Higher Hida theory and p-adic L-functions for GSp(4)

We use the "higher Hida theory" recently introduced by the second author to p-adically interpolate periods of non-holomorphic automorphic forms for GSp(4), contributing to coherent cohomology of Siegel threefolds in positive degrees. We apply this new method to construct p-adic L-functions associated to the degree 4 (spin) L-function of automorphic representations of GSp(4), and the degree 8 L-function of GSp(4) x GL(2).

P-adic Asai L-functions of Bianchi modular forms

The Asai (or twisted tensor) $L$-function of a Bianchi modular form $Ψ$ is the $L$-function attached to the tensor induction to $\mathbb{Q}$ of its associated Galois representation. In this paper, when $Ψ$ is ordinary at $p$ we construct a $p$-adic analogue of this $L$-function: that is, a $p$-adic measure on $\mathbb{Z}_p^\times$ that interpolates the critical values of the Asai $L$-function twisted by Dirichlet characters of $p$-power conductor. The construction uses techniques analogous to those used by Lei, Zerbes and the first author in order to construct an Euler system attached to the Asai representation of a quadratic Hilbert modular form.

Spherical varieties and norm relations in Iwasawa theory

Norm-compatible families of cohomology classes for Shimura varieties, and other arithmetic symmetric spaces, play an important role in Iwasawa theory of automorphic forms. The aim of this note is to give a systematic approach to proving "vertical" norm-compatibility relations for such classes (where the level varies at a fixed prime p), treating the case of Betti and étale cohomology at once, and revealing an unexpected relation to the theory of spherical varieties. This machinery can be used to construct many new examples of norm-compatible families, potentially giving rise to new constructions of both Euler systems and p-adic L-functions: examples include families of algebraic cycles on Shimura varieties for U(n) x U(n+1) and U(2n) over the p-adic anticyclotomic tower.

Euler systems with local conditions

Euler systems are certain compatible families of cohomology classes, which play a key role in studying the arithmetic of Galois representations. We briefly survey the known Euler systems, and recall a standard conjecture of Perrin-Riou predicting what kind of Euler system one should expect for a general Galois representation. Surprisingly, several recent constructions of Euler systems do not seem to fit the predictions of this conjecture, and we formulate a more general conjecture which explains these extra objects. The novel aspect of our conjecture is that it predicts that there should often be Euler systems of several different ranks associated to a given Galois representation, and we describe how we expect these objects to be related.

Non-paritious Hilbert modular forms

The arithmetic of Hilbert modular forms has been extensively studied under the assumption that the forms concerned are "paritious" -- all the components of the weight are congruent modulo 2. In contrast, non-paritious Hilbert modular forms have been relatively little studied, both from a theoretical and a computational standpoint. In this article, we aim to redress the balance somewhat by studying the arithmetic of non-paritious Hilbert modular eigenforms. On the theoretical side, our starting point is a theorem of Patrikis, which associates projective l-adic Galois representations to these forms. We show that a general conjecture of Buzzard and Gee actually predicts that a strengthening of Patrikis' result should hold, giving Galois representations into certain groups intermediate between GL(2) and PGL(2), and we verify that the predicted Galois representations do indeed exist. On the computational side, we give an algorithm to compute non-paritious Hilbert modular forms using definite quaternion algebras. To our knowledge, this is the first time such a general method has been presented. We end the article with a selection of examples.

Rankin--Eisenstein classes for modular forms

In this paper we make a systematic study of certain motivic cohomology classes ("Rankin-Eisenstein classes") attached to the Rankin--Selberg convolution of two modular forms of weight $\ge 2$. The main result is the computation of the $p$-adic syntomic regulators of these classes. As a consequence we prove many cases of the Perrin-Riou conjecture for Rankin--Selberg convolutions of cusp forms.

Syntomic regulators of Asai--Flach classes

In this paper, we derive a formula for the p-adic syntomic regulators of Asai--Flach classes. These are cohomology classes forming an Euler system associated to a Hilbert modular form over a quadratic field, introduced in an earlier paper (arXiv:1607.07813) by Antonio Lei and the first and third authors. The formula we develop here is expressed in terms of differential operators acting on overconvergent Hilbert modular forms; it is analogous to existing formulae for the regulators of Beilinson--Flach classes, but a novel feature is the appearance of a projection operator associated to a critical-slope Eisenstein series. We conclude the paper with numerical calculations giving strong evidence for the non-vanishing of these regulators in an explicit example.

Overconvergent algebraic automorphic forms

I present a general theory of overconvergent p-adic automorphic forms and eigenvarieties for connected reductive algebraic groups G whose real points are compact modulo centre, extending earlier constructions due to Buzzard, Chenevier and Yamagami for forms of GL(n). This leads to some new phenomena, including the appearance of intermediate spaces of "semi-classical" automorphic forms; this gives a hierarchy of interpolation spaces (eigenvarieties) interpolating classical automorphic forms satisfying different finite slope conditions (corresponding to a choice of parabolic subgroup of G at p). The construction of these spaces relies on methods of locally analytic representation theory, combined with the theory of compact operators on Banach modules.

Rankin-Selberg Euler systems and p-adic interpolation

We construct motivic cohomology classes attached to Rankin--Selberg convolutions of modular forms of weights $\ge 2$, show that these vary analytically in p-adic families, and relate their image under the p-adic regulator map to values of L-functions. As consequences, we prove new cases of Perrin-Riou's conjecture on motivic L-values; we prove finiteness results for Tate--Shafarevich groups for twists of elliptic curves by dihedral Artin characters; and we prove one inclusion in the Iwasawa main conjecture for a single modular form over an imaginary quadratic field.

Iwasawa theory and p-adic L-functions over $\mathbf{Z}_p^2$-extensions

In this paper, we define a two-variable analogue of Perrin-Riou's p-adic regulator map for the Iwasawa cohomology of a crystalline representation of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbf{Q}_p$, over a Galois extension of $\mathbf{Q}_p$ whose Galois group is an abelian p-adic Lie group of dimension 2. We use this regulator map to study p-adic representations of global Galois groups over certain abelian extensions of number fields whose localisation at the primes above p are extensions of the above type. In the example of the restriction to an imaginary quadratic field of the representation attached to a modular form, we formulate a conjecture on the existence of a "zeta element", whose image under the regulator map is a p-adic L-function. We show that this conjecture implies the known properties of the 2-variable p-adic L-functions constructed by Perrin-Riou and Kim.

P-adic integration on ray class groups and non-ordinary p-adic L-functions

We study the theory of finite-order p-adic functions and distributions on ray class groups of number fields, and apply this to the construction of (possibly unbounded) p-adic L-functions for automorphic forms on GL(2) which may be non-ordinary at the primes above p. As a consequence, we obtain a "plus-minus" decomposition of the p-adic L-functions of automorphic forms for GL(2) over an imaginary quadratic field with p split and Hecke eigenvalues 0 at the primes above p, confirming a conjecture of B.D. Kim.

Euler systems for Rankin--Selberg convolutions of modular forms

We construct an Euler system in the cohomology of the tensor product of the Galois representations attached to two modular forms, using elements in the higher Chow groups of products of modular curves. We use this Euler system to prove a finiteness theorem for the strict Selmer group of the Galois representation when the associated p-adic Rankin--Selberg L-function is non-vanishing at s = 1.

Local epsilon isomorphisms

In this paper, we prove the "local epsilon-isomorphism conjecture" of Fukaya and Kato for a particular class of Galois modules obtained by tensoring a Zp-lattice in a crystalline representation of the Galois group of Qp with a representation of an abelian quotient of the Galois group with values in a suitable p-adic local ring. This can be regarded as a local analogue of the Iwasawa main conjecture for abelian p-adic Lie extensions of Qp, extending earlier work of Benois and Berger for the cyclotomic extension. We show that such an epsilon-isomorphism can be constructed using the Perrin-Riou regulator map, or its extension to the 2-variable case due to the first and third authors.

Critical slope p-adic L-functions of CM modular forms

For ordinary modular forms, there are two constructions of a p-adic L-function attached to the non-unit root of the Hecke polynomial, which are conjectured but not known to coincide. We prove this conjecture for modular forms of CM type, by calculating the the critical-slope L-function arising from Kato's Euler system and comparing this with results of Bellaiche on the critical-slope L-function defined using overconvergent modular symbols.

Coleman maps and the p-adic regulator

This paper is a sequel to our earlier paper "Wach modules and Iwasawa theory for modular forms" (arXiv: 0912.1263), where we defined a family of Coleman maps for a crystalline representation of the Galois group of Qp with nonnegative Hodge-Tate weights. In this paper, we study these Coleman maps using Perrin-Riou's p-adic regulator L_V. Denote by H(Γ) the algebra of Qp-valued distributions on Γ= Gal(Qp(μ(p^\infty) / Qp). Our first result determines the H(Γ)-elementary divisors of the quotient of D_{cris}(V) \otimes H(Γ) by the H(Γ)-submodule generated by (ϕ* N(V))^{ψ= 0}, where N(V) is the Wach module of V. By comparing the determinant of this map with that of L_V (which can be computed via Perrin-Riou's explicit reciprocity law), we obtain a precise description of the images of the Coleman maps. In the case when V arises from a modular form, we get some stronger results about the integral Coleman maps, and we can remove many technical assumptions that were required in our previous work in order to reformulate Kato's main conjecture in terms of cotorsion Selmer groups and bounded p-adic L-functions.

Emerton's Jacquet functors for non-Borel parabolic subgroups

This paper studies Emerton's Jacquet module functor for locally analytic representations of p-adic reductive groups. When P is a parabolic subgroup whose Levi factor M is not commutative, we show that passing to an isotypical subspace for the derived subgroup of M gives rise to essentially admissible locally analytic representations of the torus Z(M), which have a natural interpretation in terms of rigid geometry. We use this to extend Emerton's representation-theoretic construction of eigenvarieties by constructing eigenvarieties interpolating automorphic representations whose local components at p are not necessarily principal series.

On the computation of local components of a newform

We present an algorithm for computing the $p$-component of the automorphic representation arising from a cuspidal newform $f$ for a prime $p$. This is equivalent to computing the restriction to the decomposition group at $p$ of the $\ell$-adic Galois representations attached to $f$ for any $\ell\neq p$. The situation is most interesting when $p^2$ divides the level of $f$, in which case the $p$-component could be supercuspidal. In the supercuspidal case, the local component is induced from an irreducible character of a compact-mod-center subgroup of $\text{GL}_2(\mathbf{Q}_p)$; our algorithm outputs both the group and the irreducible character. We provide examples which illustrate how the local Galois representation can be completely read off from the local component.

Wach modules and critical slope p-adic L-functions

We study Kato and Perrin-Riou's critical slope p-adic L-function attached to an ordinary modular form, using the methods of our earlier work with Lei. We show that it may be decomposed as a sum of two bounded measures multiplied by explicit distributions depending only on the local properties of the modular form at p. We use this decomposition to prove results on the zeros of the p-adic L-function, and we show that our results match the behaviour observed in examples calculated by Pollack and Stevens.

Explicit calculations of automorphic forms for definite unitary groups

I give an algorithm for computing the full space of automorphic forms for definite unitary groups over Q, and apply this to calculate the automorphic forms of level $G(Z-hat)$ and various small weights for an example of a rank 3 unitary group. This leads to some examples of various types of endoscopic lifting from automorphic forms for U_1 x U_1 x U_1 and U_1 x U_2, and to an example of a non-endoscopic form of weight (3,3) corresponding to a family of 3-dimensional irreducible l-adic Galois representations. I also compute the 2-adic slopes of some automorphic forms with level structure at 2, giving evidence for the local constancy of the slopes.
