Extensions of a scale-separated AdS$_4$ solution and their mass spectrum

We consider two extensions of the so-called DGKT solution, a 4d scale-separated anti-de Sitter (AdS) solution obtained as a compactification on a 6d torus orbifold. Each extension consists in a specific large $n$ expansion beyond the DGKT solution, where $n$ is the unbounded $F_4$-flux parameter. One of the extensions considered generalizes the known warped, partially backreacted solution. We analyse the two extensions in 10d massive type IIA supergravity as well as in a 4d effective theory, using a general warped compactification formalism, including axions. On top of known corrections to DGKT, we mainly get new ones from $F_4$; other fluxes are very constrained by flux quantization. In each extension, one would expect corresponding corrections to the mass spectrum, before reaching contributions from $α'$-corrections. But the mass spectrum turns out to be robust, and conformal dimensions remain unchanged.

Charting the landscape of (anti-) de Sitter and Minkowski solutions of 10d supergravities

We classify solutions of 10d type IIA/B supergravities with orientifolds, on a 4d maximally symmetric spacetime times a 6d group manifold. We then look for new solutions in previously unexplored solution classes, and find some: (anti-) de Sitter solutions with intersecting O4, O6 and D6, or Minkowski solutions with 3 intersecting O5, among others. We provide the numerical code that we developed for this purpose. We also prove new no-go theorems against (anti-) de Sitter solutions. We finally conjecture the absence of de Sitter solution for 2 or less intersecting source sets, implying that a 4d effective theory with de Sitter is at most N=1 supersymmetric.

Exploring the landscape of (anti-) de Sitter and Minkowski solutions: group manifolds, stability and scale separation

We classified in arXiv:2201.04152 certain 10d supergravity solutions with a 4d de Sitter, Minkowski or anti-de Sitter spacetime. We then found new solutions in previously unexplored classes. In this paper we study their properties, compare them to swampland conjectures, and make new observations. Using new numerical tools, we first identify all Lie algebras underlying the 6d group manifolds, allowing us to discuss their compactness. We then investigate scale separation, and prove related no-go theorems. Last but not least, we automatize and analyze the stability of all solutions. This leads us to propose the Massless Minkowski Conjecture, claiming the systematic presence of a 4d massless scalar field.

A new mechanism for symmetry breaking from nilmanifolds

We present a method to obtain a scalar potential at tree level from a pure gauge theory on nilmanifolds, a class of negatively-curved compact spaces, and discuss the spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism induced in the residual Minkowski space after compactification at low energy. We show that the scalar potential is completely determined by the gauge symmetries and the geometry of the compact manifold. In order to allow for simple analytic calculations we consider three extra space dimensions as the minimal example of a nilmanifold, therefore considering a pure Yang-Mills theory in seven dimensions.

Gravitational waves in warped compactifications

We study gravitational waves propagating on a warped Minkowski space-time with D-4 compact extra dimensions. While Kaluza-Klein scales are typically too high for any current detection, we analyse how the warp factor changes the Kaluza-Klein spectrum of gravitational waves. To that end we provide a complete and explicit expression for the warp factor, as well as the Green's function, on a d-dimensional torus. This expression differs from that of braneworld models and should find further uses in string compactifications. We then evaluate the Kaluza-Klein spectrum of gravitational waves. Our preliminary numerical results indicate not only a deviation from the standard toroidal spectrum, but also that the first masses get lowered due to the warp factor.

New de Sitter solutions of 10d type IIB supergravity

We find and study 17 new de Sitter solutions of ten-dimensional (10d) type IIB supergravity with intersecting D5-branes and orientifold O5-planes, as well as a new Minkowski one. These solutions are obtained numerically on 6d group manifolds, the compactness of which is established for 4 of them. We show that all our de Sitter solutions are perturbatively unstable, using a restricted 4d effective theory of four scalar fields. We finally analyse whether our solutions can be promoted to classical string backgrounds. Several of them appear as good candidates, as they satisfy all requirements imposed so far.

The web of swampland conjectures and the TCC bound

We consider the swampland distance and de Sitter conjectures, of respective order one parameters $λ$ and $c$. Inspired by the recent Trans-Planckian Censorship conjecture (TCC), we propose a generalization of the distance conjecture, which bounds $λ$ to be a half of the TCC bound for $c$, i.e. $λ\geq \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{\frac{2}{3}}$ in 4d. In addition, we propose a correspondence between the two conjectures, relating the tower mass $m$ on the one side to the scalar potential $V$ on the other side schematically as $m\sim |V|^{\frac{1}{2}}$, in the large distance limit. These proposals suggest a generalization of the scalar weak gravity conjecture, and are supported by a variety of examples. The lower bound on $λ$ is verified explicitly in many cases in the literature. The TCC bound on $c$ is checked as well on ten different no-go theorems, which are worked-out in detail, and $V$ is analysed in the asymptotic limit. In particular, new results on 4d scalar potentials from type II compactifications are obtained.

A no-go theorem for monodromy inflation

We study the embedding of the monodromy inflation mechanism by E. Silverstein and A. Westphal (2008) in a concrete compactification setting. To that end, we look for an appropriate vacuum of type IIA supergravity, corresponding to the minimum of the inflaton potential. We prove a no-go theorem on the existence of such a vacuum, using ten-dimensional equations of motion. Anti-de Sitter and Minkowski vacua are ruled out; de Sitter vacua are not excluded, but have a lower bound on their cosmological constant which is too high for phenomenology.

New supersymmetric vacua on solvmanifolds

We obtain new supersymmetric flux vacua of type II supergravities on four-dimensional Minkowski times six-dimensional solvmanifolds. The orientifold O4, O5, O6, O7, or O8-planes and D-branes are localized. All vacua are in addition not T-dual to a vacuum on the torus. The corresponding solvmanifolds are proven to be Calabi-Yau, with explicit metrics. Other Ricci flat solvmanifolds are shown to be only Kähler.

Towards Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter on Nilmanifolds

We present a first study of the field spectrum on a class of negatively-curved compact spaces: nilmanifolds or twisted tori. This is a case where analytical results can be obtained, allowing to check numerical methods. We focus on the Kaluza-Klein expansion of a scalar field. The results are then applied to a toy model where a natural Dark Matter candidate arises as a stable massive state of the bulk scalar.

Non-geometric fluxes versus (non)-geometry

Non-geometry has been introduced when considering a new type of string backgrounds, for which stringy symmetries serve as transition functions between patches of the target space. Then, some terms in the potential of four-dimensional gauged supergravities, generated by so-called non-geometric fluxes, have been argued to find a higher-dimensional origin in these backgrounds, even if a standard compactification on those cannot be made. We present here recent results clarifying the relation between these two settings. Thanks to a field redefinition, we reformulate the NSNS Lagrangian in such a way that the non-geometric fluxes appear in ten dimensions. In addition, if an NSNS field configuration is non-geometric, its reformulation in terms of the new fields can restore a standard geometry. A dimensional reduction is then possible, and leads to the non-geometric terms in the four-dimensional potential. Reformulating similarly doubled field theory, we get a better understanding of the role of the non-geometric fluxes, and rewrite the Lagrangian in a manifestly diffeomorphism-covariant manner. We finally discuss the relevance of the field redefinition and the non-geometric fluxes when studying the non-commutativity of string coordinates.

Supersymmetry with non-geometric fluxes, or a $β$-twist in Generalized Geometry and Dirac operator

We study ten-dimensional supersymmetric vacua with NSNS non-geometric fluxes, in the framework of $β$-supergravity. We first provide expressions for the fermionic supersymmetry variations. Specifying a compactification ansatz to four dimensions, we deduce internal Killing spinor equations. These supersymmetry conditions are then reformulated in terms of pure spinors, similarly to standard supergravity vacua admitting an SU(3)xSU(3) structure in Generalized Complex Geometry. The standard d-H acting on the pure spinors is traded for a generalized Dirac operator D, depending here on the non-geometric fluxes. Rewriting it with an exponential of the bivector $β$ leads us to discuss the geometrical characterisation of the vacua in terms of a $β$-twist, in analogy to the standard twist by the b-field. Thanks to D, we also propose a general expression for the superpotential to be obtained from standard supergravities or $β$-supergravity, and verify its agreement with formulas of the literature. We finally comment on the Ramond-Ramond sector, and discuss a possible relation to intermediate or dynamical SU(2) structure solutions.

NS-branes, source corrected Bianchi identities, and more on backgrounds with non-geometric fluxes

In the first half of the paper, we study in details NS-branes, including the NS5-brane, the Kaluza-Klein monopole and the exotic $5_2^2$- or Q-brane, together with Bianchi identities for NSNS (non)-geometric fluxes. Four-dimensional Bianchi identities are generalized to ten dimensions with non-constant fluxes, and get corrected by a source term in presence of an NS-brane. The latter allows them to reduce to the expected Poisson equation. Without sources, our Bianchi identities are also recovered by squaring a nilpotent $Spin(D,D) \times \mathbb{R}^+$ Dirac operator. Generalized Geometry allows us in addition to express the equations of motion explicitly in terms of fluxes. In the second half, we perform a general analysis of ten-dimensional geometric backgrounds with non-geometric fluxes, in the context of $β$-supergravity. We determine a well-defined class of such vacua, that are non-geometric in standard supergravity: they involve $β$-transforms, a manifest symmetry of $β$-supergravity with isometries. We show as well that these vacua belong to a geometric T-duality orbit.

β-supergravity: a ten-dimensional theory with non-geometric fluxes, and its geometric framework

We present a ten-dimensional theory, named β-supergravity, that contains non-geometric fluxes and could uplift some four-dimensional gauged supergravities. Building on earlier work, we study here its NSNS sector, where Q- and R-fluxes are precisely identified. Interestingly, the Q-flux is captured in an analogue of the Levi-Civita spin connection, giving rise to a second curvature scalar. We reproduce the ten-dimensional Lagrangian using the Generalized Geometry formalism; this provides us with enlightening interpretations of the new structures. Then, we derive the equations of motion of our theory, and finally discuss further aspects: the dimensional reduction to four dimensions and comparison to gauged supergravities, the obtention of ten-dimensional purely NSNS solutions, the extensions to other sectors and new objects, the supergravity limit, and eventually the symmetries, in particular the βgauge transformation. We also introduce the related notion of a generalized cotangent bundle.

(Non-)commutative closed string on T-dual toroidal backgrounds

In this paper we investigate the connection between (non-)geometry and (non-)commutativity of the closed string. To this end, we solve the classical string on three T-dual toroidal backgrounds: a torus with H-flux, a twisted torus and a non-geometric background with Q-flux. In all three situations we work under the assumption of a dilute flux and consider quantities to linear order in the flux density. Furthermore, we perform the first steps of a canonical quantization for the twisted torus, to derive commutators of the string expansion modes. We use them as well as T-duality to determine, in the non-geometric background, a commutator of two string coordinates, which turns out to be non-vanishing. We relate this non-commutativity to the closed string boundary conditions, and the non-geometric Q-flux.

A geometric action for non-geometric fluxes

We give a geometrical interpretation of the non-geometric Q and R fluxes. To this end we consider double field theory in a formulation that is related to the conventional one by a field redefinition taking the form of a T-duality inversion. The R flux is a tensor under diffeomorphisms and satisfies a non-trivial Bianchi identity. The Q flux can be viewed as part of a connection that covariantizes the winding derivatives with respect to diffeomorphisms. We give a higher-dimensional action with a kinetic term for the R flux and a 'dual' Einstein-Hilbert term containing the connection Q.

Non-Geometric Fluxes in Supergravity and Double Field Theory

In this paper we propose ten-dimensional realizations of the non-geometric fluxes Q and R. In particular, they appear in the NSNS Lagrangian after performing a field redefinition that takes the form of a T-duality transformation. Double field theory simplifies the computation of the field redefinition significantly, and also completes the higher-dimensional picture by providing a geometrical role for the non-geometric fluxes once the winding derivatives are taken into account. The relation to four-dimensional gauged supergravities, together with the global obstructions of non-geometry, are discussed.

preprint2011arXiv

A ten-dimensional action for non-geometric fluxes

The NSNS Lagrangian of ten-dimensional supergravity is rewritten via a change of field variables inspired by Generalized Complex Geometry. We obtain a new metric and dilaton, together with an antisymmetric bivector field which leads to a ten-dimensional version of the non-geometric Q-flux. Given the involved global aspects of non-geometric situations, we prescribe to use this new Lagrangian, whose associated action is well-defined in some examples investigated here. This allows us to perform a standard dimensional reduction and to recover the usual contribution of the Q-flux to the four-dimensional scalar potential. An extension of this work to include the R-flux is discussed. The paper also contains a brief review on non-geometry.

Heterotic string from a higher dimensional perspective

The (abelian bosonic) heterotic string effective action, equations of motion and Bianchi identity at order alpha prime in ten dimensions, are shown to be equivalent to a higher dimensional action, its derived equations of motion and Bianchi identity. The two actions are the same up to the gauge fields: the latter are absorbed in the higher dimensional fields and geometry. This construction is inspired by heterotic T-duality, which becomes natural in this higher dimensional theory. We also prove the equivalence of the heterotic string supersymmetry conditions with higher dimensional geometric conditions. Finally, some known Kahler and non-Kahler heterotic solutions are shown to be trivially related from this higher dimensional perspective, via a simple exchange of directions. This exchange can be encoded in a heterotic T-duality, and it may also lead to new solutions.

Supersymmetry breaking branes on solvmanifolds and de Sitter vacua in string theory

We consider IIA compactifications on solvmanifolds with O6/D6 branes and study the conditions for obtaining de Sitter vacua in ten dimensions. While this is a popular set-up for searching de Sitter vacua, we propose a new method to include supersymmetry breaking sources. For space-time filling branes preserving bulk supersymmetry, the energy density can easily be extremized with respect to all fields, thanks to the replacement of the DBI action by a pullback of a special form given by a pure spinor. For sources breaking bulk supersymmetry, we propose to replace the DBI action by the pullback of a more general polyform, which is no longer pure. This generalization provides corrections to the energy-momentum tensor which give a positive contribution to the cosmological constant. We find a de Sitter solution to all (bulk and world-volume) equations derived from this action. We argue it solves the equations derived from the standard source action. The paper also contains a review of solvmanifolds.
