimental tool.

Exact ground states and topological order in interacting Kitaev/Majorana chains

We study a system of interacting spinless fermions in one dimension which, in the absence of interactions, reduces to the Kitaev chain [A. Yu Kitaev, Phys.-Usp. \textbf{44}, 131 (2001)]. In the non-interacting case, a signal of topological order appears as zero-energy modes localized near the edges. We show that the exact ground states can be obtained analytically even in the presence of nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions when the on-site (chemical) potential is tuned to a particular function of the other parameters. As with the non-interacting case, the obtained ground states are two-fold degenerate and differ in fermionic parity. We prove the uniqueness of the obtained ground states and show that they can be continuously deformed to the ground states of the non-interacting Kitaev chain without gap closing. We also demonstrate explicitly that there exists a set of operators each of which maps one of the ground states to the other with opposite fermionic parity. These operators can be thought of as an interacting generalization of Majorana edge zero modes.

Strongly interacting Majorana modes in an array of Josephson junctions

An array of superconducting islands with semiconducting nanowires in the right regime provides a macroscopic implementation of Kitaev's toy model for Majorana wires. We show that a capacitive coupling between adjacent islands leads to an effective interaction between the Majorana modes. We demonstrate that even though strong repulsive interaction eventually drive the system into a Mott insulating state the competition between the (trivial) band-insulator and the (trivial) Mott insulator leads to an interjacent topological insulating state for arbitrary strong interactions.

Low-energy properties of fractional helical Luttinger liquids

We investigate the low-energy properties of (quasi) helical and fractional helical Luttinger liquids. In particular, we calculate the Drude peak of the optical conductivity, the density of states, as well as charge transport properties of the interacting system with and without attached Fermi liquid leads at small and large (compared to the gap) frequencies. For fractional wires, we find that the low energy tunneling density of states vanishes. The conductance of a fractional helical Luttinger liquid is non-integer. It is independent of the Luttinger parameters in the wire, despite the intricate mixing of charge and spin degrees of freedom, and only depends on the relative locking of charge and spin degrees of freedom.

Quantum quench in the sine-Gordon model

We consider the time evolution in the repulsive sine-Gordon quantum field theory after the system is prepared in a particular class of initial states. We focus on the time dependence of the one-point function of the semi-local operator $\exp\big(i\ β\ Φ(x)/2\big)$. By using two different methods based on form-factor expansions, we show that this expectation value decays to zero exponentially, and we determine the decay rate by analytical means. Our methods generalise to other correlation functions and integrable models.

Supersymmetry in the Majorana Cooper-Pair Box

Over the years, supersymmetric quantum mechanics has evolved from a toy model of high energy physics to a field of its own. Although various examples of supersymmetric quantum mechanics have been found, systems that have a natural realization are scarce. Here, we show that the extension of the conventional Cooper-pair box by a 4pi-periodic Majorana-Josephson coupling realizes supersymmetry for certain values of the ratio between the conventional Josephson and the Majorana- Josephson coupling strength. The supersymmetry we find is a "hidden" minimally bosonized supersymmetry that provides a non-trivial generalization of the supersymmetry of the free particle and relies crucially on the presence of an anomalous Josephson junction in the system. We show that the resulting degeneracy of the energy levels can be probed directly in a tunneling experiment and discuss the various transport signatures. An observation of the predicted level degeneracy would provide clear evidence for the presence of the anomalous Josephson coupling.

Transport properties of fully screened Kondo models

We study the non-equilibrium transport properties of fully (exactly) screened Kondo quantum dots subject to a finite bias voltage or a finite temperature. Firstly, we calculate the Fermi-liquid coefficients of the conductance for models with arbitrary spin, i.e. its leading behaviour for small bias voltages or temperatures. Secondly, we determine the low-temperature behaviour of the static susceptibility from the exactly known Bethe Ansatz results for the magnetisation. Thirdly, we study the crossover from strong to weak coupling in the spin-1/2 and the spin-1 models coupled to one or two screening channels respectively. Using a real-time renormalisation group method we calculate the static and dynamical spin-spin correlation functions for the spin-1/2 model as well as the linear and differential conductance and the static susceptibility for the spin-1 model. We define various Kondo scales and discuss their relations. We assess the validity of the renormalisation-group treatment by comparing with known results for the temperature dependence of the linear conductance and static susceptibility as well as the Fermi-liquid behaviour at low energies.

Integrability-based analysis of the hyperfine-interaction -nduced decoherence in quantum dots

Using the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz in conjunction with a simple Monte Carlo sampling technique, we study the problem of the decoherence of a central spin coupled to a nuclear spin bath. We describe in detail the full crossover from strong to weak external magnetic field field, a limit where a large non-decaying coherence factor is found. This feature is explained by Bose-Einstein-condensate-like physics which also allows us to argue that the corresponding zero frequency peak would not be broadened by statistical or ensemble averaging.

Spin decoherence due to a randomly fluctuating spin bath

We study the decoherence of a spin in a quantum dot due to its hyperfine coupling to a randomly fluctuating bath of nuclear spins. The system is modelled by the central spin model with the spin bath initially being at infinite temperature. We calculate the spectrum and time evolution of the coherence factor using a Monte Carlo sampling of the exact eigenstates obtained via the algebraic Bethe ansatz. The exactness of the obtained eigenstates allows us to study the non-perturbative regime of weak magnetic fields in a full quantum mechanical treatment. In particular, we find a large non-decaying fraction in the zero-field limit. The crossover from strong to weak fields is similar to the decoherence starting from a pure initial bath state treated previously. We compare our results to a simple semiclassical picture [Merkulov et al., Phys. Rev. B 65, 205309 (2002)] and find surprisingly good agreement. Finally, we discuss the effect of weakly coupled spins and show that they will eventually lead to complete decoherence.

Critical scales in anisotropic spin systems from functional renormalization

We apply a recently developed functional renormalization group (fRG) scheme for quantum spin systems to the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ model on a two-dimensional square lattice. Based on an auxiliary fermion representation we derive flow equations which allow a resummation of the perturbation series in the spin-spin interactions. Spin susceptibilities are calculated for different values of the anisotropy parameter. The phase transition between planar and axial ordering at the isotropic point is reproduced correctly. The results for the critical scales from the fRG as quantitative measures for the ordering temperatures are in good agreement with the exact solution in the Ising limit. On the easy-plane side, the deviations from critical temperatures obtained with quantum Monte Carlo are larger but still acceptable. However, at the isotropic point the Mermin-Wagner theorem is violated such that a precise description of the behavior in the vicinity of the phase transition is not possible. We discuss possible reasons for these discrepanies.

Dynamics in the Ising field theory after a quantum quench

We study the real-time dynamics of the order parameter $<σ(t)>$ in the Ising field theory after a quench in the fermion mass, which corresponds to a quench in the transverse field of the corresponding transverse field Ising chain. We focus on quenches within the ordered phase. The long-time behaviour is obtained analytically by a resummation of the leading divergent terms in a form-factor expansion for $<σ(t)>$. Our main result is the development of a method for treating divergences associated with working directly in the field theory limit. We recover the scaling limit of the corresponding result by Calabrese et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{106}, 227203 (2011)], which was obtained for the lattice model. Our formalism generalizes to integrable quantum quenches in other integrable models.

Kondo effect on the surface of 3D topological insulators: Signatures in scanning tunneling spectroscopy

We investigate the scattering off dilute magnetic impurities placed on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators. In the low-temperature limit, the impurity moments are Kondo-screened by the surface-state electrons, despite their exotic locking of spin and momentum. We determine signatures of the Kondo effect appearing in quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns as recorded by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, taking into account the full energy dependence of the T matrix as well as the hexagonal warping of the surface Dirac cones. We identify a universal energy dependence of the QPI signal at low scanning energies as the fingerprint of Kondo physics, markedly different from the signal due to non-magnetic or static magnetic impurities. Finally, we discuss our results in the context of recent experimental data.

Local density of states of a quarter-filled one-dimensional Mott insulator with a boundary

We study the low-energy limit of a quarter-filled one-dimensional Mott insulator. We analytically determine the local density of states in the presence of a strong impurity potential, which is modeled by a boundary. To this end we calculate the Green function using field theoretical methods. The Fourier transform of the local density of states shows signatures of a pinning of the spin-density wave at the impurity as well as several dispersing features at frequencies above the charge gap. These features can be interpreted as propagating spin and charge degrees of freedom. Their relative strength can be attributed to the "quasi-fermionic" behavior of charge excitations with equal momenta. Furthermore, we discuss the effect of bound states localized at the impurity. Finally, we give an overview of the local density of states in various one-dimensional systems and discuss implications for scanning tunneling microscopy experiments.

On the determinant representations of Gaudin models' scalar products and form factors

We propose alternative determinant representations of certain form factors and scalar products of states in rational Gaudin models realized in terms of compact spins. We use alternative pseudo-vacuums to write overlaps in terms of partition functions with domain wall boundary conditions. Contrarily to Slavnovs determinant formulas, this construction does not require that any of the involved states be solutions to the Bethe equations; a fact that could prove useful in certain non-equilibrium problems. Moreover, by using an atypical determinant representation of the partition functions, we propose expressions for the local spin raising and lowering operators form factors which only depend on the eigenvalues of the conserved charges. These eigenvalues define eigenstates via solutions of a system of quadratic equations instead of the usual Bethe equations. Consequently, the current work allows important simplifications to numerical procedures addressing decoherence in Gaudin models.

Renormalization-group analysis of a spin-1 Kondo dot: Non-equilibrium transport and relaxation dynamics

We study non-equilibrium transport through a spin-1 Kondo dot in a local magnetic field. To this end we perform a two-loop renormalization group analysis in the weak-coupling regime yielding analytic results for (i) the renormalized magnetic field and the g-factor, (ii) the time evolution of observables and the relevant decay rates, (iii) the magnetization and anisotropy as well as (iv) the current and differential conductance in the stationary state. In particular, we find that compared to a spin-1/2 Kondo dot there exist three additional decay rates resulting in an enhanced broadening of the logarithmic features observed in stationary quantities. Additionally, we study the effect of anisotropic couplings between reservoir and impurity spin.

Spectral properties of one-dimensional spiral spin density wave states

We provide a full characterization of the spectral properties of spiral spin density wave (SSDW) states which emerge in one-dimensional electron systems coupled to localized magnetic moments or quantum wires with spin-orbit interactions. We derive analytic results for the spectral function, local density of states and optical conductivity in the low-energy limit by using field theory techniques. We identify various collective modes and show that the spectrum strongly depends on the interaction strength between the electrons. The results provide characteristic signatures for an experimental detection of SSDW states.

Transport properties of a multichannel Kondo dot in a magnetic field

We study the nonequilibrium transport through a multichannel Kondo quantum dot in the presence of a magnetic field. We use the exact solution of the two-loop renormalization group equation to derive analytical results for the g factor, the spin relaxation rates, the magnetization, and the differential conductance. We show that the finite magnetization leads to a coupling between the conduction channels which manifests itself in additional features in the differential conductance.

Boundary effects on the local density of states of one-dimensional Mott insulators and charge density wave states

We determine the local density of states (LDOS) for spin-gapped one-dimensional charge density wave (CDW) states and Mott insulators in the presence of a hard-wall boundary. We calculate the boundary contribution to the single-particle Green function in the low-energy limit using field theory techniques and analyze it in terms of its Fourier transform in both time and space. The boundary LDOS in the CDW case exhibits a singularity at momentum 2kF, which is indicative of the pinning of the CDW order at the impurity. We further observe several dispersing features at frequencies above the spin gap, which provide a characteristic signature of spin-charge separation. This demonstrates that the boundary LDOS can be used to infer properties of the underlying bulk system. In presence of a boundary magnetic field mid-gap states localized at the boundary emerge. We investigate the signature of such bound states in the LDOS. We discuss implications of our results on STM experiments on quasi-1D systems such as two-leg ladder materials like Sr14Cu24O41. By exchanging the roles of charge and spin sectors, all our results directly carry over to the case of one-dimensional Mott insulators.

Non-equilibrium transport through quantum dots with Dzyaloshinsky--Moriya--Kondo interaction

We study non-equilibrium transport through a single-orbital Anderson model in a magnetic field with spin-dependent hopping amplitudes. In the cotunneling regime it is described by an effective spin-1/2 dot with a Dzyaloshinsky--Moriya--Kondo (DMK) interaction between the spin on the dot and the electron spins in the leads. Using a real-time renormalization group technique we show that at low temperatures (i) the DMK interaction is strongly renormalized, (ii) the renormalized magnetic field acquires a linear voltage dependence, and (iii) the differential conductance exhibits a voltage asymmetry which is strongly enhanced by logarithmic corrections. We propose transport measurements in which these signatures can be observed.

Relaxation vs decoherence: Spin and current dynamics in the anisotropic Kondo model at finite bias and magnetic field

Using a nonequilibrium renormalization group method we study the real-time evolution of spin and current in the anisotropic Kondo model (both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic) at finite magnetic field $h_0$ and bias voltage $V$. We derive analytic expressions for all times in the weak-coupling regime $\max\{V,h_0,1/t\}\gg T_c$ ($T_c=$ strong coupling scale). We find that all observables decay both with the spin relaxation and decoherence rates $Γ_{1/2}$. Various $V$-dependent logarithmic, oscillatory, and power-law contributions are predicted. The low-energy cutoff of logarithmic terms is generically identified by the difference of transport decay rates. For small times $t\ll \max\{V,h_0\}^{-1}$, we obtain universal dynamics for spin and current.

Dynamical spin-spin correlation functions in the Kondo model out of equilibrium

We calculate the dynamical spin-spin correlation functions of a Kondo dot coupled to two noninteracting leads held at different chemical potentials. To this end we generalize a recently developed real-time renormalization group method in frequency space (RTRG-FS) to allow the calculation of dynamical correlation functions of arbitrary dot operators in systems describing spin and/or orbital fluctuations. The resulting two-loop RG equations are analytically solved in the weak-coupling regime. This implies that the method can be applied provided either the voltage $V$ through the dot or the external magnetic field $h_0$ are sufficiently large, $\max\{V,h_0\}\gg T_K$, where the Kondo temperature $T_K$ is the scale where the system enters the strong-coupling regime. Explicitly, we calculate the longitudinal and transverse spin-spin correlation and response functions as well as the resulting fluctuation-dissipation ratios. The correlation functions in real-frequency space can be calculated in Matsubara space without the need of any analytical continuation. We obtain analytic results for the line-shape, the small- and large-frequency limits and several other features like the height and width of the peak in the transverse susceptibility at $Ω\approx\tilde{h}$, where $\tilde{h}$ denotes the reduced magnetic field. Furthermore, we discuss how the developed method can be generalized to calculate dynamical correlation functions of other operators involving reservoir degrees of freedom as well.

Spontaneous Parity Violation in a Quantum Spin Chain

We report on a spontaneous breakdown of parity in the ground state of a spin Hamiltonian involving nearest-neighbor interactions. This occurs for a one-dimensional model where spins transform under the gauge field representation of QCD, the eight-dimensional adjoint representation of SU(3). The ground state spontaneously violates parity and is two-fold degenerate. In addition, the model possesses a non-vanishing topological string order parameter which we explicate analytically.
