Indefinite nilsolitons and Einstein solvmanifolds

A nilsoliton is a nilpotent Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ with a metric such that $\operatorname{Ric}=λ\operatorname{Id}+D$, with $D$ a derivation. For indefinite metrics, this determines four different geometries, according to whether $λ$ and $D$ are zero or not. We illustrate with examples the greater flexibility of the indefinite case compared to the Riemannian setting. We determine the algebraic properties that $D$ must satisfy when it is nonzero. For each of the four geometries, we show that under suitable assumptions it is possible to extend the nilsoliton metric to an Einstein solvmanifold of the form $\mathfrak{g}\rtimes \mathbb{R}^k$. Conversely, we introduce a large class of indefinite Einstein solvmanifolds of the form $\mathfrak{g}\rtimes \mathbb{R}^k$ that determine a nilsoliton metric on $\mathfrak{g}$ by restriction. We show with examples that, unlike in the Riemannian case, one cannot establish a correspondence between the full classes of Einstein solvmanifolds and nilsolitons.

Some evidence for the Coleman-Oort conjecture

The Coleman-Oort conjecture says that for large $g$ there are no positive-dimensional Shimura subvarieties of $\mathsf{A}_g$ generically contained in the Jacobian locus. Counterexamples are known for $g\leq 7$. They can all be constructed using families of Galois coverings of curves satisfying a numerical condition. These families are already classified in cases where: a) the Galois group is cyclic, b) it is abelian and the family is 1-dimensional, and c) $g\leq 9$. By means of carefully designed computations and theoretical arguments excluding a large number of cases we are able to prove that for $g\leq 100$ there are no other families than those already known.

Diagram involutions and homogeneous Ricci-flat metrics

We introduce a combinatorial method to construct indefinite Ricci-flat metrics on nice nilpotent Lie groups. We prove that every nilpotent Lie group of dimension $\leq6$, every nice nilpotent Lie group of dimension $\leq7$ and every two-step nilpotent Lie group attached to a graph admits such a metric. We construct infinite families of Ricci-flat nilmanifolds associated to parabolic nilradicals in the simple Lie groups ${\rm SL}(n)$, ${\rm SO}(p,q)$, ${\rm Sp}(n,\mathbb R)$. Most of these metrics are shown not to be flat.

Indefinite Einstein metrics on nice Lie groups

We introduce a systematic method to produce left-invariant, non-Ricci-flat Einstein metrics of indefinite signature on nice nilpotent Lie groups. On a nice nilpotent Lie group, we give a simple algebraic characterization of non-Ricci-flat left-invariant Einstein metrics in both the class of metrics for which the nice basis is orthogonal and a more general class associated to order two permutations of the nice basis. We obtain classifications in dimension 8 and, under the assumption that the root matrix is surjective, dimension 9; moreover, we prove that Einstein nilpotent Lie groups of nonzero scalar curvature exist in every dimension $\geq 8$.

Einstein almost cokähler manifolds

We study an odd-dimensional analogue of the Goldberg conjecture for compact Einstein almost Kähler manifolds. We give an explicit non-compact example of an Einstein almost cokähler manifold that is not cokähler. We prove that compact Einstein almost cokähler manifolds with non-negative $*$-scalar curvature are cokähler (indeed, transversely Calabi-Yau); more generally, we give a lower and upper bound for the $*$-scalar curvature in the case that the structure is not cokähler. We prove similar bounds for almost Kähler Einstein manifolds that are not Kähler.

Invariant torsion and G_2-metrics

We introduce and study a notion of invariant intrinsic torsion geometry which appears, for instance, in connection with the Bryant-Salamon metric on the spinor bundle over S^3. This space is foliated by six-dimensional hypersurfaces, each of which carries a particular type of SO(3)-structure; the intrinsic torsion is invariant under SO(3). The last condition is sufficient to imply local homogeneity of such geometries, and this allows us to give a classification. We close the circle by showing that the Bryant-Salamon metric is the unique complete metric with holonomy G_2 that arises from SO(3)-structures with invariant intrinsic torsion.

Harmonic structures and intrinsic torsion

We discuss the construction of Sp(2)Sp(1)-structures whose fundamental form is closed. In particular, we find 10 new examples of 8-dimensional nilmanifolds that admit an invariant closed 4-form with stabiliser Sp(2)Sp(1). Our constructions entail the notion of SO(4)-structures on 7-manifolds. We present a thorough investigation of the intrinsic torsion of such structures, leading to the construction of explicit Lie group examples with invariant intrinsic torsion.

Intrinsic torsion in quaternionic contact geometry

We investigate quaternionic contact (qc) manifolds from the point of view of intrinsic torsion. We argue that the natural structure group for this geometry is a non-compact Lie group K containing Sp(n)H^*, and show that any qc structure gives rise to a canonical K-structure with constant intrinsic torsion, except in seven dimensions, when this condition is equivalent to integrability in the sense of Duchemin. We prove that the choice of a reduction to Sp(n)H^* (or equivalently, a complement of the qc distribution) yields a unique K-connection satisfying natural conditions on torsion and curvature. We show that the choice of a compatible metric on the qc distribution determines a canonical reduction to Sp(n)Sp(1) and a canonical Sp(n)Sp(1)-connection whose curvature is almost entirely determined by its torsion. We show that its Ricci tensor, as well as the Ricci tensor of the Biquard connection, has an interpretation in terms of intrinsic torsion.

On seven dimensional quaternionic contact solvable Lie groups

We answer in the affirmative a question posed by Ivanov and Vassilev on the existence of a seven dimensional quaternionic contact manifold with closed fundamental 4-form and non-vanishing torsion endomorphism. Moreover, we show an approach to the classification of seven dimensional solvable Lie groups having an integrable left invariant quaternionic contact structure. In particular, we prove that the unique seven dimensional nilpotent Lie group admitting such a structure is the quaternionic Heisenberg group.

The odd side of torsion geometry

We introduce and study a notion of `Sasaki with torsion structure' (ST) as an odd-dimensional analogue of Kähler with torsion geometry (KT). These are normal almost contact metric manifolds that admit a unique compatible connection with 3-form torsion. Any odd-dimensional compact Lie group is shown to admit such a structure; in this case the structure is left-invariant and has closed torsion form. We illustrate the relation between ST structures and other generalizations of Sasaki geometry, and explain how some standard constructions in Sasaki geometry can be adapted to this setting. In particular, we relate the ST structure to a KT structure on the space of leaves, and show that both the cylinder and the cone over an ST manifold are KT, although only the cylinder behaves well with respect to closedness of the torsion form. Finally, we introduce a notion of `G-moment map'. We provide criteria based on equivariant cohomology ensuring the existence of these maps, and then apply them as a tool for reducing ST structures.

Nilmanifolds with a calibrated G_2-structure

We introduce obstructions to the existence of a calibrated G_2-structure on a Lie algebra g of dimension seven, not necessarily nilpotent. In particular, we prove that if there is a Lie algebra epimorphism from g to a six-dimensional Lie algebra h with kernel contained in the center of g, then h has a symplectic form. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of the nilpotent Lie algebras that admit a calibrated G_2-structure.

SU(3)-holonomy metrics from nilpotent Lie groups

One way of producing explicit Riemannian 6-manifolds with holonomy SU(3) is by integrating a flow of SU(2)-structures on a 5-manifold, called the hypo evolution flow. In this paper we classify invariant hypo SU(2)-structures on nilpotent 5-dimensional Lie groups. We characterize the hypo evolution flow in terms of gauge transformations, and study the flow induced on the variety of frames on a Lie algebra taken up to automorphisms. We classify the orbits of this flow for all hypo nilpotent structures, obtaining several families of cohomogeneity one metrics with holonomy contained in SU(3). We prove that these metrics cannot be extended to a complete metric, unless they are flat.

Calabi-Yau cones from contact reduction

We consider a generalization of Einstein-Sasaki manifolds, which we characterize in terms both of spinors and differential forms, that in the real analytic case corresponds to contact manifolds whose symplectic cone is Calabi-Yau. We construct solvable examples in seven dimensions. Then, we consider circle actions that preserve the structure, and determine conditions for the contact reduction to carry an induced structure of the same type. We apply this construction to obtain a new hypo-contact structure on S^2\times T^3.

Solvable Lie algebras are not that hypo

We study a type of left-invariant structure on Lie groups, or equivalently on Lie algebras. We introduce obstructions to the existence of a hypo structure, namely the 5-dimensional geometry of hypersurfaces in manifolds with holonomy SU(3). The choice of a splitting g^*=V_1 + V_2, and the vanishing of certain associated cohomology groups, determine a first obstruction. We also construct necessary conditions for the existence of a hypo structure with a fixed almost-contact form. For non-unimodular Lie algebras, we derive an obstruction to the existence of a hypo structure, with no choice involved. We apply these methods to classify solvable Lie algebras that admit a hypo structure.

Embedding into manifolds with torsion

We introduce a class of special geometries associated to the choice of a differential graded algebra contained in ΛR^n. We generalize some known embedding results, that effectively characterize the real analytic Riemannian manifolds that can be realized as submanifolds of a Riemannian manifold with special holonomy, to this more general context. In particular, we consider the case of hypersurfaces inside nearly-Kaehler and alpha-Einstein-Sasaki manifolds, proving that the corresponding evolution equations always admit a solution in the real analytic case.
