Dynamical conductivity of the Fermi arc and the Volkov-Pankratov states on the surface of Weyl semimetals

Weyl semimetals are known to host massless surface states called Fermi arcs. These Fermi arcs are the manifestation of the bulk-edge correspondence in topological matter and thus are analogous to the topological chiral surface states of topological insulators. It has been shown that the latter, depending on the smoothness of the surface, host massive Volkov-Pankratov(VP) states that coexist with the chiral ones. Here, we investigate these VP states in the framework of Weyl semimetals, namely their density of states and magneto-optical response. We find the selection rules corresponding to optical transitions which lead to anisotropic responses to external fields. In the presence of a magnetic field parallel to the interface, the selection rules and hence the poles of the response functions are mixed.

Higher Dimensional Limit Cycles and Coupling Induced Synchronization in Dynamical Systems

Limit cycles (attractors for neighbouring periodic orbits in a dissipative dynamical system) have been widely studied but the corresponding generalization for quasi periodic orbits have rarely been discussed. Here we investigate "higher dimensional limit cycles" by analysing a pair of coupled non identical Van der Pol oscillators and also the Kuznetsov oscillator. We find that the renormalization group based approach introduced by Chen, Goldenfeld and Oono is ideally suited for analysing the quasi periodic analogues of limit cycles. We also address entrainment issues in a pair of forced and coupled Van der Pol oscillators. Our principle finding there is that if two such independent oscillators one with frequency entrainment and the other without are coupled linearly, then it is possible to produce an entrained state via the coupling.

Chiral nodes and oscillations in the Josephson current in Weyl semimetals

The separation of the Weyl nodes in a broken time-reversal symmetric Weyl semimetal leads to helical quasi-particle excitations at the Weyl nodes, which, when coupled with overall spin conservation allows only inter-nodal transport at the junction of the Weyl semimetal with a superconductor. This leads to an unusual periodic oscillation in the Josephson current as a function of $k_0L$, where $L$ is the length of the Weyl semimetal and $2k_0$ is the inter-nodal distance. This oscillation is robust and should be experimentally measurable, providing a direct path to confirming the existence of chiral nodes in the Weyl semimetal.
