Gauge-Higgs models from Nilmanifolds

We consider the compactification of a Yang-Mills theory on a three-dimensional nilmanifold. The compactification generates a Yang-Mills theory in four space-time dimensions, coupled to a specific scalar sector. The compactification geometry gives rise to masses for the zero-modes, proportional to the twist parameter of the nilmanifold. We study the simple example of an SU (3) model broken by a non-trivial vacuum of the scalar potential which generates three mass scales, two being at tree level, and the third one at loop level. We point out the relevance of general twisted geometries for model building and in particular for gauge-Higgs type models, as the twist generates tree-level mass hierarchies useful for grand unification and for the Higgs sector in electroweak symmetry breaking.

Relative scale separation in orbifolds of $S^2$ and $S^5$

In orbifold vacua containing an $S^q/Γ$ factor, we compute the relative order of scale separation, $r$, defined as the ratio of the eigenvalue of the lowest-lying $Γ$-invariant state of the scalar Laplacian on $S^q$, to the eigenvalue of the lowest-lying state. For $q=2$ and $Γ$ finite subgroup of $SO(3)$, or $q=5$ and $Γ$ finite subgroup of $SU(3)$, the maximal relative order of scale separation that can be achieved is $r=21$ or $r=12$, respectively. For smooth $S^5$ orbifolds, the maximal relative scale separation is $r=4.2$. Methods from invariant theory are very efficient in constructing $Γ$-invariant spherical harmonics, and can be readily generalized to other orbifolds.

A new mechanism for symmetry breaking from nilmanifolds

We present a method to obtain a scalar potential at tree level from a pure gauge theory on nilmanifolds, a class of negatively-curved compact spaces, and discuss the spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism induced in the residual Minkowski space after compactification at low energy. We show that the scalar potential is completely determined by the gauge symmetries and the geometry of the compact manifold. In order to allow for simple analytic calculations we consider three extra space dimensions as the minimal example of a nilmanifold, therefore considering a pure Yang-Mills theory in seven dimensions.

AdS$_2$ Type-IIA Solutions and Scale Separation

In this note we examine certain classes of solutions of IIA theory without sources, of the form AdS$_2\times {\cal M}^{(1)}\times \dots \times {\cal M}^{(n)}$, where ${\cal M}^{(i)}$ are Riemannian spaces. We show that large hierarchies of curvatures can be obtained between the different factors, however the absolute value of the scalar curvature of AdS$_2$ must be of the same order or larger than the absolute values of the scalar curvatures of all the other factors.

Consistent truncation on Calabi-Yau and Nearly-Kähler manifolds

We complete and extend the analysis of arXiv:1903.10504 in several directions: we put the 4d theory, arising from the IIA consistent truncation of the universal sector of Calabi-Yau compactification, in a form manifestly consistent with 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity. We go beyond the universal sector and construct the 4d effective action of IIA compactified on Calabi-Yau's with $h^{1,1}=1$, $h^{2,1}\geq1$, in the presence of background flux and fermionic condensates. For ALE gravitational instantons, we show that the putative quartic gravitino condensate is non-negative, as required for the existence of (formal) de Sitter solutions of the 4d theory. We discuss some of the issues in promoting these formal solutions to full-fledged string theory de Sitter solutions. We also extend the Nearly-Kähler consistent truncation of arXiv:1810.06344 to the complete bosonic sector of one vector multiplet and one hypermultiplet.

Gravitational waves in warped compactifications

We study gravitational waves propagating on a warped Minkowski space-time with D-4 compact extra dimensions. While Kaluza-Klein scales are typically too high for any current detection, we analyse how the warp factor changes the Kaluza-Klein spectrum of gravitational waves. To that end we provide a complete and explicit expression for the warp factor, as well as the Green's function, on a d-dimensional torus. This expression differs from that of braneworld models and should find further uses in string compactifications. We then evaluate the Kaluza-Klein spectrum of gravitational waves. Our preliminary numerical results indicate not only a deviation from the standard toroidal spectrum, but also that the first masses get lowered due to the warp factor.

N=1 Chern-Simons-matter theory and localization

We consider the most general, classically-conformal, three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ Chern-Simons-matter theory with global symmetry $Sp(2)$ and gauge group $U(N)\times U(N)$. We show that the Lagrangian in the on-shell formulation of the theory admits one more free parameter as compared to the theory formulated in off-shell $\mathcal{N}=1$ superspace. The theory on $T^3$ can be formally localized. We partially carry out the localization procedure for the theory on $T^3$ with periodic boundary conditions. In particular we show that restricting to the saddle points with vanishing gauge connection gives a trivial contribution to the partition function, i.e. the bosonic and fermionic contributions exactly cancel each other.

Towards Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter on Nilmanifolds

We present a first study of the field spectrum on a class of negatively-curved compact spaces: nilmanifolds or twisted tori. This is a case where analytical results can be obtained, allowing to check numerical methods. We focus on the Kaluza-Klein expansion of a scalar field. The results are then applied to a toy model where a natural Dark Matter candidate arises as a stable massive state of the bulk scalar.

3d N=1 effective supergravity and F-theory from M-theory on fourfolds

We consider 3d N=1 M-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds, and the effective 3d theory of light modes obtained by reduction from eleven dimensions. We study in detail the mass spectrum at the vacuum and, by decoupling the massive multiplets, we derive the effective 3d N=1 theory in the large-volume limit up to quartic fermion terms. We show that in general it is an ungauged N=1 supergravity of the form expected from 3d supersymmetry. In particular the massless bosonic fields consist of the volume modulus and the axions originating from the eleven-dimensional three-form, while the moduli-space metric is locally isometric to hyperbolic space. We consider the F-theory interpretation of the 3d N=1 M-theory vacua in the light of the F-theory effective action approach. We show that these vacua generally have F-theory duals with circle fluxes, thus breaking 4d Poincaré invariance.

Generalized complex geometry of pure backgrounds in ten and eleven dimensions

Pure backgrounds are a natural generalization of supersymmetric Calabi-Yau compactifications in the presence of flux. They are described in the language of generalized SU(d) x SU(d) structures and generalized complex geometry, and they exhibit some interesting general patterns: the internal manifold is generalized Calabi-Yau, while the Ramond-Ramond flux is exact in a precise sense discussed in this paper. We have shown that although these two characteristics do persist in the case of generic ten-dimensional Euclidean type II pure backgrounds, they do not capture the full content of supersymmetry. We also discuss the uplift of real Euclidean type IIA pure backgrounds to supersymmetric backgrounds of Lorentzian eleven-dimensional supergravity.

IIA supergravity and M-theory on manifolds with SU(4) structure

We give the general form of supersymmetric backgrounds with two real supercharges of M-theory and type IIA supergravity (with non-zero Romans mass in general) of the form $\mathbb{R}^{1,d} \times \M_8$, d=1,2, on eight-dimensional manifolds with SU(4) structure. We point out a subtlety in the integrability theorems for low-dimensional supersymmetric compactifications. As a special case we examine Calabi-Yau flux vacua and we show that unbroken supersymmetry does not in general require the four-form flux to be (2,2) or primitive. Our results could be used to construct novel higher-dimensional analogues of the Klebanov-Strassler geometry. In the case of M-theory large-volume Calabi-Yau flux vacua our results are in agreement with partial supersymmetry breaking in three-dimensional N=2 supergravity. Alternatively, the conditions for supersymmetry can be expressed in terms of a real `superpotential' in accordance with three-dimensional N=1 supergravity. We present explicit examples of M-theory flux vacua on K3 \times K3, which however do not appear to possess F-theory duals with four-dimensional Poincaré invariance.

On the spin-2 Kaluza-Klein spectrum of AdS4 x S2(B4)

We perform a numerical study of the four-dimensional spin-2 Kaluza-Klein spectrum of supersymmetric AdS$_4\times S^2(\mathcal{B}_4)$ vacua and show that they do not exhibit scale separation. Our methods are generally applicable to similar problems where the compactification geometry is not known analytically, hence an analytic treatment of the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein masses is not available.

IIB supergravity on manifolds with SU(4) structure and generalized geometry

We consider N=(2,0) backgrounds of IIB supergravity on eight-manifolds M_8 with strict SU(4) structure. We give the explicit solution to the Killing spinor equations as a set of algebraic relations between irreducible su(4) modules of the fluxes and the torsion classes of M_8. One consequence of supersymmetry is that M_8 must be complex. We show that the conjecture of arxiv:1010.5789 concerning the correspondence between background supersymmetry equations in terms of generalized pure spinors and generalized calibrations for admissible static, magnetic D-branes, does not capture the full set of supersymmetry equations. We identify the missing constraints and express them in the form of a single pure-spinor equation which is well defined for generic SU(4)\times SU(4) backgrounds. This additional equation is given in terms of a certain analytic continuation of the generalized calibration form for codimension-2 static, magnetic D-branes.

Rigid 6D supersymmetry and localization

We construct rigid supersymmetric theories for interacting vector and tensor multiplets on six-dimensional Riemannian spin manifolds. Analyzing the Killing spinor equations, we derive the constraints on these theories. To this end, we reformulate the conditions for supersymmetry as a set of necessary and sufficient conditions on the geometry. The formalism is illustrated with a number of examples, including manifolds that are hermitian, strong Kaehler with torsion. As an application, we show that the path integral of pure super Yang-Mills theory defined on a Calabi-Yau threefold M_6 localizes on stable holomorphic bundles over M_6.

Rigid supersymmetric theories in 4d Riemannian space

We consider rigid supersymmetric theories in four-dimensional Riemannian spin manifolds. We build the Lagrangian directly in Euclidean signature from the outset, keeping track of potential boundary terms. We reformulate the conditions for supersymmetry as a set of conditions on the torsion classes of a suitable SU(2) or trivial G-structure. We illustrate the formalism with a number of examples including supersymmetric backgrounds with non-vanishing Weyl tensor.

Supersymmetric AdS vacua and separation of scales

The moduli space of the supersymmetric massive IIA AdS4xS2(B4) vacua, where S2(B4) is a two-sphere bundle over a four-dimensional Kaehler-Einstein base B4, includes three independent parameters which can be thought of as corresponding to the sizes of AdS4, B4 and the S2 fiber. It might therefore be expected that these vacua do not suffer from the absence of scale separation. We show that the independence of the geometric moduli survives flux quantization. However, we uncover an attractor behavior whereby all sizes flow to equality in some neighborhood of spacetime independently of the initial conditions set by the parameters of the solution. This is further confirmed by the study of the ratio of internal to external scalar curvatures. We also show that the asymptotic Kaluza-Klein spectrum of a ten-dimensional massive scalar is governed by a scale of the order of the AdS4 radius. Furthermore we point out that the curvature ratio in supersymmetric IIA AdS4 vacua with rigid SU(3) structure is of order one, indicating the absence of scale separation in this large class of vacua.

A recursive method for SYM n-point tree amplitudes

We present a recursive method for super Yang-Mills color-ordered n-point tree amplitudes based on the cohomology of pure spinor superspace in ten space-time dimensions. The amplitudes are organized into BRST covariant building blocks with diagrammatic interpretation. Manifestly cyclic expressions (no longer than one line each) are explicitly given up to n=10 and higher leg generalizations are straightforward.

Six Open String Disk Amplitude in Pure Spinor Superspace

The tree-level amplitude of six massless open strings is computed using the pure spinor formalism. The OPE poles among integrated and unintegrated vertices can be efficiently organized according to the cohomology of pure spinor superspace. The identification and use of these BRST structures and their interplay with the system of equations fulfilled by the generalized Euler integrals allow the full supersymmetric six-point amplitude to be written in compact form. Furthermore, the complete set of extended Bern-Carrasco-Johansson relations are derived from the monodromy properties of the disk world-sheet and explicitly verified for the supersymmetric numerator factors.

A consistent truncation of IIB supergravity on manifolds admitting a Sasaki-Einstein structure

We present a consistent truncation of IIB supergravity on manifolds admitting a Sasaki-Einstein structure, which keeps the metric and five real scalar fields. This theory can be further truncated to a constrained one-parameter family that depends on only the metric and one scalar, as well as to a theory with a metric and three scalars. The reduced theory admits supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric AdS_5 and AdS_4 x R solutions. We analyze the spectrum around the AdS critical points and identify the dual operators.

Flux compactification on smooth, compact three-dimensional toric varieties

Three-dimensional smooth, compact toric varieties (SCTV), when viewed as real six-dimensional manifolds, can admit G-structures rendering them suitable for internal manifolds in supersymmetric flux compactifications. We develop techniques which allow us to systematically construct G-structures on SCTV and read off their torsion classes. We illustrate our methods with explicit examples, one of which consists of an infinite class of toric CP^1 bundles. We give a self-contained review of the relevant concepts from toric geometry, in particular the subject of the classification of SCTV in dimensions less or equal to 3. Our results open up the possibility for a systematic construction and study of supersymmetric flux vacua based on SCTV.

Generalized geometry, calibrations and supersymmetry in diverse dimensions

We consider type II backgrounds of the form R^{1,d-1} x M^{10-d} for even d, preserving 2^{d/2} real supercharges; for d = 4, 6, 8 this is minimal supersymmetry in d dimensions, while for d = 2 it is N = (2,0) supersymmetry in two dimensions. For d = 6 we prove, by explicitly solving the Killing-spinor equations, that there is a one-to-one correspondence between background supersymmetry equations in pure-spinor form and D-brane generalized calibrations; this correspondence had been known to hold in the d = 4 case. Assuming the correspondence to hold for all d, we list the calibration forms for all admissible D-branes, as well as the background supersymmetry equations in pure-spinor form. We find a number of general features, including the following: The pattern of codimensions at which each calibration form appears exhibits a (mod 4) periodicity. In all cases one of the pure-spinor equations implies that the internal manifold is generalized Calabi-Yau. Our results are manifestly invariant under generalized mirror symmetry.

D=10 Super-Yang-Mills at O(alpha'^2)

Using superspace techniques, the complete and most general action of D=10 super-Yang--Mills theory is constructed at the alpha'^2 level. No other approximations, e.g., keeping only a subset of the allowed derivative terms, are used. The Lorentz structure of the alpha'^2 corrections is completely determined, while (depending on the gauge group) there is some freedom in the adjoint structure, which is given by a totally symmetric four-index tensor. We examine the second, non-linearly realised supersymmetry that may be present when the gauge group has a U(1) factor, and find that the constraints from linear and non-linear supersymmetry to a large extent coincide. However, the additional restrictions on the adjoint structure of the order alpha'^2 interactions following from the requirement of non-linear supersymmetry do not completely specify the symmetrised trace prescription.

The structure of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory: constraining higher-order corrections

We solve the superspace Bianchi identities for ten-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory without imposing any kind of constraints apart from the standard conventional one. In this way we obtain a set of algebraic conditions on certain fields which in the on-shell theory are constructed as composite ones out of the physical fields. These conditions must hence be satisfied by any kind of theory in ten dimensions invariant under supersymmetry and some, abelian or non-abelian, gauge symmetry. Deformations of the ordinary SYM theory (as well as the fields) are identified as elements of a certain spinorial cohomology, giving control over field redefinitions and the distinction between physically relevant higher-order corrections and those removable by field redefinitions. The conditions derived severely constrain theories involving F^2-level terms plus higher-order corrections, as for instance those derived from open strings as effective gauge theories on D-branes.
