Low-power Mid-IR Supercontinuum and Rogue Wave Generation in Chalcogenide Waveguides

We present numerical results of supercontinuum (SC) generation in the mid-IR spectral region, specifically addressing the molecular fingerprint window ranging from 2.5 to 25 um. By solving the Generalized Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (GNLSE) in a chalcogenide waveguide, we demonstrate low-power SC generation beyond 10 um from a pump at 5 um. Further, we investigate the short-pulse and CW regimes, and show that a simple linear dispersion profile, applicable to a broad range of chalcogenide media, is sufficient to account for the broad SC generation, and yield rich pulse dynamics leading to the frequent occurrence of rogue wave events. Results are encouraging as they point to the feasibility of producing bright and coherent light, by means of single low-power tabletop laser pumping schemes, in a spectral region that finds applications in such diverse areas as molecular spectroscopy, metrology and tomography, among others, and that is not easily addressable with other light sources

On the effect of self-steepening in modulation instability

We revisit the problem of modulation instability (MI) in optical fibers, including higher-order dispersion terms, self-steepening, and Raman response. We derive expressions for the MI gain and use them to explore the role of self-steepening towards a high-power limit. We show that, contrary to common wisdom, there is a pump power level that maximizes the MI gain. Further increasing the power not only diminishes the gain, but eventually makes it disappear. We believe these findings to be of special relevance, for instance, when applied to the generation of supercontinuum in the mid and far infrared bands. Finally, numerical simulations confirming our analytical results are presented.

High-speed tunable photonic crystal fiber-based femtosecond soliton source without dispersion pre-compensation

We present a high-speed wavelength tunable photonic crystal fiber-based source capable of generating tunable femtosecond solitons in the infrared region. Through measurements and numerical simulation, we show that both the pulsewidth and the spectral width of the output pulses remain nearly constant over the entire tuning range from 860 to 1160 nm. This remarkable behavior is observed even when pump pulses are heavily chirped (7400 fs^2), which allows to avoid bulky compensation optics, or the use of another fiber, for dispersion compensation usually required by the tuning device.

Point-to-point and Point-to-multipoint CDMA Access Network with Enhanced Security

We propose a network implementation with enhanced security at the physical layer by means of time-hopping CDMA, supporting cryptographically secure point-to-point and point-to-multipoint communication. In particular, we analyze an active star topology optical network implementation capable of supporting 128 simultaneous users up to 20 km apart. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through numerical simulation.
