FKN Formula and Ground State Energy for the Spin Boson Model with External Magnetic Field

We consider the spin boson model with external magnetic field. We prove a path integral formula for the heat kernel, known as Feynman-Kac-Nelson (FKN) formula. We use this path integral representation to express the ground state energy as a stochastic integral. Based on this connection, we determine the expansion coefficients of the ground state energy with respect to the magnetic field strength and express them in terms of correlation functions of a continuous Ising model. From a recently proven correlation inequality, we can then deduce that the second order derivative is finite. As an application, we show existence of ground states in infrared-singular situations.

On asymptotic expansions of the density of states for Poisson distributed random Schrödinger operators

We study expectation values of matrix elements for boundary values of the resolvent as well as the density of states for a random Schrödinger operator with potential distributed according to a Poisson process. Asymptotic expansions for these quantities in the limit of small disorder are derived. Explicit estimates for the expansion coefficients are given and we show that their infinite volume limits are in fact finite as the spectral parameter approaches the spectrum of the free Laplacian.

Correlation Bound for a One-Dimensional Continuous Long-Range Ising Model

We consider a measure given as the continuum limit of a one-dimensional Ising model with long-range translationally invariant interactions. Mathematically, the measure can be described by a self-interacting Poisson driven jump process. We prove a correlation inequality, estimating the magnetic susceptibility of this model, which holds for small $L^1$-norm of the interaction function. The bound on the magnetic susceptibility has applications in quantum field theory and can be used to prove existence of ground states for the spin boson model.

Thermal Ionization for Short-Range Potentials

We study a concrete model of a confined particle in form of a Schrödinger operator with a compactly supported smooth potential coupled to a bosonic field at positive temperature. We show, that the model exhibits thermal ionization for any positive temperature, provided the coupling is sufficiently small. Mathematically, one has to rule out that zero is an eigenvalue of the self-adjoint generator of time evolution - the Liouvillian. This will be done by using positive commutator methods with dilations in the space of scattering functions. Our proof relies on a spatial cutoff in the coupling but does otherwise not require any unnatural restrictions.

A vanishing theorem for operators in Fock space

We consider the bosonic Fock space over the Hilbert space of transversal vector fields in three dimensions. This space carries a canonical representation of the group of rotations. For a certain class of operators in Fock space we show that rotation invariance implies the absence of terms which either create or annihilate only a single particle. We outline an application of this result in an operator theoretic renormalization analysis of Hamilton operators, which occur in non-relativistic qed.

Anderson Localization at Band Edges for Random Magnetic Fields

We consider a magnetic Schrödinger operator in two dimensions. The magnetic field is given as the sum of a large and constant magnetic field and a random magnetic field. Moreover, we allow for an additional deterministic potential as well as a magnetic field which are both periodic. We show that the spectrum of this operator is contained in broadened bands around the Landau levels and that the edges of these bands consist of pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions. The proof is based on a recent Wegner estimate obtained in \cite{EH2} and a multiscale analysis.

A geometric approach to absolutely continuous spectrum for discrete Schrödinger operators

We review a geometric approach to proving absolutely continuous (ac) spectrum for random and deterministic Schrödinger operators developed in \cite{FHS1,FHS2,FHS3,FHS4}. We study decaying potentials in one dimension and present a simplified proof of ac spectrum of the Anderson model on trees. The latter implies ac spectrum for a percolation model on trees. Finally, we introduce certain loop tree models which lead to some interesting open problems.

Convergent expansions in non-relativistic QED: Analyticity of the ground state

We consider the ground state of an atom in the framework of non-relativistic qed. We show that the ground state as well as the ground state energy are analytic functions of the coupling constant which couples to the vector potential, under the assumption that the atomic Hamiltonian has a non-degenerate ground state. Moreover, we show that the corresponding expansion coefficients are precisely the coefficients of the associated Raleigh-Schroedinger series. As a corollary we obtain that in a scaling limit where the ultraviolet cutoff is of the order of the Rydberg energy the ground state and the ground state energy have convergent power series expansions in the fine structure constant $α$, with $α$ dependent coefficients which are finite for $α\geq 0$.

Ground States in the Spin Boson Model

We prove that the Hamiltonian of the model describing a spin which is linearly coupled to a field of relativistic and massless bosons, also known as the spin-boson model, admits a ground state for small values of the coupling constant lambda. We show that the ground state energy is an analytic function of lambda and that the corresponding ground state can also be chosen to be an analytic function of lambda. No infrared regularization is imposed. Our proof is based on a modified version of the BFS operator theoretic renormalization analysis. Moreover, using a positivity argument we prove that the ground state of the spin-boson model is unique. We show that the expansion coefficients of the ground state and the ground state energy can be calculated using regular analytic perturbation theory.

Smoothness and analyticity of perturbation expansions in QED

We consider the ground state of an atom in the framework of non-relativistic qed. We assume that the ultraviolet cutoff is of the order of the Rydberg energy and that the atomic Hamiltonian has a non-degenerate ground state. We show that the ground state energy and the ground state are k-times continuously differentiable functions of the fine structure constant and respectively the square root of the fine structure constant on some nonempty interval [0,c_k).

Wegner estimate and Anderson localization for random magnetic fields

We consider a two dimensional magnetic Schroedinger operator with a spatially stationary random magnetic field. We assume that the magnetic field has a positive lower bound and that it has Fourier modes on arbitrarily short scales. We prove the Wegner estimate at arbitrary energy, i.e. we show that the averaged density of states is finite throughout the whole spectrum. We also prove Anderson localization at the bottom of the spectrum.

On the AC spectrum of one-dimensional random Schroedinger operators with matrix-valued potentials

We consider discrete one-dimensional random Schroedinger operators with decaying matrix-valued, independent potentials. We show that if the l^2-norm of this potential has finite expectation value with respect to the product measure then almost surely the Schroedinger operator has an interval of purely absolutely continuous (ac) spectrum. We apply this result to Schroedinger operators on a strip. This work provides a new proof and generalizes a result obtained by Delyon, Simon, and Souillard.

Absolutely continuous spectrum for a random potential on a tree with strong transverse correlations and large weighted loops

We consider random Schrödinger operators on tree graphs and prove absolutely continuous spectrum at small disorder for two models. The first model is the usual binary tree with certain strongly correlated random potentials. These potentials are of interest since for complete correlation they exhibit localization at all disorders. In the second model we change the tree graph by adding all possible edges to the graph inside each sphere, with weights proportional to the number of points in the sphere.

Analytic Perturbation Theory and Renormalization Analysis of Matter Coupled to Quantized Radiation

For a large class of quantum mechanical models of matter and radiation we develop an analytic perturbation theory for non-degenerate ground states. This theory is applicable, for example, to models of matter with static nuclei and non-relativistic electrons that are coupled to the UV-cutoff quantized radiation field in the dipole approximation. If the lowest point of the energy spectrum is a non-degenerate eigenvalue of the Hamiltonian, we show that this eigenvalue is an analytic function of the nuclear coordinates and of $α^{3/2}$, $α$ being the fine structure constant. A suitably chosen ground state vector depends analytically on $α^{3/2}$ and it is twice continuously differentiable with respect to the nuclear coordinates.
