Abelian subalgebras and ideals of maximal dimension in Zinbiel algebras

In this paper, we compare the abelian subalgebras and ideals of maximal dimension for finite-dimensional Zinbiel algebras. We study Zinbiel algebras containing maximal abelian subalgebras of codimension 11 and supersolvable Zinbiel algebras in which such subalgebras have codimension 22, and we also analyze the case of filiform Zinbiel algebras. We give examples to clarify some results, including listing the values for αα and ββ for the low dimensional Zinbiel algebras over the complex field that have been classified.

On the subalgebra lattice of a restricted Lie algebra]{On the subalgebra lattice of a restricted Lie algebra

In this paper we study the lattice of restricted subalgebras of a restricted Lie algebra. In particular, we consider those algebras in which this lattice is dually atomistic, lower or upper semimodular, or in which every restricted subalgebra is a quasi-ideal. The fact that there are one-dimensional subalgebras which are not restricted results in some of these conditions being weaker than for the corresponding conditions in the non-restricted case.

On certain classes of algebras in which centralizers are ideals

This paper is primarily concerned with studying finite-dimensional anti-commutative nonassociative algebras in which every centralizer is an ideal. These are shown to be anti-associative and are classified over a general field FF; in particular, they are nilpotent of class at most 33 and metabelian. These results are then applied to show that a Leibniz algebra over a field of charactersitic zero in which all centralizers are ideals is solvable.

Weak c-ideals of Lie algebras

A subalgebra B of a Lie algebra L is called a weak c-ideal of L if there is a subideal C of L such that L = B+C and B\cap C \subseteq B_L where B_L is the largest ideal of L contained in B. This is analogous to the concept of weakly c- normal subgroups, which has been studied by a number of authors. We obtain some properties of weak c-ideals and use them to give some characterisations of solvable and supersolvable Lie algebras. We also note that one-dimensional weak c-ideals are c-ideals.

Lie algebras with nilpotent length greater than that of each of their subalgebras

The main purpose of this paper is to study the finite-dimensional solvable Lie algebras described in its title, which we call {\em minimal non-N{\mathcal N}}. To facilitate this we investigate solvable Lie algebras of nilpotent length kk, and of nilpotent length ≤k\leq k, and {\em extreme} Lie algebras, which have the property that their nilpotent length is equal to the number of conjugacy classes of maximal subalgebras. We characterise the minimal non-N{\mathcal N} Lie algebras in which every nilpotent subalgebra is abelian, and those of solvability index ≤3\leq 3.

On n-maximal subalgebras of Lie algebras

A chain S0<S1<…<Sn=LS_0 < S_1 < \ldots < S_n = L is a {\em maximal chain} if each SiS_i is a maximal subalgebra of Si+1S_{i+1}. The subalgebra S0S_0 in such a series is called an {\em nn-maximal} subalgebra. There are many interesting results concerning the question of what certain intrinsic properties of the maximal subalgebras of a Lie algebra LL imply about the structure of LL itself. Here we consider whether similar results can be obtained by imposing conditions on the nn-maximal subalgebras of LL, where n>1n>1.

C-sections of Lie algebras

Let MM be a maximal subalgebra of a Lie algebra LL and A/BA/B a chief factor of LL such that B⊆MB \subseteq M and A⊈MA \not \subseteq M. We call the factor algebra M∩A/BM \cap A/B a cc-section of MM. All such cc-sections are isomorphic, and this concept is related those of cc-ideals and ideal index previously introduced by the author. Properties of cc-sections are studied and some new characterizations of solvable Lie algebras are obtained.

Maximal subalgebras and chief factors of Lie algebras

This paper is a continued investigation of the structure of Lie algebras in relation to their chief factors, using concepts that are analogous to corresponding ones in group theory. The first section investigates the structure of Lie algebras with a core-free maximal subalgebra. The results obtained are then used in section two to consider the relationship of two chief factors of L being L-connected, a weaker equivalence relation on the set of chief factors than that of being isomorphic as L-modules. A strengthened form of the Jordan-Holder Theorem in which Frattini chief factors correspond is also established for every Lie algebra. The final section introduces the concept of a crown, a notion introduced in group theory by Gaschutz, and shows that it gives much information about the chief factors

Subalgebras that cover or avoid chief factors of Lie algebras

We call a subalgebra UU of a Lie algebra LL a CAPCAP-subalgebra of LL if for any chief factor H/KH/K of LL, we have H∩U=K∩UH \cap U = K \cap U or H+U=K+UH+U = K+U. In this paper we investigate some properties of such subalgebras and obtain some characterizations for a finite-dimensional Lie algebra LL to be solvable under the assumption that some of its maximal subalgebras or 22-maximal subalgebras be CAPCAP-subalgebras.

On abelian subalgebras and ideals of maximal dimension in supersolvable lie algebras

In this paper, the main objective is to compare the abelian subalgebras and ideals of maximal dimension for finite-dimensional supersolvable Lie algebras. We characterise the maximal abelian subalgebras of solvable Lie algebras and study solvable Lie algebras containing an abelian subalgebra of codimension 2. Finally, we prove that nilpotent Lie algebras with an abelian subalgebra of codimension 3 contain an abelian ideal with the same dimension, provided that the characteristic of the underlying field is not two. Throughout the paper, we also give several examples to clarify some results.

On the Lengths of Certain Chains of Subalgebras in Lie Algebras

In this paper we study the lengths of certain chains of subalgebras of a Lie algebra L: namely, a chief series, a maximal chain of minimal length, a chain of maximal length in which each subalgebra is modular in L, and a chain of maximal length in which each subalgebra is a quasi-ideal of L. In particular we show that, over a field of characteristic zero, a Lie algebra L with radical R has a maximal chain of subalgebras and a chain of subalgebras all of which are modular in L of the same length if and only if L = R, or F⊈F\sqrt{F} \not \subseteq F and L/R is a direct sum of isomorphic three-dimensional simple Lie algebras.

On maximal subalgebras of Lie algebras containing Engel subalgebras

Relationships between certain properties of maximal subalgebras of a Lie algebra LL and the structure of LL itself have been studied by a number of authors. Amongst the maximal subalgebras, however, some exert a greater influence on particular results than others. Here we study properties of those maximal subalgebras that contain Engel subalgebras, and of those that also have codimension greater than one in LL.

Supplements to maximal subalgebras of Lie algebras

For a Lie algebra LL and a subalgebra MM of LL we say that a subalgebra UU of LL is a {\em supplement} to MM in LL if L=M+UL = M + U. We investigate those Lie algebras all of whose maximal subalgebras have abelian supplements, those that have nilpotent supplements, those that have nil supplements, and those that have supplements with the property that their derived algebra is inside the maximal subalgebra being supplemented. For the algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero in the last three of these classes we find complete descriptions; for those in the first class partial results are obtained.

The index complex of a maximal subalgebra of a Lie algebra

Let M be a maximal subalgebra of the Lie algebra L. A subalgebra C of L is said to be a completion for M if C is not contained in M but every proper subalgebra of C that is an ideal of L is contained in M. The set I(M) of all completions of M is called the index complex of M in L. We use this concept to investigate the influence of the maximal subalgebras on the structure of a Lie algebra, in particular finding new characterisations of solvable and supersolvable Lie algebras.
