Chiral plasma instability and inverse cascade from nonequilibrium left-handed neutrinos in core-collapse supernovae

We show that the backreaction of left-handed neutrinos out of equilibrium on the matter sector induces an electric current proportional to a magnetic field even without a chiral imbalance for electrons in core-collapse supernovae. We derive the transport coefficient of this effect based on the recently formulated chiral radiation transport theory for neutrinos. This chiral electric current generates a strong magnetic field via the so-called chiral plasma instability, which could provide a new mechanism for the strong and stable magnetic field of magnetars. We also numerically study the physical origin of the inverse cascade of the magnetic energy in the magnetohydrodynamics including this current. Our results indicate that incorporating the chiral effects of neutrinos would drastically modify the hydrodynamic evolutions of supernovae, which may also be relevant to the explosion dynamics.

Hydrodynamic helicity polarization in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We study helicity polarization through the (3+1) dimensional relativistic viscous hydrodynamic models at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$GeV Au+Au collisions. Similar to the local spin polarization, we consider the helicity polarization beyond global equilibrium and investigate the contributions induced by thermal vorticity, shear viscous tensor, and the fluid acceleration. We find that the local helicity polarization induced by thermal vorticity dominates over other contributions. It also implies that in the low-energy collisions, the the fluid vorticity as part of thermal vorticity may play the crucial role to the total helicity polarization. Such a finding could be useful for probing the local strength of vorticity in rotational quark gluon plasmas by measuring helicity polarization. Our simulation confirms the strict space reversal symmetry, whereas we also compare our numerical results with approximated relations derived from ideal Bjorken flow. Our studies also provide a baseline for the future investigation on local parity violation through the correlations of helicity polarization.

Photonic spin Hall effect from quantum kinetic theory in curved spacetime

Based on quantum field theory, we formulate the Wigner function and quantum kinetic theory for polarized photons in curved spacetimes which admit a covariantly constant timelike vector. From this framework, the photonic chiral/zilch vortical effects are reproduced in a rigidly rotating coordinate. In a spatially inhomogeneous coordinate, we derive the spin Hall effect for the photon helicity current and energy current in equilibrium. Our derivation reveals that such photonic Hall effect are related to the photonic vortical effect via the Lorentz invariance and their transport coefficients match each other.

Quantum kinetic theory for dynamical spin polarization from QED-type interaction

We investigate the dynamical spin polarization of a massless electron probing an electron plasma in locally thermal equilibrium via the Moller scattering from the quantum kinetic theory. We derive an axial kinetic equation delineating the dynamical spin evolution in the presence of the collision term with quantum corrections up to $\mathcal{O}(\hbar)$ and the leading-logarithmic order in coupling by using the hard-thermal-loop (HTL) approximation, from which we extract the spin-polarization rate induced by the spacetime gradients of the medium. When the electron probe approaches local equilibrium, we further simplify the collision term into a relaxation-time expression. Our kinetic equation may be implemented in the future numerical simulations for dynamical spin polarization.

Quantum kinetic theory for spin transport of quarks with background chromo-electromagnetic fields

We derive the quantum kinetic equations for massive and massless quarks coupled with the background chromo-electromagnetic fields from the Wigner-function approach with the $\hbar$ expansion and effective power-counting scheme. For each case, one obtains coupled color-singlet and color-octet kinetic equations, which also involve the scalar and axial-vector components for the charge and spin transport. These kinetic equations delineate entangled evolution of the corresponding distribution functions decomposed in color space. At weak coupling, we derive the close form of the color-singlet kinetic equations for spin transport, which incorporates the diffusion term and the source term that triggers dynamical spin polarization led by correlation functions of color fields. Also, the non-dynamical source term is found in the axial Wigner function. The induced spin polarization and axial charge currents by these source terms are discussed under physical assumptions for color-field correlators in near-equilibrium quark gluon plasmas. In the constant-field limit, we further obtain non-vanishing axial Ward identities, from which we extract the pseudo-scalar condensate for massive quarks at finite temperature.

Spin alignment from turbulent color fields

We study the important, yet widely overlooked, role of gluons for spin transport with a connection to local parity violation in quark gluon plasmas. We extend the newly developed quantum kinetic theory for relativistic fermions to the case coupled with non-Abelian chromo-electromagnetic fields and employ this formalism to investigate the spin polarization of quarks under dynamically generated color fields in near-equilibrium quark gluon plasmas. It is found that the spin polarization could be induced by parity-odd correlators of color fields, which may dominate over collisional effects at weak coupling. Our result provides with a possible explanation for the spin alignment of vector mesons measured in high-energy nuclear collisions and alludes to the connection with local parity violation.

Wigner functions and quantum kinetic theory of polarized photons

We derive the Wigner functions of polarized photons in the Coulomb gauge with the $\hbar$ expansion applied to quantum field theory, and identify side-jump effects for massless photons. We also discuss the photonic chiral vortical effect for the Chern-Simons current and zilch vortical effect for the zilch current in local thermal equilibrium as a consistency check for our formalism. The results are found to be in agreement with those obtained from different approaches. Moreover, using the real-time formalism, we construct the quantum kinetic theory (QKT) for polarized photons. By further adopting a specific power counting scheme for the distribution functions, we provide a more succinct form of an effective QKT. This photonic QKT involves quantum corrections associated with self-energy gradients in the collision term, which are analogous to the side-jump corrections pertinent to spin-orbit interactions in the chiral kinetic theory for massless fermions. The same theoretical framework can also be directly applied to weakly coupled gluons in the absence of background color fields.

Chiral Radiation Transport Theory of Neutrinos

We construct the chiral radiation transport equation for left-handed neutrinos in the context of radiation hydrodynamics for core-collapse supernovae. Based on the chiral kinetic theory incorporating quantum corrections due to the chirality of fermions, we derive a general relativistic form of the chiral transfer equation with collisions. We show that such quantum corrections explicitly break the spherical symmetry and axisymmetry of the system. In the inertial frame, in particular, we find that the so-called side jump leads to quantum corrections in the collisions between neutrinos and matter. We also derive analytic forms of such corrections in the emission and absorption rates for the neutrino absorption process. These corrections result in the generation of kinetic helicity and cross helicity of matter, which should then modify the subsequent evolution of matter. This theoretical framework can be applied to investigate the impacts of the chirality of neutrinos on the evolution of core-collapse supernovae.

Effective quantum kinetic theory for spin transport of fermions with collsional effects

We systematically derive the collision term for the axial kinetic theory, a quantum kinetic theory delineating the coupled dynamics of the vector/axial charges and spin transport carried by the massive spin-1/2 fermions traversing a medium. We employ the Wigner-function approach and propose a consistent power-counting scheme where the axial-charge distribution function, a non-conserved quantity for massive particles, is accounted as the first-order quantity in the $ \hbar $ expansion, while the vector-charge distribution function the zeroth-order quantity. This specific power-counting scheme allows us to organize a reduced $ \hbar$ expansion for the collision term and to formally identity the spin-diffusion effect and the spin-polarization effect at the same order. We confirm that the obtained collisional axial kinetic theory smoothly reduces to the chiral kinetic theory in the massless limit, serving as a consistency check. In the absence of electromagnetic fields, we further present the simplified axial kinetic equations suitable for tracking dynamical spin polarization of heavy and light fermions, respectively. As an application to the weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma at high temperature, we compute the spin-diffusion term for massive quarks within the leading-log approximation. The formal expression for the first-order terms provides a path toward evaluation of the spin polarization effect in quantum chromodynamics.

Signatures of the vortical quark-gluon plasma in hadron yields

We investigate the hadron production from the vortical quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions. Based on the quark-coalescence and statistical hadronization models, we show that total hadron yields summed over the spin components are enhanced by the local vorticity with quadratic dependence. The enhancement factor amounts to be a few percent and may be detectable within current experimental sensitivities. We also show that the effect is stronger for hadrons with larger spin, and thus propose a new signature of the local vorticity, which may be detected by the yield ratio of distinct hadron species having different spins such as $ϕ$ and $η'$. The vorticity dependence of hadron yields seems robust, with consistent predictions in both of the hadron production mechanisms for reasonable values of the vorticity strength estimated for heavy-ion collisions.

Analytic Solutions of Transverse Magneto-hydrodynamics under Bjorken Expansion

We review the recent developments of analytic solutions in transverse magneto-hydrodynamics under Bjorken expansion. It is found that the time dependence of magnetic fields can either increase or reduce the energy density depending on the decay exponent of magnetic fields. Moreover, perturbative solutions under weak magnetic fields with spatial inhomogeneity results in transverse flow, where the directions of flow also depend on the decay exponent of magnetic fields in time.

Holographic Photon Production and Anisotropic Flow

The thermal-photon emission from strongly coupled gauge theories at finite temperature via the bottom-up models in holographic QCD in the deconfined phase is studied. The models are constructed to approximately reproduce the electric conductivity obtained from lattice simulations for the quark gluon plasma (QGP). The emission rates are then embedded in hydrodynamic simulations combined with prompt photons and hadronic contributions to analyze the spectra and anisotropic flow of direct photons in RHIC and LHC. In general, the holographic models enhance the yield and improve the agreement in spectra, while they reduce the flow in low $p_T$ and increase it in high $p_T$.

Shear Viscosities of Photons in Strongly Coupled Plasmas

We investigate the shear viscosity of thermalized photons in the quark gluon plasma (QGP) at weak coupling and $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills plasma (SYMP) at both strong and weak couplings. We find that the shear viscosity due to the photon-parton scattering up to the leading order of electromagnetic coupling is suppressed when the coupling of the QGP/SYMP is increased, which stems from the blue-shift of the thermal-photon spectrum at strong coupling. In addition, the shear viscosity rapidly increases near the deconfinement transition in a phenomenological model analogous to the QGP.

Transverse flow induced by inhomogeneous magnetic fields in the Bjorken expansion

We investigate the magnetohydrodynamics in the presence of an external magnetic field following the power-law decay in proper time and having spatial inhomogeneity characterized by a Gaussian distribution in one of transverse coordinates under the Bjorken expansion. The leading-order solution is obtained in the weak-field approximation, where both energy density and fluid velocity are modified. It is found that the spatial gradient of the magnetic field results in transverse flow, where the flow direction depends on the decay exponents of the magnetic field. We suggest that such a magnetic-field-induced effect might influence anisotropic flow in heavy ion collisions.

A non-boost-invariant solution of relativistic hydrodynamics in 1+3 dimensions

We present a new solution of relativistic hydrodynamics in 1+3 dimensions which depends on both the transverse coordinate and rapidity. At early times the flow expands dominantly longitudinally in a non-boost-invariant manner, and at late times it expands nearly spherically. These two regimes are shown to be related by symmetry. The effect of viscosity is also discussed.

Viscous Leptons in the Quark Gluon Plasma

We investigate the shear viscosity of leptons in a strongly coupled quark gluon plasma (QGP). We find that the shear viscosity due to the lepton-quark scattering is inversely proportional to the ratio of electric conductivity of the QGP to temperature up to the leading logarithmic order of the electromagnetic coupling. The finding implies that the thermal leptons form a more viscous fluid than the quarks by a large ratio. Using the known result for the electrical conductivity of strongly coupled plasmas obtained from gauge/gravity duality, we find that the lepton shear viscosity is suppressed compared with the one from lepton-lepton scattering. Consistently, we find an enhancement of the energy loss of hard leptons in a strongly coupled scenario compared with that in a weakly coupled plasma.

Chiral Hall Effect and Chiral Electric Waves

We investigate the vector and axial currents induced by external electromagnetic fields and chemical potentials in chiral systems at finite temperature. Similar to the normal Hall effect, we find that an axial Hall current is generated in the presence of the electromagnetic fields along with an axial chemical potential, which may be dubbed as the "chiral Hall effect"(CHE). The CHE is related to the interactions of chiral fermions and exists with the a nonzero axial chemical potential. We argue that the CHE could lead to nontrivial charge distributions at different rapidity in asymmetric heavy ion collisions. Moreover, we study the chiral electric waves(CEW) led by the fluctuations of the vector and axial chemical potentials along with the chiral electric separation effect(CESE), where a density wave propagates along the applied electric field. Combining with the normal/chiral Hall effects, the fluctuations of chemical potentials thus result in Hall density waves. The Hall density waves may survive even at zero chemical potentials and become non-dissipative. We further study the transport coefficients including the Hall conductivities, damping times, wave velocities, and diffusion constants of CEW in a strongly coupled plasma via the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Elliptic flow from thermal photons with magnetic field in holography

We compute the elliptic flow $v_2$ of thermal photons in a strongly coupled plasma with constant magnetic field via gauge/gravity duality. The D3/D7 embedding is applied to generate the contributions from massive quarks. By considering the cases in 2+1 flavor SYM analogous to the photon production in QGP, we obtain the thermal-photon $v_2$, which is qualitatively consistent with the direct-photon $v_2$ measured in RHIC at intermediate energy. However, due to the simplified setup, the thermal-photon $v_2$ in our model should be regarded as the upper bound for the $v_2$ generated by solely magnetic field in the strongly coupled scenario.

Holographic Chiral Electric Separation Effect

We investigate the chiral electric separation effect, where an axial current is induced by an electric field in the presence of both vector and axial chemical potentials, in a strongly coupled plasma via the Sakai-Sugimoto model with an $U(1)_R\times U(1)_L$ symmetry. By introducing different chemical potentials in $U(1)_R$ and $U(1)_L$ sectors, we compute the axial direct current (DC) conductivity stemming from the chiral current and the normal DC conductivity. We find that the axial conductivity is approximately proportional to the product of the axial and vector chemical potentials for arbitrary magnitudes of the chemical potentials. We also evaluate the axial alternating current (AC) conductivity induced by a frequency-dependent electric field, where the oscillatory behavior with respect to the frequency is observed.

Jet Quenching and Holographic Thermalization with a Chemical Potential

We investigate jet quenching of virtual gluons and thermalization of a strongly-coupled plasma with a non-zero chemical potential via the gauge/gravity duality. By tracking a charged shell falling in an asymptotic AdS$_{d+1}$ background for $d=3$ and $d=4$, which is characterized by the AdS-Reissner-Nordström-Vaidya (AdS-RN-Vaidya) geometry, we extract a thermalization time of the medium with a non-zero chemical potential. In addition, we study the falling string as the holographic dual of a virtual gluon in the AdS-RN-Vaidya spacetime. The stopping distance of the massless particle representing the tip of the falling string in such a spacetime could reveal the jet quenching of an energetic light probe traversing the medium in the presence of a chemical potential. We find that the stopping distance decreases when the chemical potential is increased in both AdS-RN and AdS-RN-Vaidya spacetimes, which correspond to the thermalized and thermalizing media respectively. Moreover, we find that the soft gluon with an energy comparable to the thermalization temperature and chemical potential in the medium travels further in the non-equilibrium plasma. The thermalization time obtained here by tracking a falling charged shell does not exhibit, generically, the same qualitative features as the one obtained studying non-local observables. This indicates that --holographically-- the definition of thermalization time is observer dependent and there is no unambiguos definition.

Holographic Photon Production with Magnetic Field in Anisotropic Plasmas

We investigate the thermal photon production from constant magnetic field in a strongly coupled and anisotropic plasma via the gauge/gravity duality. The dual geometry with pressure anisotropy is generated from the axion-dilaton gravity action introduced by Mateos and Trancancelli and the magnetic field is coupled to fundamental matters(quarks) through the D3/D7 embeddings. We find that the photon spectra with different quark mass are enhanced at large frequency when the photons are emitted parallel to the anisotropic direction with larger pressure or perpendicular to the magnetic field. However, in the opposite conditions for the emitted directions, the spectra approximately saturate isotropic results in the absence of magnetic field. On the other hand, a resonance emerges at moderate frequency for the photon spectrum with heavy quarks when the photons move perpendicular to the magnetic field. The resonance is more robust when the photons are polarized along the magnetic field. On the contrary, in the presence of pressure anisotropy, the resonance will be suppressed. There exist competing effects of magnetic field and pressure anisotropy on meson melting in the strongly coupled super Yang-Mills plasma, while we argue that the suppression led by anisotropy may not be applied to the quark gluon plasma.

Light Probes in a Strongly Coupled Anisotropic Plasma

We employ the gauge/gravity duality to study the jet quenching of light probes traversing a static yet anisotropic strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills plasma. We compute the stopping distance of an image jet induced by a massless source field, which is characterized by a massless particle falling along the null geodesic in the WKB approximation, in an anisotropic dual geometry introduced by Mateos and Trancancelli. At mid and large anisotropic regimes, the stopping distances of a probe traveling in the anisotropic plasma along various orientations are suppressed compared to those in an isotropic plasma especially along the longitudinal direction at equal temperature. However, when fixing the entropy density, the anisotropic values of stopping distances near the transverse directions slightly surpass the isotropic values. In general, the jet quenching of light probes is increased by the anisotropic effect in a strongly coupled and equilibrium plasma.

Production of Prompt Photons and Dileptons in Rapid Holographic Thermalization

We study the lightlike and timelike R-current correlators in the AdS-Vaidya spacetime, which are associated with the production of prompt photons and dileptons from a nonequilibrium, rapidly thermalizing, and strongly coupled plasma in the AdS/CFT correspondence. In particular, we focus on the photon production. We find that the amplitude of the photon-emission spectrum increases during the thermalization of the medium. Also, the time-dependent emission rate for hard photons has an oscillatory pattern and thermalizes faster than soft photons.

$J/ψ$ Production by Magnetic Excitation of $η_c$

We compute the probability of $J/ψ$ production from the interaction between $η_c$ and the strong magnetic field generated in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The computation is first carried out in the heavy quark effective model, in which the M1 radiative transition is considered. Then we investigate the transition in the framework of non-relativistic heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory and show that the polarization of $J/ψ$ produced by this process is parallel to the direction of magnetic field and thus perpendicular to the reaction plane. The transition probability obtained in both approaches is of order $2\times 10^{-4}$.

On the Role of Charmed Meson Loops in Charmonium Decays

We investigate the effect of intermediate charmed meson loops on the M1 radiative decays $J/ψ\to η_c γ$ and $ψ'\rightarrowη^{(\prime)}_cγ$ as well as the isospin violating hadronic decays $ψ'\rightarrow J/ψ\,π^0(η)$ using heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory (HH$χ$PT). The calculations include tree level as well as one loop diagrams and are compared to the latest data from CLEO and BES-III. Our fit constrains the couplings of 1S and 2S charmonium multiplets to charmed mesons, denoted $g_2$ and $g_2^\prime$, respectively. We find that there are two sets of solutions for $g_2$ and $g_2^\prime$. One set, which agrees with previous values of the product $g_2 g_2^\prime$ extracted from analyses that consider only loop contributions to $ψ'\rightarrow J/ψ\,π^0(η)$, can only fit data on radiative decays with fine-tuned cancellations between tree level diagrams and loops in that process. The other solution for $g_2$ and $g_2^\prime$ leads to couplings that are smaller by a factor of 2.3. In this case tree level and loop contributions are of comparable size and the numerical values of the tree level contributions to radiative decays are consistent with estimates based on the quark model as well as non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD). This result shows that tree level HH$χ$PT couplings are as important as the one loop graphs with charmed mesons in these charmonium decays. The couplings $g_2$ and $g_2^\prime$ are also important for the calculations of the decays of charmed meson bound states, such as the X(3872), to conventional charmonia.
