A Generalization of the Chevalley-Warning and Ax-Katz Theorems with a View Towards Combinatorial Number Theory

We begin by explaining how arguments used by R. Wilson to give an elementary proof of the $\mathbb F_p$ case for the Ax-Katz Theorem can also be used to prove the following generalization of the Chevalley-Warning and Ax-Katz Theorems for $\mathbb F_p$, where we allow varying prime power moduli. Given any box $\mathcal B=\mathcal I_1\times\ldots\times\mathcal I_n$, with each $\mathcal I_j\subseteq\mathbb Z$ a complete system of residues modulo $p$, and a collection of nonzero polynomials $f_1,\ldots,f_s\in \mathbb Z[X_1,\ldots,X_n]$, then the set of common zeros inside the box, $$V=\{\mathbf a\in \mathcal B:\; f_1(\textbf a)\equiv 0\mod p^{m_1},\ldots,f_s(\textbf a)\equiv 0\mod p^{m_s}\},$$ satisfies $|V|\equiv 0\mod p^m$, provided $n>(m-1)\max_{i\in [1,s]}\Big\{p^{m_i-1}\mathsf{deg} f_i\Big\}+ \sum_{i=1}^{s}\frac{p^{m_i}-1}{p-1}\mathsf{deg} f_i.$ The introduction of the box $\mathcal B$ adds a degree of flexibility, in comparison to prior work of Zhi-Wei Sun. Indeed, incorporating the ideas of Sun, a weighted version of the above result is given. We continue by explaining how the added flexibility, combined with an appropriate use of Hensel's Lemma to choose the complete system of residues $\mathcal I_j$, effectively allows many combinatorial applications of the Chevalley-Warning and Ax-Katz Theorems, previously only valid for $\mathbb F_p^n$, to extend with bare minimal modification to validity for an arbitrary finite abelian $p$-group $G$. We illustrate this be giving several examples, including a new proof of the exact value of the Davenport Constant $\mathsf D(G)$ for finite abelian $p$-groups, a streamlined proof of the Kemnitz Conjecture, and the resolution of a problem of Xiaoyu He regarding zero-sums of length $k\exp(G)$ related to a conjecture of Kubertin.

Symmetric Kneser's Theorem with Trios and $3$-Transform

We give a new equivalent restatement and a new proof in terms of trios to the classical Kneser's theorem. In the finite case, our restatement takes the following, particularly symmetric shape: if $A$, $B$, and $C$ are subsets of a finite abelian group $G$ such that $A+B+C\ne G$, then, denoting by $H$ the period of the sumset $A+B+C$, we have $$ |A|+|B|+|C| \le |G|+|H|. $$ The proof is based on an extension of the familiar Dyson transform onto set systems containing three (or more) sets.

On products of k atoms II

Let $H$ be a Krull monoid with class group $G$ such that every class contains a prime divisor (for example, rings of integers in algebraic number fields or holomorphy rings in algebraic function fields). For $k \in \mathbb N$, let $\mathcal U_k (H)$ denote the set of all $m \in \mathbb N$ with the following property: There exist atoms $u_1, ..., u_k, v_1, ..., v_m \in H$ such that $u_1 \cdot ... \cdot u_k = v_1 \cdot ...\cdot v_m$. Furthermore, let $λ_k (H) = \min \mathcal U_k (H)$ and $ρ_k (H) = \sup \mathcal U_k (H)$. The sets $\mathcal U_k (H) \subset \mathbb N$ are intervals which are finite if and only if $G$ is finite. Their minima $λ_k (H)$ can be expressed in terms of $ρ_k (H)$. The invariants $ρ_k (H)$ depend only on the class group $G$, and in the present paper they are studied with new methods from Additive Combinatorics.

A semigroup-theoretical view of direct-sum decompositions and associated combinatorial problems

Let $R$ be a ring and let $\mathcal C$ be a small class of right $R$-modules which is closed under finite direct sums, direct summands, and isomorphisms. Let $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ denote a set of representatives of isomorphism classes in $\mathcal C$ and, for any module $M$ in $\mathcal C$, let $[M]$ denote the unique element in $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ isomorphic to $M$. Then $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ is a reduced commutative semigroup with operation defined by $[M] + [N] = [M \oplus N]$, and this semigroup carries all information about direct-sum decompositions of modules in $\mathcal C$. This semigroup-theoretical point of view has been prevalent in the theory of direct-sum decompositions since it was shown that if $\operatorname{End}_R (M)$ is semilocal for all $M\in \mathcal C$, then $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ is a Krull monoid. Suppose that the monoid $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ is Krull with a finitely generated class group (for example, when $\mathcal C$ is the class of finitely generated torsion-free modules and $R$ is a one-dimensional reduced Noetherian local ring). In this case we study the arithmetic of $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ using new methods from zero-sum theory. Furthermore, based on module-theoretic work of Lam, Levy, Robson, and others we study the algebraic and arithmetic structure of the monoid $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ for certain classes of modules over Prüfer rings and hereditary Noetherian prime rings.

On Three Sets with Nondecreasing Diameter

Let $[a,b]$ denote the integers between $a$ and $b$ inclusive and, for a finite subset $X \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$, let the diameter of $X$ be equal to $\max(X)-\min(X)$. We write $X<_p\,Y$ provided $\max(X)<\min(Y)$. For a positive integer $m$, let $f(m,m,m;2)$ be the least integer $N$ such that any $2$-coloring $Δ: [1, N]\rightarrow \{0,1\}$ has three monochromatic $m$-sets $B_1, B_2, B_3 \subseteq [1,N]$ (not necessarily of the same color) with $B_1<_p\, B_2 <_p\, B_3$ and $diam(B_1)\leq diam(B_2)\leq diam(B_3)$. Improving upon upper and lower bounds of Bialostocki, Erd\H os and Lefmann, we show that $f(m,m,m;2)=8m-5+\lfloor\frac{2m-2}{3}\rfloor+δ$ for $m\geq 2$, where $δ=1$ if $m\in \{2,5\}$ and $δ=0$ otherwise.

Arithmetic-Progression-Weighted Subsequence Sums

Let $G$ be an abelian group, let $S$ be a sequence of terms $s_1,s_2,...,s_{n}\in G$ not all contained in a coset of a proper subgroup of $G$, and let $W$ be a sequence of $n$ consecutive integers. Let $$W\odot S=\{w_1s_1+...+w_ns_n:\;w_i {a term of} W,\, w_i\neq w_j{for} i\neq j\},$$ which is a particular kind of weighted restricted sumset. We show that $|W\odot S|\geq \min\{|G|-1,\,n\}$, that $W\odot S=G$ if $n\geq |G|+1$, and also characterize all sequences $S$ of length $|G|$ with $W\odot S\neq G$. This result then allows us to characterize when a linear equation $$a_1x_1+...+a_rx_r\equiv α\mod n,$$ where $α,a_1,..., a_r\in \Z$ are given, has a solution $(x_1,...,x_r)\in \Z^r$ modulo $n$ with all $x_i$ distinct modulo $n$. As a second simple corollary, we also show that there are maximal length minimal zero-sum sequences over a rank 2 finite abelian group $G\cong C_{n_1}\oplus C_{n_2}$ (where $n_1\mid n_2$ and $n_2\geq 3$) having $k$ distinct terms, for any $k\in [3,\min\{n_1+1,\,\exp(G)\}]$. Indeed, apart from a few simple restrictions, any pattern of multiplicities is realizable for such a maximal length minimal zero-sum sequence.

On weighted zero-sum sequences

Let G be a finite additive abelian group with exponent exp(G)=n>1 and let A be a nonempty subset of {1,...,n-1}. In this paper, we investigate the smallest positive integer $m$, denoted by s_A(G), such that any sequence {c_i}_{i=1}^m with terms from G has a length n=exp(G) subsequence {c_{i_j}}_{j=1}^n for which there are a_1,...,a_n in A such that sum_{j=1}^na_ic_{i_j}=0. When G is a p-group, A contains no multiples of p and any two distinct elements of A are incongruent mod p, we show that s_A(G) is at most $\lceil D(G)/|A|\rceil+exp(G)-1$ if |A| is at least (D(G)-1)/(exp(G)-1), where D(G) is the Davenport constant of G and this upper bound for s_A(G)in terms of |A| is essentially best possible. In the case A={1,-1}, we determine the asymptotic behavior of s_{1,-1}(G) when exp(G) is even, showing that, for finite abelian groups of even exponent and fixed rank, s_{1,-1}(G)=exp(G)+log_2|G|+O(log_2log_2|G|) as exp(G) tends to the infinity. Combined with a lower bound of $exp(G)+sum{i=1}{r}\lfloor\log_2 n_i\rfloor$, where $G=\Z_{n_1}\oplus...\oplus \Z_{n_r}$ with 1<n_1|... |n_r, this determines s_{1,-1}(G), for even exponent groups, up to a small order error term. Our method makes use of the theory of L-intersecting set systems. Some additional more specific values and results related to s_{1,-1}(G) are also computed.

Zero-sum problems with congruence conditions

For a finite abelian group $G$ and a positive integer $d$, let $\mathsf s_{d \mathbb N} (G)$ denote the smallest integer $\ell \in \mathbb N_0$ such that every sequence $S$ over $G$ of length $|S| \ge \ell$ has a nonempty zero-sum subsequence $T$ of length $|T| \equiv 0 \mod d$. We determine $\mathsf s_{d \mathbb N} (G)$ for all $d\geq 1$ when $G$ has rank at most two and, under mild conditions on $d$, also obtain precise values in the case of $p$-groups. In the same spirit, we obtain new upper bounds for the Erd{\H o}s--Ginzburg--Ziv constant provided that, for the $p$-subgroups $G_p$ of $G$, the Davenport constant $\mathsf D (G_p)$ is bounded above by $2 \exp (G_p)-1$. This generalizes former results for groups of rank two.

The Catenary Degree of Krull Monoids I

Let $H$ be a Krull monoid with finite class group $G$ such that every class contains a prime divisor (for example, a ring of integers in an algebraic number field or a holomorphy ring in an algebraic function field). The catenary degree $\mathsf c (H)$ of $H$ is the smallest integer $N$ with the following property: for each $a \in H$ and each two factorizations $z, z'$ of $a$, there exist factorizations $z = z_0, ..., z_k = z'$ of $a$ such that, for each $i \in [1, k]$, $z_i$ arises from $z_{i-1}$ by replacing at most $N$ atoms from $z_{i-1}$ by at most $N$ new atoms. Under a very mild condition on the Davenport constant of $G$, we establish a new and simple characterization of the catenary degree. This characterization gives a new structural understanding of the catenary degree. In particular, it clarifies the relationship between $\mathsf c (H)$ and the set of distances of $H$ and opens the way towards obtaining more detailed results on the catenary degree. As first applications, we give a new upper bound on $\mathsf c(H)$ and characterize when $\mathsf c(H)\leq 4$.
