Experimental observation of Berreman modes in uniaxial anisotropic nanoporous alumina film on aluminium substrate

In this article, we demonstrate experimentally and verified numerically the excitation of Berreman modes that propagate in a dielectric film of uniaxial anisotropic nanoporous alumina grown on an aluminium substrate. It is an air-dielectric-metal asymmetric polaritonic system with a real part of the effective permittivity having a value near zero. The modes are excited at a wavelength lower than the epsilon near zero wavelength region. Minimum reflection is observed for the mid-infrared p-polarized light, while maximum reflection is observed for the s-polarized light. The experimental results are numerically reproduced for both p- and s-polarized light and confirm the Berreman modes excitation in the system. At the exciting wavelength, the field is confined in the dielectric region near the air-dielectric interface. The reported system is straightforward and could be easily fabricated over a large scale and is helpful in a variety of mid-infrared applications such as thermal management systems, sensors, passive radiative cooling devices, non-linear applications, and terahertz frequency generation.

Nanoporous alumina microtubes for metamaterial and plasmonic applications

Double anodization of aluminium microwires in an acid bath yields cylindrical nanoporous alumina with nonbranching radially emanating pores. The obtained nanoporous alumina is a cylindrically anisotropic as well as a radially inhomogeneous optical medium. Detailed structural characterization reveals that the nanopore diameter varies linearly with the radius of the aluminium microwire along the radial direction. Microcracks form on the alumina shell during the anodization when sufficient thickness is formed due to volume expansion and stress accumulation. The formation of the microcracks can be monitored by the anodization current which shows sudden jumps when the cracks are formed. After removing the remaining aluminium at the core of the anodised wire the anisotropic and inhomogeneous alumina microtube is obtained. Such nanoporous alumina microtubes form unique optical waveguides and are useful for microscale heat transfer applications.

Photothermal properties of stable aggregates of gold nanorods

Aggregation of the nanoparticles is a natural phenomena due to various biological and physical parameters but these aggregates are highly unstable. If aggregates would have been stable then it might be useful for some biomedical applications. To study the optical properties and photothermal heat generation of stable aggregates of the metal nanopartilces, we present a forced synthesis of aggregates of small gold nanorods in a mixture of Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) and Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA). We synthesised hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) coated gold nanorods and then prepared the stable aggregates to study the optical characteristics of these aggregates. Absorption spectra of aggregates show the redshift compared to the monodispersive gold nanorods and confirm that the shape and size of aggregate depend on the amount of BSA in DMEM as well as on the concentration of CTAB in the stock solution of the gold nanorods suspension. The higher concentration of the BSA in DMEM and lower concentration of CTAB of monodispersive gold nanorod suspension causes greater redshift. We tuned the well defined plasmonic absorption resonance peaks of the aggregates of gold nanorods up to the second biological therapeutic window. We studied the stability of the synthesised aggregates of gold nanorods for up to one week and found that the aggregates were stable for atleast one week. A photothermal study of these aggregates was also carried out using high power broadband near-infrared light source. Aggregates were also photothermally stable which warrants their repeated use for such applications. The photothermal conversion efficiency of the these stable gold nanorod aggregates were higher than its monodispersive form of the nanorods.
