Solutions for Mixed States in Open Bosonic String Theory

We describe the family of normalizable solutions in linearized open string field theory, defined by $QΨ_0=0$ ($Q$ is BRST charge) understood in the sense $<<QΨ_0,Φ>>=0$ for an arbitrary string field $Φ$. The solutions depend on shifted partition numbers and are parametrized in terms of values of $ζ$-function at pairs of positive numbers greater than 2. We argue that the operators, defined by these solutions, create mixed quantum-mechanical states by acting on the vacuum (as opposed to standard vertex operators, creating the pure states with definite masses and spins).

Higher Spins as Rolling Tachyons in Open String Field Theory

We find a simple analytic solution in open string field theory which, in the on-shell limit, generates a tower of higher spin vertex operators in bosonic string theory. The solution is related to irregular off-shell vertex operators for Gaiotto states. The wavefunctions for the irregular vertex operators are described by equations following from the cubic effective action for generalized rolling tachyons, indicating that the evolution from flat to collective higher-spin background in string field theory occurs according to cosmological pattern. We discuss the relation between nonlocalities of the rolling tachyon action and those of higher spin interactions.

Irregular Vertex Operators for Irregular Conformal Blocks

We construct the free field representation of irregular vertex operators of arbitrary rank which generates simultaneous eigenstates of positive modes of Virasoro and W symmetry generators. The irregular vertex operators turn out to be the exponentials of combinations of derivatives of Liouville or Toda fields, creating irregular coherent states. We compute examples of correlation functions of these operators and study their operator algebra.

Super-spectral curve of irregular conformal blocks

We use super-spectral curve to investigate irregular conformal states of integer and half-odd integer rank. The spectral curve is the loop equation of supersymmetrized irregular matrix model. The case of integer rank corresponds to the colliding limit of supersymmetric vertex operators of NS sector and half-odd integer to the Ramond sectors. The spectral curve is simply integrable at Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit and the partition function (inner product of irregular conformal state) is obtained from the superconformal structure manifest in the spectral curve. We present some explicit forms of the partition function of integer (NS sector) and of half-odd ranks (Ramond sector).

Vertex Operators for Irregular Conformal Blocks: Supersymmetric Case

We construct supersymmetric irregular vertex operators of arbitrary rank, appearing in the colliding limit of primary fields. We find that the structure of the supersymmetric irregular vertices differs significantly from the bosonic case: upon supersymmetrization, the irregular operators are no longer the eigenstates of positive Virasoro and $W_N$ generators but block-diagonalize them. We relate the block-diagonal structure of the irregular vertices to contributions of the Ramond sector to the colliding limit.

A Note on GSO-Free RNS Superstrings and Pure Spinor Constraint

Using an elementary perturbative open string field theory solution involving a twistor-like parameter, we study the cohomology of new nilpotent BRST charge corresponding to the space-time background defined by this solution. The BRST cohomology of the deformed background automatically cuts off the GSO-odd spectrum in RNS superstring theory and keeps the GSO-even spectrum intact, without a need of GSO-projection. The on-shell constraints in the GSO-even sector get deformed in the new background, corresponding to BRST type transformations of the low-energy effective action with the ghost-like commuting spinor parameter satisfying the pure spinor constraint in $d=10$.

Higher Spins at the Quintic Order: Localization Effect and Simplifications

We investigate the special case of quintic interactions for massless higher spin gauge fields using the string-theoretic vertex operator construction for higher spin gauge fields in Vasiliev's frame-like formalism. We compute explicitly the related 5-point interaction vertex in the low energy limit of string theory and find that: the structure of the quintic $s_1-s_2-s_3-s_4-s_5$ higher spin interaction gets drastically simplified and localized if a) the spin values satisfy the constraint $s_1+s_2+s_3=s_4+s_5+2$ (and, more generally, if the sum of three spin values roughly equals the sum of the remaining two b) One of the spin values, $s_4$ or $s_5$ is sufficiently small. In this paper, the explicit computation is done for the case $s_4=4$

Non-commutativity from the double sigma model

We show how non-commutativity arises from commutativity in the double sigma model. We demonstrate that this model is intrinsically non-commutative by calculating the propagators. In the simplest phase configuration, there are two dual copies of commutative theories. In general rotated frames, one gets a non-commutative theory and a commutative partner. Thus a non-vanishing $B$ also leads to a commutative theory. Our results imply that $O\left(D,D\right)$ symmetry unifies not only the big and small torus physics, but also the commutative and non-commutative theories. The physical interpretations of the metric and other parameters in the double sigma model are completely dictated by the boundary conditions. The open-closed relation is also an $O(D,D)$ rotation and naturally leads to the Seiberg-Witten map. Moreover, after applying a second dual rotation, we identify the description parameter in the Seiberg-Witten map as an $O(D,D)$ group parameter and all theories are non-commutative under this composite rotation. As a bonus, the propagators of general frames in double sigma model for open string are also presented.

Solutions in Bosonic String Field Theory and Higher Spin Algebras in AdS

We find a class of analytic solutions in open bosonic string field theory, parametrized by the chiral copy of higher spin algebra in $AdS_3$. The solutions are expressed in terms of the generating function for the products of Bell polynomials in derivatives of bosonic space-time coordinates $X^m(z)$ of the open string, which form is determined in this work. The products of these polynomials form a natural operator algebra realizations of $W_\infty$ (area-preserving diffeomorphisms), enveloping algebra of SU(2) and higher spin algebra in $AdS_3$. The class of SFT solutions found can, in turn, be interpreted as the "enveloping of enveloping", or the enveloping of $AdS_3$ higher spin algebra. We also discuss the extensions of this class of solutions to superstring theory and their relations to higher spin algebras in higher space-time dimensions.

New analytic solutions in String Field Theory: towards collective Higher Spin vacuum

We construct analytic solutions in cubic open superstring field theory at higher superconformal ghost numbers. The solutions are the pure ghost ones and are given by combinations of Bell polynomials of bosonized superconformal ghost fields multiplied by exponents of the bosonized ghosts. Based on the structure of the solutions, we conjecture them to describe the ghost part of collective vacuum for higher spin modes in open string theory.

Higher Spin Contributions to Holographic Fluid Dynamics in $AdS_5/CFT_4$

We calculate the graviton's $β$-function in $AdS$ string-theoretic sigma-model, perturbed by vertex operators for Vasiliev's higher spin gauge fields in $AdS_5$. The result is given by $β_{mn}=R_{mn}+4T_{mn}(g,u)$ (with the AdS radius set to 1 and the graviton polarized along the $AdS_5$ boundary), with the matter stress-energy tensor given by that of conformal holographic fluid in $d=4$, evaluated at the temperature given by $T={1\overπ}$. The stress-energy tensor is given by $T_{mn}={g_{mn}}+4u_mu_n+\sum_{N}T^{(N)}_{mn}$ where $u$ is the vector excitation satisfying $u^2=-1$ and $N$ is the order of the gradient expansion in the dissipative part of the tensor. We calculate the contributions up to N=2. The higher spin excitations contribute to the $β$-function, ensuring the overall Weyl covariance of the matter stress tensor. We conjecture that the structure of gradient expansion in $d=4$ conformal hydrodynamics at higher orders is controlled by the higher spin operator algebra in $AdS_5$.

String Theory and Emergent AdS Geometry in Higher Spin Field Theories

We analyze the Weyl invariance constraints on higher spin vertex operators in open superstring theory describing massless higher spin gauge field excitations in d-dimensional space-time. We show that these constraints lead to low-energy equations of motion for higher spin fields in AdS space, with the leading order beta-function for the higher spin fields producing Fronsdal's operator in $AdS_{d+1}$, despite that the higher spin vertex operators are originally defined in flat background. The correspondence between the $β$-function in string theory and $AdS_{d+1}$ Fronsdal operators in space-time is found to be exact for $d=4$, while for other space-time dimensions it requires modifications of manifest expressions for the higher spin vertex operators. We argue that the correspondence considered in this paper is the leading order of more general isomorphism between Vasiliev's equations and equations of motion of extended open string field theory (OSFT), generalized to include the higher spin operators.

Higher Spin Holography and AdS String Sigma-Model

We analyze cubic spin 3 interaction in AdS space using the higher spin extension of string-theoretic sigma-model constructed in our previous work, which low energy limit is described by AdS vacuum. We find that, in the leading order of the cosmological constant, the spin 3 correlator on the AdS4 string theory side reproduces the structure of 3 point function of composite operators, quadratic in free fields, in the dual vector model. The cancellation of terms violating higher spin holography is related to the value of the Liouville background charge in four dimensions.

String Amplitudes and Frame-like Formalism for Higher Spins

We analyze open string vertex operators describing connection gauge fields for spin 3 in Vasiliev's frame-like formalism and perform their extended BRST analysis. Gauge symmetry transformations, generalized zero torsion constraints relating extra fields to the dynamical frame-like field and relation between dynamical frame-like field and fully symmetric Fronsdal's field for spin 3 are all realized in terms of BRST constraints on these vertex operators in string theory. Using the construction, we analyze the 3-point correlator for spin 3 field and calculate Chern-Simons type cubic interactions described by 3-derivative Berends-Burgers-van Dam (BBD) type vertex in the frame-like formalism.

A String Model for AdS Gravity and Higher Spins

We construct a string sigma-model which low energy limit describes the anti de Sitter gravity and spin 3 massless fields in Vasiliev's frame-like formalism. The model is based on vertex operators generating vielbein and connection fields in the Mac Dowell - Mansoury - Stelle - West (MMSW) formulation of gravity. The structure of the vertex operators is based on the hidden symmetry generators in RNS superstring theory, realizing the isometry group of the AdS space. The beta-function equations in the sigma-model lead to equations of motion in the MMSW gravity with negative cosmological constant with the AdS geometry being the vacuum solution. Generalizations for the higher spin fields are analyzed and equations of motion for spin 3 fields in $d=3$ in frame-like formalism are obtained in the low energy limit of string theory. These equations correspond to those of $sl(3,R)$ truncated Chern-Simons action based on higher spin algebra $hs(1,1)$.

Gravitational Couplings of Higher Spins from String Theory

We calculate the interaction 3-vertex of two massless spin 3 particles with a graviton using vertex operators for spin 3 fields in open string theory, constructed in our previous work. The massless spin 3 fields are shown to interact with the graviton through the linearized Weyl tensor, reproducing the result by Boulanger, Leclercq and Sundell. This is consistent with the general structure of the non-Abelian $2-s-s$ couplings, implying that the minimal number of space-time derivatives in the interaction vertices of two spin s and one spin 2 particle is equal to $2s-2$.

Higher Spins and Open Strings: Quartic Interactions

We analyze quartic gauge-invariant interactions of massless higher spin fields by using vertex operators constructed in our previous works and computing their four-point amplitudes in superstring theory. The kinematic part of the quartic interactions of the higher spins is determined by the matter structure of their vertex operators;the non-locality of the interactions is the consequence of specific ghost structure of these operators. We compute explicitly the four-point amplitude describing the complete gauge-invariant $1-1-3-3$ quartic interaction (two massless spin 3 particles interacting with two photons) and comment on more general $1-1-s-s$ cases, particularly pointing out the structure of $1-1-5-5$ coupling.

Ground Ring of Alpha-Symmetries and Sequence of RNS String Theories

We construct a sequence of nilpotent BRST charges in RNS superstring theory, based on new gauge symmetries on the worldsheet, found in this paper. These new local gauge symmetries originate from the global nonlinear space-time $α$-symmetries, shown to form a noncommutative ground ring in this work. The important subalgebra of these symmetries is $U(3)\times{X_6}$, where $X_6$ is solvable Lie algebra consisting of 6 elements with commutators reminiscent of the Virasoro type. We argue that the new BRST charges found in this work describe the kinetic terms in string field theories around curved backgrounds of the $AdS\times{CP}_n$-type, determined by the geometries of hidden extra dimensions induced by the global $α$-generators. The identification of these backgrounds is however left for the work in progress.

Interactions of Massless Higher Spin Fields From String Theory

We construct vertex operators for massless higher spin fields in RNS superstring theory and compute some of their three-point correlators, describing gauge-invariant cubic interactions of the massless higher spins. The Fierz-Pauli on-shell conditions for the higher spins (including tracelessness and vanishing divergence) follow from the BRST-invariance conditions for the vertex operators constructed in this paper. The gauge symmetries of the massless higher spins emerge as a result of the BRST nontriviality conditions for these operators, being equivalent to transformations with the traceless gauge parameter in the Fronsdal's approach. The gauge invariance of the interaction terms of the higher spins is therefore ensured automatically by that of the vertex operators in string theory. We develop general algorithm to compute the cubic interactions of the massless higher spins and use it to explicitly describe the gauge-invariant interaction of two $s=3$ and one $s=4$ massless particles.

New BRST Charges in RNS Superstring Theory and deformed Pure Spinors

We show that new BRST charges in RNS superstring theory with nonstandard ghost numbers, constructed in our recent work, can be mapped to deformed pure spinor (PS) superstring theories, with the nilpotent pure spinor BRST charge $Q_{PS}=\oint{λ^α}d_α$ still retaining its form but with singular operator products between commuting spinor variables $λ^α$. Despite the OPE singularities, the pure spinor condition $λγ^mλ=0$ is still fulfilled in a weak sense, explained in the paper. The operator product singularities correspond to introducing interactions between the pure spinors. We conjecture that the leading singularity orders of the OPE between two interacting pure spinors is related to the ghost number of the corresponding BRST operator in RNS formalism. Namely, it is conjectured that the BRST operators of minimal superconformal ghost numbers $n=1,2,3...$ can be mapped to nilpotent BRST operators in the deformed pure spinor formalism with the OPE of two commuting spinors having a leading singularity order $λ(z)λ(w)\sim{O}(z-w)^{-2(n^2+6n+1)}$. The conjecture is checked explicitly for the first non-trivial case $n=1$.

(Non)triviality of Pure Spinors and Exact Pure Spinor - RNS Map

All the BRST-invariant operators in pure spinor formalism in $d=10$ can be represented as BRST commutators, such as $V=\lbrace{Q_{brst}},{θ_{+}\over{λ_{+}}}V\rbrace$ where $λ_{+}$ is the U(5) component of the pure spinor transforming as $1_{5\over2}$. Therefore, in order to secure non-triviality of BRST cohomology in pure spinor string theory, one has to introduce "small Hilbert space" and "small operator algebra" for pure spinors, analogous to those existing in RNS formalism. As any invariant vertex operator in RNS string theory can also represented as a commutator $V=\lbrace{Q_{brst}},LV\rbrace$ where $L=-4c\partialξξe^{-2ϕ}$, we show that mapping ${θ_{+}\over{λ_{+}}}$ to L leads to identification of the pure spinor variable $λ^α$ in terms of RNS variables without any additional non-minimal fields. We construct the RNS operator satisfying all the properties of $λ^α$ and show that the pure spinor BRST operator $\oint{λ^α{d_α}}$ is mapped (up to similarity transformation) to the BRST operator of RNS theory under such a construction. We also observe that BRST cohomology of pure spinor superstring theory contains vertex operators non-trivially coupled to the pure spinor ghost variable. The physical interpretation of these operators remains unclear.

Ghost Cohomologies and Hidden Space-Time Symmetries

We observe and study new non-linear global space-time symmetries of the full ghost+matter action of RNS superstring theory. We show that these surprising new symmetries are generated by the special worldsheet currents (vertex operators) of RNS superstring theory, violating the equivalence of superconformal ghost pictures. We review the questions of BRST invariance and non-triviality of picture-dependent vertex operators and show their relation to hidden space-time symmetries and hidden space-time dimensions. In particular, we relate the space-time transformations, induced by the picture-dependent currents, to the symmetries observed in the 2T physics approach.

On Noncommutativity in String Theory and D-Branes

By considering the B-field dynamical and studying its interaction with Ramond-Ramond (RR) background we observe the breaking of the B-field gauge symmetry in the effective action. This effect takes place due to non-perturbative coupling of the B-field to membrane topological charge. As a result, the B-field is renormalized in the RR backgrounds, making it impossible to obtain consistent non-commutative models with constant B-field. We argue that the gauge invariance is restored by introducing appropriate external D-brane configuration.

A Comment on a Fivebrane Term in Superalgebra

We review our recent discussion of fivebrane central terms that appear in the space-time superalgebra in D=10 provided that the space-time supercharges are taken in non-canonical pictures. We correct the mistake contained in the original version of the earlier paper hep-th/9703008 which suggested that the naive picture-changing of the superalgebra could give rise to the non-perturbative five-form term. The relation between picture-changing and p-brane central terms appears to be much more subtle, as is pointed out in the revised version of the mentioned paper.

Picture-Changing operators and Space-Time supersymmetry

We explore geometrical properties of fermionic vertex operators for a NSR superstring in order to establish connection between worldsheet and target space supersymmetries. The mechanism of picture-changing is obtained as a result of imposing certain constraints on a world-sheet gauge group of the NSR theory. It is found that picture-changing operators of various integer ghost numbers form a polynomial ring. By using properties of the picture-changing formalism we establish connection between the NSR and GS superstring theories. We explore the properties of the $κ$-symmetry in the NSR formalism and show that it leads to some new identities between correlation functions.

RR-Dilaton Interaction in a Type IIB Superstring

We analyze the interaction between the massless RR states with a dilaton in a type IIB superstring. By constructing vertex operators for massless and massive RR states and computing their correlation functions with a dilaton we find the Ramond-Ramond part of the superstring low-energy effective action. The RR terms appearing in the action do not contain the standard dilatonic factor (string coupling constant). The geometrical interpretation of this fact is presented. Namely we argue that the spin operators in the RR vertices effectively decrease the Euler character of the worldsheet by 1 unit. As a result, the additional dilatonic term proportional to string coupling constant appears in the worldsheet string action.
