Optimality of the quantified Ingham-Karamata theorem for operator semigroups with general resolvent growth

We prove that a general version of the quantified Ingham-Karamata theorem for $C_0$-semigroups is sharp under mild conditions on the resolvent growth, thus generalising the results contained in a recent paper by the same authors. It follows in particular that the well-known Batty-Duyckaerts theorem is optimal even for bounded $C_0$-semigroups whose generator has subpolynomial resolvent growth. Our proof is based on an elegant application of the open mapping theorem, which we complement by a crucial technical lemma allowing us to strengthen our earlier results.

Optimal energy decay for the wave-heat system on a rectangular domain

We study the rate of energy decay for solutions of a coupled wave-heat system on a rectangular domain. Using techniques from the theory of $C_0$-semigroups, and in particular a well-known result due to Borichev and Tomilov, we prove that the energy of classical solutions decays like $t^{-2/3}$ as $t\to\infty$. This rate is moreover shown to be sharp. Our result implies in particular that a general estimate in the literature, which predicts at least logarithmic decay and is known to be best possible in general, is suboptimal in the special case under consideration here. Our strategy of proof involves direct estimates based on separation of variables and a refined version of the technique developed in our earlier paper for a one-dimensional wave-heat system.

A Katznelson-Tzafriri theorem for measures

This article generalises the well-known Katznelson-Tzafriri theorem for a $C_0$-semigroup $T$ on a Banach space $X$, by removing the assumption that a certain measure in the original result be absolutely continuous. In an important special case the rate of decay is quantified in terms of the growth of the resolvent of the generator of $T$. These results are closely related to ones obtained recently in the Hilbert space setting by Batty, Chill and Tomilov in [6]. The main new idea is to incorporate an assumption on the non-analytic growth bound $ζ(T)$ which is equivalent to the assumption made in [6] if $X$ is a Hilbert space.
