The LBNL Superfacility Project Report

The Superfacility model is designed to leverage HPC for experimental science. It is more than simply a model of connected experiment, network, and HPC facilities; it encompasses the full ecosystem of infrastructure, software, tools, and expertise needed to make connected facilities easy to use. The three-year Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Superfacility project was initiated in 2019 to coordinate work being performed at LBNL to support this model, and to provide a coherent and comprehensive set of science requirements to drive existing and new work. A key component of the project was the in-depth engagements with eight science teams that represent challenging use cases across the DOE Office of Science. By the close of the project, we met our project goal by enabling our science application engagements to demonstrate automated pipelines that analyze data from remote facilities at large scale, without routine human intervention. In several cases, we have gone beyond demonstrations and now provide production-level services. To achieve this goal, the Superfacility team developed tools, infrastructure, and policies for near-real-time computing support, dynamic high-performance networking, data management and movement tools, API-driven automation, HPC-scale notebooks via Jupyter, authentication using Federated Identity and container-based edge services supported. The lessons we learned during this project provide a valuable model for future large, complex, cross-disciplinary collaborations. There is a pressing need for a coherent computing infrastructure across national facilities, and LBNL's Superfacility project is a unique model for success in tackling the challenges that will be faced in hardware, software, policies, and services across multiple science domains.

Ambitwistor Strings and the Scattering Equations on AdS$_3\times$S$^3$

We construct an ambitwistor string that describes Type II supergravity on AdS$_3\times$S$^3$ with pure NS flux. The background Einstein equations ensure that the model is anomaly free. The spectrum consists of supergravity fluctuations around this background, with no higher string states. This theory transforms the problem of computing $n$-point tree-level amplitudes on AdS$_3$ into that of understanding an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ Gaudin integrable system, whose representations are determined by the dual boundary operators and whose spectral parameters correspond to the worldsheet insertion points. The scattering equations take a similar form to flat space, with $n(n-3)/2$ parameters $τ_{ij}$ parametrizing the eigenvalues of the Gaudin model.

Gauge Theory and Boundary Integrability II: Elliptic and Trigonometric Case

We consider the mixed topological-holomorphic Chern-Simons theory introduced by Costello, Yamazaki and Witten on a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold. We use this to construct semi-classical solutions of the boundary Yang-Baxter equation in the elliptic and trigonometric cases. A novel feature of the trigonometric case is that the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ action lifts to the gauge bundle in a $z$-dependent way. We construct several examples of $K$-matrices, and check they agree with cases appearing in the literature.

Twistor methods for AdS$_5$

We consider the application of twistor theory to five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. The twistor space of AdS$_5$ is the same as the ambitwistor space of the four-dimensional conformal boundary; the geometry of this correspondence is reviewed for both the bulk and boundary. A Penrose transform allows us to describe free bulk fields, with or without mass, in terms of data on twistor space. Explicit representatives for the bulk-to-boundary propagators of scalars and spinors are constructed, along with twistor action functionals for the free theories. Evaluating these twistor actions on bulk-to-boundary propagators is shown to produce the correct two-point functions.

A Worldsheet Theory for Supergravity

We present a worldsheet theory that describes maps into a curved target space equipped with a B-field and dilaton. The conditions for the theory to be consistent at the quantum level can be computed exactly, and are that the target space fields obey the nonlinear d=10 supergravity equations of motion, with no higher curvature terms. The path integral is constrained to obey a generalization of the scattering equations to curved space. Remarkably, the supergravity field equations emerge as quantum corrections to these curved space scattering equations.

On tree amplitudes of supersymmetric Einstein-Yang-Mills theory

We present a new formula for all single trace tree amplitudes in four dimensional super Yang-Mills coupled to Einstein supergravity. Like the Cachazo-He-Yuan formula, our expression is supported on solutions of the scattering equations, but with momenta written in terms of spinor helicity variables. Supersymmetry and parity are both manifest. In the pure gravity and pure Yang-Mills sectors, it reduces to the known twistor-string formulae. We show that the formula behaves correctly under factorization and sketch how these amplitudes may be obtained from a four-dimensional (ambi)twistor string.

Standing Together for Reproducibility in Large-Scale Computing: Report on reproducibility@XSEDE

This is the final report on reproducibility@xsede, a one-day workshop held in conjunction with XSEDE14, the annual conference of the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE). The workshop's discussion-oriented agenda focused on reproducibility in large-scale computational research. Two important themes capture the spirit of the workshop submissions and discussions: (1) organizational stakeholders, especially supercomputer centers, are in a unique position to promote, enable, and support reproducible research; and (2) individual researchers should conduct each experiment as though someone will replicate that experiment. Participants documented numerous issues, questions, technologies, practices, and potentially promising initiatives emerging from the discussion, but also highlighted four areas of particular interest to XSEDE: (1) documentation and training that promotes reproducible research; (2) system-level tools that provide build- and run-time information at the level of the individual job; (3) the need to model best practices in research collaborations involving XSEDE staff; and (4) continued work on gateways and related technologies. In addition, an intriguing question emerged from the day's interactions: would there be value in establishing an annual award for excellence in reproducible research?

Ambitwistor strings and the scattering equations at one loop

Ambitwistor strings are chiral, infinite tension analogues of conventional string theory whose target space is the space of complex null geodesics and whose spectrum consists exclusively of massless states. At genus zero, these strings underpin the Cachazo-He-Yuan formulae for tree level scattering of gravitons, gluons and scalars. In this paper we extend these formulae in a number of directions. Firstly, we consider Ramond sector vertex operators and construct simple amplitudes involving space-time fermions. These agree with tree amplitudes in ten dimensional supergravity and super Yang--Mills. We then show that, after the usual GSO projections, the ambitwistor string partition function is modular invariant. We consider the scattering equations at genus one, and calculate one loop scattering amplitudes for NS-NS external states in the Type II ambitwistor string. We conjecture that these give new representations of (the integrand of) one loop supergravity amplitudes and we show that they have the expected behaviour under factorization of the worldsheet in both non--separating and separating degenerations.

Gravity in Twistor Space and its Grassmannian Formulation

We prove the formula for the complete tree-level $S$-matrix of $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity recently conjectured by two of the authors. The proof proceeds by showing that the new formula satisfies the same BCFW recursion relations that physical amplitudes are known to satisfy, with the same initial conditions. As part of the proof, the behavior of the new formula under large BCFW deformations is studied. An unexpected bonus of the analysis is a very straightforward proof of the enigmatic $1/z^2$ behavior of gravity. In addition, we provide a description of gravity amplitudes as a multidimensional contour integral over a Grassmannian. The Grassmannian formulation has a very simple structure; in the N$^{k-2}$MHV sector the integrand is essentially the product of that of an MHV and an $\overline{\rm MHV}$ amplitude, with $k+1$ and $n-k-1$ particles respectively.

Perturbative gravity at null infinity

We describe a theory that lives on the null conformal boundary of asymptotically flat space-time, and whose states encode the radiative modes of (super)gravity. We study the induced action of the BMS group, verifying that the Ward identity for certain BMS supertranslations is equivalent to Weinberg's soft graviton theorem in the bulk. The subleading behaviour of soft gravitons may also be obtained from a Ward identity for certain superrotation generators in the extended BMS algebra proposed by Barnich & Troessaert. We show that the theory computes the complete classical gravitational S-matrix, perturbatively around the Minkowski vacuum.

Ambitwistor strings and the scattering equations

We show that string theories admit chiral infinite tension analogues in which only the massless parts of the spectrum survive. Geometrically they describe holomorphic maps to spaces of complex null geodesics, known as ambitwistor spaces. They have the standard critical space--time dimensions of string theory (26 in the bosonic case and 10 for the superstring). Quantization leads to the formulae for tree--level scattering amplitudes of massless particles found recently by Cachazo, He and Yuan. These representations localize the vertex operators to solutions of the same equations found by Gross and Mende to govern the behaviour of strings in the limit of high energy, fixed angle scattering. Here, localization to the scattering equations emerges naturally as a consequence of working on ambitwistor space. The worldsheet theory suggests a way to extend these amplitudes to spinor fields and to loop level. We argue that this family of string theories is a natural extension of the existing twistor string theories.

Twistor Strings for N=8 Supergravity

This paper presents a worldsheet theory describing holomorphic maps to twistor space with N fermionic directions. The theory is anomaly free when N=8. Via the Penrose transform, the vertex operators correspond to an N=8 Einstein supergravity multiplet. In the first instance, the theory describes gauged supergravity in AdS_4. Upon taking the flat space, ungauged limit, the complete classical S-matrix is recovered from worldsheet correlation functions.

Gravity from Rational Curves

This paper presents a new formula which is conjectured to yield all tree amplitudes in N=8 supergravity. The amplitudes are described in terms of higher degree rational maps to twistor space. The resulting expression has manifest N=8 supersymmetry and is manifestly permutation symmetric in all external states. It depends monomially on the infinity twistor that explicitly breaks conformal symmetry to Poincare. The formula has been explicitly checked to yield the correct amplitudes for the 3-point MHV-bar and for the n-point MHV, where it reduces to an expression of Hodges. We have also carried out numerical checks of the formula at NMHV and NNMHV level, for up to eight external states.

A Proof of the Supersymmetric Correlation Function / Wilson Loop Correspondence

We prove that in the limit when its insertion points become pairwise null-separated, the ratio of certain n-point correlation functions in N=4 SYM is equal to a supersymmetric Wilson loop on twistor space, acting in the adjoint representation. In the planar limit, each of these objects reduces to the square of the complete n-particle planar superamplitude. Our proof is at the level of the integrand.

Descent equations for superamplitudes

At loop level in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills, the dual superconformal symmetry of tree amplitudes is lost. This is true even if one uses a supersymmetry preserving regulator, and even for finite quantities that remain dual conformally invariant. We examine this breaking from the dual point of view of the super Wilson Loop, tracing it to the difference between supersymmetries of the self-dual and of the full theories. We show that the anomaly is controlled by a descent equation that determines the derivative of an L-loop amplitude in terms of a single non-trivial integral of an (L-1)-loop amplitude. We propose that this equation can be used recursively to construct multi-loop amplitudes in a way that makes their transcendentality manifest.

Holomorphic Linking, Loop Equations and Scattering Amplitudes in Twistor Space

We study a complex analogue of a Wilson Loop, defined over a complex curve, in non-Abelian holomorphic Chern-Simons theory. We obtain a version of the Makeenko-Migdal loop equation describing how the expectation value of these Wilson Loops varies as one moves around in a holomorphic family of curves. We use this to prove (at the level of the integrand) the duality between the twistor Wilson Loop and the all-loop planar S-matrix of N=4 super Yang-Mills by showing that, for a particular family of curves corresponding to piecewise null polygons in space-time, the loop equation reduce to the all-loop extension of the BCFW recursion relations. The scattering amplitude may be interpreted in terms of holomorphic linking of the curve in twistor space, while the BCFW relations themselves are revealed as a holomorphic analogue of skein relations.

Making QCD Lattice Data Accessible and Organized through Advanced Web Interfaces

The Gauge Connection at qcd.nersc.gov is one of the most popular repositories of QCD lattice ensembles. It is used to access 16TB of archived QCD data from the High Performance Storage System (HPSS) at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). Here, we present a new web interface for qcd.nersc.gov which allows physicists to browse and search the data, as well as download individual files or entire ensembles in batch. Our system distinguishes itself from others because of its ease of use and web based workflow.

Scattering Amplitudes and Wilson Loops in Twistor Space

This article reviews the recent progress in twistor approaches to Wilson loops, amplitudes and their duality for N=4 super Yang-Mills. Wilson loops and amplitudes are derived from first principles using the twistor action for maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We start by deriving the MHV rules for gauge theory amplitudes from the twistor action in an axial gauge in twistor space, and show that this gives rise to the original momentum space version given by Cachazo, Svrcek and Witten. We then go on to obtain from these the construction of the momentum twistor space loop integrand using (planar) MHV rules and show how it arises as the expectation value of a holomorphic Wilson loop in twistor space. We explain the connection between the holomorphic Wilson loop and certain light-cone limits of correlation functions. We give a brief review of other ideas in connection with amplitudes in twistor space: twistor-strings, recursion in twistor space, the Grassmannian residue formula for leading singularities and amplitudes as polytopes. This article is an invited review for a special issue of Journal of Physics A devoted to `Scattering Amplitudes in Gauge Theories'.

A Direct Proof of BCFW Recursion for Twistor-Strings

This paper gives a direct proof that the leading trace part of the genus zero twistor-string path integral obeys the BCFW recursion relation. This is the first complete proof that the twistor-string correctly computes all tree amplitudes in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The recursion has a beautiful geometric interpretation in twistor space that closely reflects the structure of BCFW recursion in momentum space, both on the one hand as a relation purely among tree amplitudes with shifted external momenta, and on the other as a relation between tree amplitudes and leading singularities of higher loop amplitudes. The proof works purely at the level of the string path integral and is intimately related to the recursive structure of boundary divisors in the moduli space of stable maps to CP^3.

Amplitudes at Weak Coupling as Polytopes in AdS_5

We show that one-loop scalar box functions can be interpreted as volumes of geodesic tetrahedra embedded in a copy of AdS_5 that has dual conformal space-time as boundary. When the tetrahedron is space-like, it lies in a totally geodesic hyperbolic three-space inside AdS_5, with its four vertices on the boundary. It is a classical result that the volume of such a tetrahedron is given by the Bloch-Wigner dilogarithm and this agrees with the standard physics formulae for such box functions. The combinations of box functions that arise in the n-particle one-loop MHV amplitude in N=4 super Yang-Mills correspond to the volume of a three-dimensional polytope without boundary, all of whose vertices are attached to a null polygon (which in other formulations is interpreted as a Wilson loop) at infinity.

MHV Diagrams in Momentum Twistor Space

We show that there are remarkable simplifications when the MHV diagram formalism for N=4 super Yang-Mills is reformulated in momentum twistor space. The vertices are replaced by unity while each propagator becomes a dual superconformal `R-invariant' whose arguments may be read off from the diagram. The momentum twistor MHV rules generate a formula for the full, all-loop planar integrand of the super Yang-Mills S-matrix that is manifestly dual superconformally invariant up to the choice of a reference twistor. We give a general proof of this reformulation and illustrate its use by computing the momentum twistor NMHV and NNMHV tree amplitudes and the integrands of the MHV and NMHV 1-loop and the MHV 2-loop planar amplitudes.

The Complete Planar S-matrix of N=4 SYM as a Wilson Loop in Twistor Space

We propose that the complete planar S-matrix of N=4 super Yang-Mills - including all N^kMHV partial amplitudes to all loops - is equivalent to the correlation function of a supersymmetric Wilson loop in twistor space. Remarkably, the entire classical S-matrix arises from evaluating the correlation function in the self-dual sector, while the expansion of the correlation function in powers of the Yang-Mills coupling constant provides the loop expansion of the amplitudes. We support our proposal with explicit computations of the n particle NMHV and NNMHV trees, the integrands of the 1-loop MHV and NMHV amplitudes, and the n particle 2-loop MHV amplitude. These calculations are performed using the twistor action in axial gauge. In this gauge, the Feynman diagrams of the correlation function are the planar duals of the usual MHV diagrams for the scattering amplitude. The results are presented in the form of a sum of products of dual superconformal invariants in (momentum) twistor space, and agree with the expressions derived in arXiv:1009.1854 directly from the MHV rules. The twistor space Wilson loop is a natural supersymmetric generalization of the standard Wilson loop used to compute MHV amplitudes. We show how the Penrose-Ward transform can be used to determine a corresponding supersymmetrization on space-time.

Gravity, Twistors and the MHV Formalism

We give a self-contained derivation of the MHV amplitudes for gravity and use the associated twistor generating function to define a twistor action for the MHV diagram approach to gravity. Starting from a background field calculation on a spacetime with anti self-dual curvature, we obtain a simple spacetime formula for the scattering of a single, positive helicity linearized graviton into one of negative helicity. Re-expressing our integral in terms of twistor data allows us to consider a spacetime that is asymptotic to a superposition of plane waves. Expanding these out perturbatively yields the gravitational MHV amplitudes of Berends, Giele & Kuijf. We go on to take the twistor generating function off-shell at the perturbative level. Combining this with a twistor action for the anti self-dual background, we obtain a twistor action for the MHV diagram approach to perturbative gravity. We finish by extending these results to supergravity, in particular N=4 and N=8.

Scattering Amplitudes and BCFW Recursion in Twistor Space

Twistor ideas have led to a number of recent advances in our understanding of scattering amplitudes. Much of this work has been indirect, determining the twistor space support of scattering amplitudes by examining the amplitudes in momentum space. In this paper, we construct the actual twistor scattering amplitudes themselves. We show that the recursion relations of Britto, Cachazo, Feng and Witten have a natural twistor formulation that, together with the three-point seed amplitudes, allows us to recursively construct general tree amplitudes in twistor space. We obtain explicit formulae for $n$-particle MHV and NMHV super-amplitudes, their CPT conjugates (whose representations are distinct in our chiral framework), and the eight particle N^2MHV super-amplitude. We also give simple closed form formulae for the N=8 supergravity recursion and the MHV and conjugate MHV amplitudes. This gives a formulation of scattering amplitudes in maximally supersymmetric theories in which superconformal symmetry and its breaking is manifest. For N^kMHV, the amplitudes are given by 2n-4 integrals in the form of Hilbert transforms of a product of $n-k-2$ purely geometric, superconformally invariant twistor delta functions, dressed by certain sign operators. These sign operators subtly violate conformal invariance, even for tree-level amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills, and we trace their origin to a topological property of split signature space-time. We develop the twistor transform to relate our work to the ambidextrous twistor diagram approach of Hodges and of Arkani-Hamed, Cachazo, Cheung and Kaplan.

preprint2009arXiv

Twistor-Strings, Grassmannians and Leading Singularities

We derive a systematic procedure for obtaining an explicit, L-loop leading singularities of planar N=4 super Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes in twistor space directly from their momentum space channel diagrams. The expressions are given as integrals over the moduli of connected, nodal curves in twistor space whose degree and genus matches expectations from twistor-string theory. We propose that a twistor-string theory for pure N=4 super Yang-Mills, if it exists, is determined by the condition that these leading singularity formulae arise as residues when an unphysical contour for the path integral is used, by analogy with the momentum space leading singularity conjecture. We go on to show that the genus g twistor-string moduli space for g-loop N^{k-2}MHV amplitudes may be mapped into the Grassmannian G(k,n). Restricting to a leading singularity, the image of this map is a 2(n-2)-dimensional subcycle of G(k,n) of exactly the type found from the Grassmannian residue formula of Arkani-Hamed, Cachazo, Cheung and Kaplan. Based on this correspondence and the Grassmannian conjecture, we deduce restrictions on the possible leading singularities of multi-loop N^pMHV amplitudes. In particular, we argue that no new leading singularities can arise beyond 3p loops.

Supersymmetric Gauge Theories in Twistor Space

We construct a twistor space action for N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and show that it is equivalent to its four dimensional spacetime counterpart at the level of perturbation theory. We compare our partition function to the original twistor-string proposal, showing that although our theory is closely related to string theory, it is free from conformal supergravity. We also provide twistor actions for gauge theories with N<4 supersymmetry, and show how matter multiplets may be coupled to the gauge sector.

Brane-World Inflation and the Transition to Standard Cosmology

In the context of a five-dimensional brane-world model motivated from heterotic M-theory, we develop a framework for potential-driven brane-world inflation. Specifically this involves a classification of the various background solutions of (A)dS_5 type, an analysis of five-dimensional slow-roll conditions and a study of how a transition to the flat vacuum state can be realized. It is shown that solutions with bulk potential and both bane potentials positive exist but are always non-separating and have a non-static orbifold. It turns out that, for this class of backgrounds, a transition to the flat vacuum state during inflation is effectively prevented by the rapidly expanding orbifold. We demonstrate that such a transition can be realized for solutions where one boundary potential is negative. For this case, we present two concrete inflationary models which exhibit the transition explicitly.
