Microscopic evidence for anisotropic multigap superconductivity in the CsV3_3Sb5_5 kagome superconductor

The recently discovered kagome superconductor CsV3_3Sb5_5 (Tc≃2.5T_c \simeq 2.5 K) has been found to host charge order as well as a non-trivial band topology, encompassing multiple Dirac points and probable surface states. Such a complex and phenomenologically rich system is, therefore, an ideal playground for observing unusual electronic phases. Here, we report on microscopic studies of its anisotropic superconducting properties by means of transverse-field muon spin rotation (μμSR) experiments. The temperature dependences of the in-plane and out-of-plane components of the magnetic penetration depth λab−2(T)λ_{ab}^{-2}(T) and λc−2(T)λ_{c}^{-2}(T) indicate that the superconducting order parameter exhibits a two-gap (s+ss+s)-wave symmetry, reflecting the multiple Fermi surfaces of CsV3Sb5. The multiband nature of its superconductivity is further validated by the different temperature dependences of the anisotropic magnetic penetration depth γλ(T)γ_λ(T) and upper critical field γBc2(T)γ_{\rm B_{c2}}(T), both in close analogy with the well known two-gap superconductor MgB2_2. Remarkably, the high value of the Tc/λ−2(0)T_c/λ^{-2}(0) ratio in both field orientations strongly suggests the unconventional nature of superconductivity. The relaxation rates obtained from zero field μμSR experiments do not show noticeable change across the superconducting transition, indicating that superconductivity does not break time reversal symmetry.

Two types of charge order in the superconducting kagome material CsV3_3Sb5_5

The kagome metals of the family AAV3_3Sb5_5, featuring a unique structural motif, harbor an array of intriguing phenomena such as chiral charge order and superconductivity. CsV3_3Sb5_5 is of particular interest because it displays a double superconducting dome in the region of the temperature-pressure phase diagram where charge order is still present. However, the microscopic origin of such an unusual behavior remains an unsolved issue. Here, to address it, we combine high-pressure, low-temperature muon spin relaxation with first-principles calculations. We observe a pressure-induced threefold enhancement of the superfluid density, which also displays a double peak feature, similar to the superconducting critical temperature. This leads to three distinct regions in the phase diagram, each of which features distinct slopes of the linear relation between superfluid density and the critical temperature. These results are attributed to a possible evolution of the charge order pattern from the superimposed tri-hexagonal Star-of-David phase at low pressures (within the first dome) to the staggered tri-hexagonal phase at intermediate pressures (between the first and second domes). Our findings suggest a change in the nature of the charge ordered state across the phase diagram of CsV3_3Sb5_5, with varying degrees of competition with superconductivity.

Unconventional pressure dependence of the superfluid density in the nodeless topological superconductor αα-PdBi2_2

We investigated the superconducting properties of the topological superconductor αα--PdBi2_2 at ambient and external pressures up to 1.77~GPa using muon spin rotation (μμSR) experiments. The ambient pressure measurements evince a fully gapped ss-wave superconducting state in the bulk of the specimen. AC magnetic susceptibility and μμSR measurements manifest a continuous suppression of TcT_{\rm c} with increasing pressure. In parallel, we observed a significant decrease of superfluid density by ∼\sim20\% upon application of external pressure. Remarkably, the superfluid density follows linear relation with TcT_{\rm c} which was found before in some unconventional topological superconductors and hole doped cuprates. This finding signals a possible crossover from BEC to BCS in αα--PdBi2_2.

Multiple-gap response of type-I noncentrosymmetric BeAu superconductor

Precise measurements of the thermodynamic critical field (BcB_{\rm c}) in type-I noncentrosymmetric superconductor BeAu were performed by means of the muon-spin rotation/relaxation technique. The temperature evolution of BcB_{\rm c} can not be described within the single gap scenario and it requires the presence of at least two different types of the superconducting order parameters. The self-consistent two-gap approach, adapted for analysis of Bc(T)B_{\rm c}(T) behavior, suggests the presence of two superconducing energy gaps with the gap to TcT_{\rm c} ratios 2Δ/kBTc≃4.522Δ/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}\simeq4.52 and ≃2.37\simeq2.37 for the big and the small gap, respectively. This implies that the superconductivity in BeAu is unconventional and that the supercarrier pairing occurs at various energy bands.

Penetration depth and gap structure in the antiperovskite oxide superconductor Sr3−x_{3-x}SnO revealed by μμSR

We report a μμSR study on the antiperovskite oxide superconductor Sr3−x_{3-x}SnO. With transverse-field μμSR, we observed the increase of the muon relaxation rate upon cooling below the superconducting transition temperature Tc=5.4T_{\mathrm{c}}=5.4 K, evidencing bulk superconductivity. The exponential temperature dependence of the relaxation rate σσ at low temperatures suggests a fully gapped superconducting state. We evaluated the zero-temperature penetration depth λ(0)∝1/σ(0)λ(0)\propto1/\sqrt{σ(0)} to be around 320-1020 nm. Such a large value is consistent with the picture of a doped Dirac semimetal. Moreover, we revealed that the ratio Tc/λ(0)−2T_{\mathrm{c}}/λ(0)^{-2} is larger than those of ordinary superconductors and is comparable to those of unconventional superconductors. The relatively high TcT_{\mathrm{c}} for small carrier density may hint at an unconventional pairing mechanism beyond the ordinary phonon-mediated pairing. In addition, zero-field μμSR did not provide evidence of broken time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. These features are consistent with the theoretically proposed topological superconducting state in Sr3−x_{3-x}SnO, as well as with ss-wave superconductivity.

Split superconducting and time-reversal symmetry-breaking transitions, and magnetic order in Sr2_2RuO4_4 under uniaxial stress

Among unconventional superconductors, Sr2_2RuO4_4 has become a benchmark for experimentation and theoretical analysis because its normal-state electronic structure is known with exceptional precision, and because of experimental evidence that its superconductivity has, very unusually, a spontaneous angular momentum, i.e. a chiral state. This hypothesis of chirality is however difficult to reconcile with recent evidence on the spin part of the order parameter. Measurements under uniaxial stress offer an ideal way to test for chirality, because under uniaxial stress the superconducting and chiral transitions are predicted to split, allowing the empirical signatures of each to be identified separately. Here, we report zerofield muon spin relaxation (ZF-μμSR) measurements on crystals placed under uniaxial stresses of up to 1.05 GPa. We report a clear stress-induced splitting between the onset temperatures of superconductivity and time-reversal symmetry breaking, consistent with qualitative expectations for chiral superconductivity. We also report the appearance of unexpected bulk magnetic order under a uniaxial stress of ~ 1.0 GPa in clean Sr2_2RuO4_4.

The single- vs. two-gap scenario: the specific heat and the thermodynamic critical field of BeAu superconductor

The puzzling situation where some thermodynamic quantities require a single-gap description, while others need a more complex gap scenario, is discussed. Our approach reveals that in some cases, the conclusions based on measurements of only one thermodynamic quantity may lead to conflicting results. As an example, temperature evolutions of the electronic specific heat [Ce(T)C_{\rm e}(T)] and the thermodynamic critical field [Bc(T)B_{\rm c}(T)] of BeAu superconductor were reconsidered within the framework of the single-gap and the two-gap scenarios. The analysis shows that the single-gap approach describes the temperature dependencies of Ce(T)C_{\rm e}(T) and the superfluid density ρs(T)ρ_{\rm s}(T) satisfactorily. However it fails in the case of Bc(T)B_{\rm c}(T). The self-consistent two-gap model, in contrast, is able to describe all of the mentioned thermodynamic quantities by using a similar set of parameters. Our results reveal that a proper description of the thermodynamic quantities, related to the superconducting pairing mechanism, requires the use of similar model containing the same set of parameters.

Iridium 5d\textit{d}-electron driven superconductivity in ThIr3_3

Polycrystalline sample of superconducting ThIr3_{3} was obtained by arc-melting Th and Ir metals. Powder x-ray diffraction revealed that the compound crystalizes in a rhombohedral crystal structure (R-3m, s.g. no. 166) with the lattice parameters: a = 5.3394(1) A˚Å and c = 26.4228(8) A˚Å. Normal and superconducting states were studied by magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity measurements. The results showed that ThIr3_{3} is a type II superconductor (Ginzburg-Landau parameter κκ = 38) with the critical temperature Tc_{c} = 4.41 K. The heat capacity data yielded the Sommerfeld coefficient γγ = 17.6 mJ mol−1^{-1} K−2^{-2} and the Debye temperature ΘDΘ_{D} = 169 K. The ratio ΔΔC / (γγ Tc_{c}) = 1.6, where ΔΔC stands for the specific heat jump at Tc_{c}, and the electron-phonon coupling constant λe−pλ_{e-p} = 0.74 suggest that ThIr3_{3} is a moderate-strength superconductor. The experimental studies were supplemented by band structure calculations, which indicated that the superconductivity in ThIr3_{3} is governed mainly by 5d states of iridium. The significantly smaller band-structure value of Sommerfeld coefficient as well as the experimentally observed quadratic temperature dependence of resistivity and enhanced magnetic susceptibility suggest presence of electronic interactions in the system, which compete with superconductivity.

Valence fuctuation and magnetic ordering in EuNi2(P1-xGex)2 single crystals

Unusual phases and phase transitions are seen at the magnetic-nonmagnetic boundary in Ce, Eu and Yb-based compounds. EuNi2_2P2_{2} is a very unusual valence fluctuating Eu system, because at low temperatures the Eu valence stays close to 2.5 instead of approaching an integer value. Eu valence and thus the magnetic property in this system can be tuned by Ge substitution in P site as EuNi2_2Ge2_{2} is known to exhibit antiferromagnetc (AFM) ordering of divalent Eu moments with TNT_N = 30 K. We have grown EuNi2_2(P1−x_{1-x}Gex_x)2_2 (0.0 ≤\leq xx ≤\leq 0.5) single crystals and studied their magnetic, thermodynamic and transport properties. Increasing Ge doping to x>x > 0.4 results in a well-defined AFM ordered state with TNT_N = 12 K for xx = 0.5. Moreover, the reduced value of magnetic entropy for xx = 0.5 at TNT_N suggests the presence of valance fluctuation/ Kondo effect in this compound. Interestingly, the specific heat exhibits an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient upon Ge doping. Subsequently, electronic structure calculations lead to a non-integral valence in EuNi2_2P2_{2} but a stable divalent Eu state in EuNi2_2Ge2_{2} which is in good agreement with experimental results.

Heavy fermion and Kondo lattice behavior in the itinerant ferromagnet CeCrGe3

Physical properties of polycrystalline CeCrGe3_{3} and LaCrGe3_{3} have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility χ(T)χ(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), electrical resistivity ρ(T)ρ(T), specific heat C(TT) and thermoelectric power S(TT) measurements. These compounds are found to crystallize in the hexagonal perovskite structure (space group \textit{P63_{3}/mmc}), as previously reported. The ρ(T)ρ(T), χ(T)χ(T) and C(TT) data confirm the bulk ferromagnetic ordering of itinerant Cr moments in LaCrGe3_{3} and CeCrGe3_{3} with TCT_{C} = 90 K and 70 K respectively. In addition a weak anomaly is also observed near 3 K in the C(TT) data of CeCrGe3_{3}. The T dependences of ρρ and finite values of Sommerfeld coefficient γγ obtained from the specific heat measurements confirm that both the compounds are of metallic character. Further, the TT dependence of ρρ of CeCrGe3_{3} reflects a Kondo lattice behavior. An enhanced γγ of 130 mJ/mol\,K2^{2} together with the Kondo lattice behavior inferred from the ρ(T)ρ(T) establish CeCrGe3_{3} as a moderate heavy fermion compound with a quasi-particle mass renormalization factor of ∼\sim 45.

Reentrant Superconductivity in Eu(Fe1-xIrx)2As2

The interplay between superconductivity and Eu2+^{2+} magnetic ordering in Eu(Fe1−x_{1-x}Irx_{x})2_{2}As2_{2} is studied by means of electrical transport and magnetic measurements. For the critically doped sample Eu(Fe0.86_{0.86}Ir0.14_{0.14})2_{2}As2_{2}, we witnessed two distinct transitions : a superconducting transition below 22.6 K which is followed by a resistivity reentrance caused by the ordering of the Eu2+^{2+} moments. Further, the low field magnetization measurements show a prominent diamagnetic signal due to superconductivity which is remarkable in presence of a large moment magnetically ordered system. The electronic structure for a 12.5% Ir doped EuFe1.75_{1.75}Ir0.25_{0.25}As2_{2} is investigated along with the parent compound EuFe2_{2}As2_{2}. As compared to EuFe2_{2}As2_{2}, the doped compound has effectively lower value of density of states throughout the energy scale with more extended bandwidth and stronger hybridization involving Ir. Shifting of Fermi energy and change in band filling in EuFe1.75_{1.75}Ir0.25_{0.25}As2_{2} with respect to the pure compound indicate electron doping in the system.
