Metric embeddings of Laakso graphs into Banach spaces

Let $X$ be Banach space which is not super-reflexive. Then, for each $n\ge1$ and $\varepsilon>0$, we exhibit metric embeddings of the Laakso graph $\mathcal{L}_n$ into $X$ with distortion less than $2+\varepsilon$ and into $L_1[0,1]$ with distortion $4/3$. The distortion of an embedding of $\mathcal{L}_2$ (respectively, the diamond graph $D_2$) into $L_1[0,1]$ is at least $9/8$ (respectively, $5/4$).

A dichotomy for subsymmetric basic sequences with applications to Garling spaces

Our aim in this article is to contribute to the study of the structure of subsymmetric basic sequences in Banach spaces (even, more generally, in quasi-Banach spaces). For that we introduce the notion of positioning and develop new tools which lead to a dichotomy theorem that holds for general spaces with subsymmetric bases. As an illustration of how to use this dichotomy theorem we obtain the classification of all subsymmetric sequences in certain types of spaces. To be more specific, we show that Garling sequence spaces have a unique symmetric basic sequence but no symmetric basis and that these spaces have a continuum of subsymmetric basic sequences.

Nondentable Sets in Banach Spaces

In his study of the Radon Nikodým property of Banach spaces, Bourgain showed (among other things) that in any closed, bounded, convex set $A$ that is nondentable, one can find a separated, weakly closed bush. In this note, we prove a generalization of Bourgain's result: in any bounded, nondentable set $A$ (not necessarily closed or convex) one can find a separated, weakly closed approximate bush. Similarly, we obtain as corollaries the existence of $A$-valued quasimartingales with sharply divergent behavior.

Equivalent norms with the property $(β)$ of Rolewicz

We extend to the non separable setting many characterizations of the Banach spaces admitting an equivalent norm with the property $(β)$ of Rolewicz. These characterizations involve in particular the Szlenk index and asymptotically uniformly smooth or convex norms. This allows to extend easily to the non separable case some recent results from the non linear geometry of Banach spaces.

Stability of low-rank matrix recovery and its connections to Banach space geometry

There are well-known relationships between compressed sensing and the geometry of the finite-dimensional $\ell_p$ spaces. A result of Kashin and Temlyakov can be described as a characterization of the stability of the recovery of sparse vectors via $\ell_1$-minimization in terms of the Gelfand widths of certain identity mappings between finite-dimensional $\ell_1$ and $\ell_2$ spaces, whereas a more recent result of Foucart, Pajor, Rauhut and Ullrich proves an analogous relationship even for $\ell_p$ spaces with $p < 1$. In this paper we prove what we call matrix or noncommutative versions of these results: we characterize the stability of low-rank matrix recovery via Schatten $p$-(quasi-)norm minimization in terms of the Gelfand widths of certain identity mappings between finite-dimensional Schatten $p$-spaces.

The transfer of property $(β)$ of Rolewicz by a uniform quotient map

We provide a Laakso construction to prove that the property of having an equivalent norm with the property $(β)$ of Rolewicz is qualitatively preserved via surjective uniform quotient mappings between separable Banach spaces. On the other hand, we show that the $(β)$-modulus is not quantitatively preserved via such a map by exhibiting two uniformly homeomorphic Banach spaces that do not have $(β)$-moduli of the same power-type even under renorming.

Asymptotic geometry of Banach spaces and uniform quotient maps

Recently, Lima and Randrianarivony pointed out the role of the property $(β)$ of Rolewicz in nonlinear quotient problems, and answered a ten-year-old question of Bates, Johnson, Lindenstrauss, Preiss and Schechtman. In the present paper, we prove that the modulus of asymptotic uniform smoothness of the range space of a uniform quotient map can be compared with the modulus of $(β)$ of the domain space. We also provide conditions under which this comparison can be improved.

Isomorphisms and strictly singular operators in mixed Tsirelson spaces

We study the family of isomorphisms and strictly singular operators in mixed Tsirelson spaces and their modified versions setting. We show sequential minimality of modified mixed Tsirelson spaces $T_M[(\mc{S}_n,θ_n)]$ satisfying some regularity conditions and present results on existence of strictly singular non-compact operators on subspaces of mixed Tsirelson spaces defined by the families $(\mc{A}_n)_n$ and $(\mc{S}_n)_n$.

Modified mixed Tsirelson spaces

We study the modified and boundedly modified mixed Tsirelson spaces $T_M[({\cal F}_{k_n},θ_n)_{n=1}^{\infty }]$ and $T_{M(s)}[({\cal F}_{k_n},θ_n)_{n=1}^{\infty }]$ respectively, defined by a subsequence $({\cal F}_{k_n})$ of the sequence of Schreier families $({\cal F}_n)$. These are reflexive asymptotic $\ell_1$ spaces with an unconditio- nal basis $(e_i)_i$ having the property that every sequence $\{ x_i\}_{i=1}^n$ of normalized disjointly supported vectors contained in $\langle e_i\rangle_{i=n}^{\infty }$ is equivalent to the basis of $\ell_1^n$. We show that if $\limθ_n^{1/n}=1$ then the space $T[({\cal F}_n,θ_n) _{n=1}^{\infty }]$ and its modified variations are totally incomparable by proving that $c_0$ is finitely disjointly representable in every block subspace of $T[({\cal F}_n, θ_n)_{n=1}^{\infty }]$. Next, we present an example of a boundedly modified mixed Tsirelson space $X_{M(1),u}$ which is arbitrarily distortable. Finally, we construct a variation of the space $X_{M(1),u}$ which is hereditarily indecomposable.
