Sterile neutrino dark matter: Impact of active-neutrino opacities

The resonant production of keV sterile-neutrino dark matter mainly takes place during the QCD epoch of the early universe. It has been argued that it could be strongly affected by the opacities (or damping rates) of active neutrinos, which receive non-perturbative QCD-contributions. We find that for lepton asymmetries $ n_{ L_α} /s $ below $ 10 ^ { -6 } $ the opacities significantly affect the sterile-neutrino yield, but that for larger asymmetries, which are necessary for producing a significant fraction of the dark matter, the yield is insensitive to changes of the opacities. Thus non-perturbative QCD contributions to the opacities at temperatures around 160 MeV will not affect this dark matter scenario. We obtain larger sterile-neutrino yields than previous studies, and thus weaker lower limits on the active-sterile mixing angle from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis.

Kinetic equations for sterile neutrinos from thermal fluctuations

We obtain non-linear kinetic equations for sterile neutrino occupancies and lepton minus baryon numbers by matching real time correlation functions of thermal fluctuations computed in an effective description to those computed in thermal quantum field theory. After expanding in the sterile-neutrino Yukawa couplings, the coefficients in the equations are written as real time correlation functions of Standard Model operators. Our kinetic equations are valid for an arbitrary number of sterile neutrinos of any mass spectrum. They can be used to describe, e.g., low-scale leptogenesis via neutrino oscillations, or sterile neutrino dark matter production in the Higgs phase.

Thermal production of ultrarelativistic right-handed neutrinos: Complete leading-order results

The thermal production of relativistic right-handed Majorana neutrinos is of importance for models of thermal leptogenesis in the early Universe. Right-handed neutrinos can be produced both by 1 <-> 2 decay or inverse decay and by 2 -> 2 scattering processes. In a previous publication, we have studied the production via 1 <-> 2 (inverse) decay processes. There we have shown that multiple scattering mediated by soft gauge boson exchange also contributes to the production rate at leading order, and gives a strong enhancement. Here we complete the leading order calculation by adding 2 -> 2 scattering processes involving either electroweak gauge bosons or third-generation quarks. We find that processes with gauge interactions give the most important contributions. We also obtain a new sum rule for the Hard Thermal Loop resummed fermion propagator.

Non-relativistic leptogenesis

In many phenomenologically interesting models of thermal leptogenesis the heavy neutrinos are non-relativistic when they decay and produce the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We propose a non-relativistic approximation for the corresponding rate equations in the non-resonant case, and a systematic way for computing relativistic corrections. We determine the leading order coefficients in these equations, and the first relativistic corrections. The non-relativistic approximation works remarkably well. It appears to be consistent with results obtained using a Boltzmann equation taking into account the momentum distribution of the heavy neutrinos, while being much simpler. We also compute radiative corrections to some of the coefficients in the rate equations. Their effect is of order 1% in the regime favored by neutrino oscillation data. We obtain the correct leading order lepton number washout rate in this regime, which leads to large (~ 20%) effects compared to previous computations.

Thermal production of relativistic Majorana neutrinos: Strong enhancement by multiple soft scattering

The production rate of heavy Majorana neutrinos is relevant for models of thermal leptogenesis in the early Universe. In the high temperature limit the production can proceed via the 1 <-> 2 (inverse) decays which are allowed by the thermal masses. We consider new production mechanisms which are obtained by including additional soft gauge interactions with the plasma. We show that an arbitrary number of such interactions gives leading order contributions, and we sum all of them. The rate turns out to be smooth in the region where the 1 <-> 2 processes are kinematically forbidden. At higher temperature it is enhanced by a factor 3 compared to the 1 <-> 2 rate.

Hard thermal loops for soft or collinear external momenta

We consider finite temperature 1-loop diagrams with hard loop momenta and an arbitrary number of external gauge fields when the external momenta are either soft, or near the light cone and nearly collinear with the loop momentum. We obtain a recursion relation for these diagrams which we translate into an equation for their generating functional. By integrating out the soft fields while keeping two collinear ones we find an integral equation, originally due to Arnold, Moore, and Yaffe, which sums the bremsstrahlung and pair annihilation contribution to the thermal photon production rate.

Can electroweak bubble walls run away?

In extensions of the Standard Model with SU(2) singlet scalar fields, there can be regions of parameter space for which the electroweak phase transition is first order already at the mean-field level of analysis. We show that in this case the phase interface (bubble wall) can become ultra-relativistic, with the relativistic gamma factor gamma = (1-v_{wall}^2)^{-1/2} growing linearly with the wall's propagation distance. We provide a simple criterion for determining whether the bubble wall "runs away" in this way or if gamma approaches a terminal value.

Perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of the non-abelian Boltzmann-Langevin equation

We study the Boltzmann-Langevin equation which describes the dynamics of hot Yang-Mills fields with typical momenta of order of the magnetic screening scale g^2 T. It is transformed into a path integral and Feynman rules are obtained. We find that the leading log Langevin equation can be systematically improved in a well behaved expansion in log(1/g)^-1. The result by Arnold and Yaffe that the leading log Langevin equation is still valid at next-to-leading-log order is confirmed. We also confirm their result for the next-to-leading-log damping coefficient, or color conductivity, which is shown to be gauge fixing independent for a certain class of gauges. The frequency scale g^2T does not contribute to this result, but it does contribute, by power counting, to the transverse gauge field propagator. Going beyond a perturbative expansion we find 1-loop ultraviolet divergences which cannot be removed by renormalizing the parameters in the Boltzmann-Langevin equation.

Diagrammatic approach to soft non-Abelian dynamics at high temperature

The dynamics of soft ($|\vec{p}|\sim g^2 T$) non-Abelian gauge fields at finite temperature is non-perturbative. The effective theory for the soft scale is determined by diagrams with external momenta $p_0\lsim g^2 T$, $|\vec{p}|\sim g^2 T$ and loop momenta larger than $g^2 T$. We consider the polarization tensor beyond the hard thermal loop approximation, which accounts for loop momenta of order $T$. There are higher loop diagrams, involving also the scale $gT$, which are as important as the hard thermal loops. These higher loop contributions are characteristic for non-Abelian gauge theories and their calculation is simplified by using the hard thermal loop effective theory. Remarkably, the effective one-loop polarization tensor is found to be gauge fixing independent and transverse at leading order in $g$. The transversality indicates that this approach leads to a gauge invariant effective theory.
