Highly symmetric matroids, the strong Rayleigh property, and sums of squares

We investigate the strong Rayleigh property of matroids for which the basis enumerating polynomial is invariant under a Young subgroup of the symmetric group on the ground set. In general, the Grace-Walsh-Szegő theorem can be used to simplify the problem. When the Young subgroup has only two orbits, such a matroid is strongly Rayleigh if and only if an associated univariate polynomial has only real roots. When this polynomial is quadratic we get an explicit structural criterion for the strong Rayleigh property. Finally, if one of the orbits has rank two then the matroid is strongly Rayleigh if and only if the Rayleigh difference of any two points on this line is in fact a sum of squares.

Proof of the monotone column permanent conjecture

Let A be an n-by-n matrix of real numbers which are weakly decreasing down each column, Z_n = diag(z_1,..., z_n) a diagonal matrix of indeterminates, and J_n the n-by-n matrix of all ones. We prove that per(J_nZ_n+A) is stable in the z_i, resolving a recent conjecture of Haglund and Visontai. This immediately implies that per(zJ_n+A) is a polynomial in z with only real roots, an open conjecture of Haglund, Ono, and Wagner from 1999. Other applications include a multivariate stable Eulerian polynomial, a new proof of Grace's apolarity theorem and new permanental inequalities.

The lattice of integer flows of a regular matroid

For a finite multigraph G, let Λ(G) denote the lattice of integer flows of G -- this is a finitely generated free abelian group with an integer-valued positive definite bilinear form. Bacher, de la Harpe, and Nagnibeda show that if G and H are 2-isomorphic graphs then Λ(G) and Λ(H) are isometric, and remark that they were unable to find a pair of nonisomorphic 3-connected graphs for which the corresponding lattices are isometric. We explain this by examining the lattice Λ(M) of integer flows of any regular matroid M. Let M_\bullet be the minor of M obtained by contracting all co-loops. We show that Λ(M) and Λ(N) are isometric if and only if M_\bullet and N_\bullet are isomorphic.

A converse to the Grace--Walsh--Szegő theorem

We prove that the symmetrizer of a permutation group preserves stability of a polynomial if and only if the group is orbit homogeneous. A consequence is that the hypothesis of permutation invariance in the Grace-Walsh-Szegő Coincidence Theorem cannot be relaxed. In the process we obtain a new characterization of the \emph{Grace-like polynomials} introduced by D. Ruelle, and prove that the class of such polynomials can be endowed with a natural multiplication.

On the chromatic roots of generalized theta graphs

The generalized theta graph Θ_{s_1,...,s_k} consists of a pair of endvertices joined by k internally disjoint paths of lengths s_1,...,s_k \ge 1. We prove that the roots of the chromatic polynomial $pi(Θ_{s_1,...,s_k},z) of a k-ary generalized theta graph all lie in the disc |z-1| \le [1 + o(1)] k/\log k, uniformly in the path lengths s_i. Moreover, we prove that Θ_{2,...,2} \simeq K_{2,k} indeed has a chromatic root of modulus [1 + o(1)] k/\log k. Finally, for k \le 8 we prove that the generalized theta graph with a chromatic root that maximizes |z-1| is the one with all path lengths equal to 2; we conjecture that this holds for all k.

The Tutte dichromate and Whitney homology of matroids

We consider a specialization $Y_M(q,t)$ of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid $M$ which is inspired by analogy with the Potts model from statistical mechanics. The only information lost in this specialization is the number of loops of $M$. We show that the coefficients of $Y_M(1-p,t)$ are very simply related to the ranks of the Whitney homology groups of the opposite partial orders of the independent set complexes of the duals of the truncations of $M$. In particular, we obtain a new homological interpretation for the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a matroid.
