$L^α$-Regularization of the Beckmann Problem

We investigate the problem of optimal transport in the so-called Beckmann form, i.e. given two Radon measures on a compact set, we seek an optimal flow field which is a vector valued Radon measure on the same set that describes a flow between these two measures and minimizes a certain linear cost function. We consider $L^α$ regularization of the problem, which guarantees uniqueness and forces the solution to be an integrable function rather than a Radon measure. This regularization naturally gives rise to a semi-smooth Newton scheme that can be used to solve the problem numerically. Besides motivating and developing the numerical scheme, we also include approximation results for vanishing regularization in the continuous setting.

Regularization of Inverse Problems by Filtered Diagonal Frame Decomposition

The characteristic feature of inverse problems is their instability with respect to data perturbations. In order to stabilize the inversion process, regularization methods have to be developed and applied. In this work we introduce and analyze the concept of filtered diagonal frame decomposition which extends the standard filtered singular value decomposition to the frame case. Frames as generalized singular system allows to better adapt to a given class of potential solutions. In this paper, we show that filtered diagonal frame decomposition yield a convergent regularization method. Moreover, we derive convergence rates under source type conditions and prove order optimality under the assumption that the considered frame is a Riesz-basis.

Orlicz space regularization of continuous optimal transport problems

In this work we analyze regularized optimal transport problems in the so-called Kantorovich form, i.e. given two Radon measures on two compact sets, the aim is to find a transport plan, which is another Radon measure on the product of the sets, that has these two measures as marginals and minimizes the sum of a certain linear cost function and a regularization term. We focus on regularization terms where a Young's function applied to the (density of the) transport plan is integrated against a product measure. This forces the transport plan to belong to a certain Orlicz space. The predual problem is derived and proofs for strong duality and existence of primal solutions of the regularized problem are presented. Existence of (pre-)dual solutions is shown for the special case of $L^p$ regularization for $p\geq 2$. Moreover, two results regarding $Γ$-convergence are stated: The first is concerned with marginals that do not lie in the appropriate Orlicz space and guarantees $Γ$-convergence to the original Kantorovich problem, when smoothing the marginals. The second results gives convergence of a regularized and discretized problem to the unregularized, continuous problem.

Necessary conditions for variational regularization schemes

We study variational regularization methods in a general framework, more precisely those methods that use a discrepancy and a regularization functional. While several sets of sufficient conditions are known to obtain a regularization method, we start with an investigation of the converse question: How could necessary conditions for a variational method to provide a regularization method look like? To this end, we formalize the notion of a variational scheme and start with comparison of three different instances of variational methods. Then we focus on the data space model and investigate the role and interplay of the topological structure, the convergence notion and the discrepancy functional. Especially, we deduce necessary conditions for the discrepancy functional to fulfill usual continuity assumptions. The results are applied to discrepancy functionals given by Bregman distances and especially to the Kullback-Leibler divergence.

Heuristic parameter-choice rules for convex variational regularization based on error estimates

In this paper, we are interested in heuristic parameter choice rules for general convex variational regularization which are based on error estimates. Two such rules are derived and generalize those from quadratic regularization, namely the Hanke-Raus rule and quasi-optimality criterion. A posteriori error estimates are shown for the Hanke-Raus rule, and convergence for both rules is also discussed. Numerical results for both rules are presented to illustrate their applicability.

Elastic-Net Regularization: Error estimates and Active Set Methods

This paper investigates theoretical properties and efficient numerical algorithms for the so-called elastic-net regularization originating from statistics, which enforces simultaneously l^1 and l^2 regularization. The stability of the minimizer and its consistency are studied, and convergence rates for both a priori and a posteriori parameter choice rules are established. Two iterative numerical algorithms of active set type are proposed, and their convergence properties are discussed. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the features of the functional and algorithms.
