On the van der Waals interaction between a molecule and a half-infinite plate

We consider a molecule in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation interacting with a plate of infinite thickness, i.e, a half--space, which is perfectly conducting or dielectric. It is well--known in the physics literature that in this case the atom or molecule is attracted by the plate at sufficiently large distances. This effect is analogous to the well--known van der Waals interaction between neutral atoms or molecules. We prove that the interaction energy $W$ of the system is given by $W(r,v)= -C(v)r^{-3} + \mathcal{O}(r^{-4})$, where $r$ is the distance between the molecule and the plate and $v$ indicates their relative orientation. Moreover, $C(v)$ is positive and continuous, thus the atom or molecule is always pulled towards the plate at sufficiently large distances, for all relative orientations $v$. For some specific systems we provide sharper estimates of $W(r,v)$. This asymptotic behavior is well--known in the physics literature, however, we are not aware of any previous rigorous results, even on existence of a ground state of the system. For pedagogical reasons, we often start with the case of a hydrogen atom and then we generalize the arguments to deal with a general molecule.

On the asymptotic dynamics of 2-D magnetic quantum systems

In this work we provide results on the long time localisation in space (dynamical localisation) of certain two-dimensional magnetic quantum systems. The underlying Hamiltonian may have the form $H=H_0+W$, where $H_0$ is rotationally symmetric, has dense point spectrum, and $W$ is a perturbation that breaks the rotational symmetry. In the latter case, we also give estimates for the growth of the angular momentum operator in time.

On the global well-posedness of the quadratic NLS on $L^2(\mathbb{R}) + H^1(\mathbb{T})$

We study the one dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with power nonlinearity $|u|^{α- 1} u$ for $α\in [1,5]$ and initial data $u_0 \in L^2(\mathbb{R}) + H^1(\mathbb{T})$. We show via Strichartz estimates that the Cauchy problem is locally well-posed. In the case of the quadratic nonlinearity ($α= 2$) we obtain global well-posedness in the space $C(\mathbb{R}, L^2(\mathbb R) + H^1(\mathbb T))$ via Gronwall's inequality.

Thresholds for Existence of dispersion management solitons for general nonlinearities

We prove a threshold phenomenon for the existence of solitary solutions of the dispersion management equation for positive and zero average dispersion for a large class of nonlinearities. These solutions are found as minimizers of nonlinear and nonlocal variational problems which are invariant under a large non-compact group. There exists a threshold such that minimizers exist when the power of the solitons is bigger than the threshold. Our proof of existence of minimizers is rather direct and avoids the use of Lions' concentration compactness argument. The existence of dispersion managed solitons is shown under very mild conditions on the dispersion profile and the nonlinear polarization of optical active medium, which cover all physically relevant cases for the dispersion profile and a large class of nonlinear polarizations, for example, they are allowed to change sign.

Exponential Decay for dispersion managed solitons for general dispersion profiles

We show that any weak solution of the Gabitov-Turitsyn equation describing dispersion managed solitons together with its Fourier transform decay exponentially. This strong regularity result extends a recent result of Erdogan, Hundertmark and Lee in two directions, to arbitrary non-negative average dispersion and, more importantly, to rather general dispersion profiles, which cover most, if not all, physically relevant cases.

Analyticity of extremisers to the Airy Strichartz inequality

We prove that there exists an extremal function to the Airy Strichartz inequality, $e^{-t\partial_x^3}: L^2(\mathbb{R})\to L^8_{t,x}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ by using the linear profile decomposition. Furthermore we show that, if $f$ is an extremiser, then $f$ is extremely fast decaying in Fourier space and so $f$ can be extended to be an entire function on the whole complex domain. The rapid decay of the Fourier transform of extremisers is established with a bootstrap argument which relies on a refined bilinear Airy Strichartz estimate and a weighted Strichartz inequality.

On non-local variational problems with lack of compactness related to non-linear optics

We give a simple proof of existence of solutions of the dispersion manage- ment and diffraction management equations for zero average dispersion, respectively diffraction. These solutions are found as maximizers of non-linear and non-local vari- ational problems which are invariant under a large non-compact group. Our proof of existence of maximizer is rather direct and avoids the use of Lions' concentration compactness argument or Ekeland's variational principle.

Eigenvalue bounds in the gaps of Schrodinger operators and Jacobi matrices

We consider $C=A+B$ where $A$ is selfadjoint with a gap $(a,b)$ in its spectrum and $B$ is (relatively) compact. We prove a general result allowing $B$ of indefinite sign and apply it to obtain a $(δV)^{d/2}$ bound for perturbations of suitable periodic Schrodinger operators and a (not quite)Lieb-Thirring bound for perturbations of algebro-geometric almost periodic Jacobi matrices.

Bounds on the spectral shift function and the density of states

We study spectra of Schrödinger operators on $\RR^d$. First we consider a pair of operators which differ by a compactly supported potential, as well as the corresponding semigroups. We prove almost exponential decay of the singular values $μ_n$ of the difference of the semigroups as $n\to \infty$ and deduce bounds on the spectral shift function of the pair of operators. Thereafter we consider alloy type random Schrödinger operators. The single site potential $u$ is assumed to be non-negative and of compact support. The distributions of the random coupling constants are assumed to be Hölder continuous. Based on the estimates for the spectral shift function, we prove a Wegner estimate which implies Hölder continuity of the integrated density of states.

Bound States and the Szego Condition for Jacobi Matrices and Schrodinger Operators

For Jacobi matrices with a_n = 1+(-1)^n alpha n^{-gamma}, b_n = (-1)^n beta n^{-gamma}, we study bound states and the SzegHo condition. We provide a new proof of Nevai's result that if gamma > 1/2, the Szego condition holds, which works also if one replaces (-1)^n by cos(mu n). We show that if alpha = 0, beta not equal to 0, and gamma < 1/2, the Szego condition fails. We also show that if gamma = 1, alpha and beta are small enough (beta^2 + 8 alpha^2 < 1/24 will do), then the Jacobi matrix has finitely many bound states (for alpha = 0, beta large, it has infinitely many).

Variational Estimates for Discrete Schrödinger Operators with Potentials of Indefinite Sign

Let $H$ be a one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator. We prove that if $σ_{\ess} (H)\subset [-2,2]$, then $H-H_0$ is compact and $σ_{\ess}(H)=[-2,2]$. We also prove that if $H_0 + \frac14 V^2$ has at least one bound state, then the same is true for $H_0 +V$. Further, if $H_0 + \frac14 V^2$ has infinitely many bound states, then so does $H_0 +V$. Consequences include the fact that for decaying potential $V$ with $\liminf_{|n|\to\infty} |nV(n)| > 1$, $H_0 +V$ has infinitely many bound states; the signs of $V$ are irrelevant. Higher-dimensional analogues are also discussed.

The Fate of Lifshitz Tails in Magnetic Fields

We investigate the integrated density of states of the Schrödinger operator in the Euclidean plane with a perpendicular constant magnetic field and a random potential. For a Poisson random potential with a non-negative algebraically decaying single-impurity potential we prove that the leading asymptotic behaviour for small energies is always given by the corresponding classical result in contrast to the case of vanishing magnetic field. We also show that the integrated density of states of the operator restricted to the eigenspace of any Landau level exhibits the same behaviour. For the lowest Landau level, this is in sharp contrast to the case of a Poisson random potential with a delta-function impurity potential.
