Arithmetical structures on bidents

An arithmetical structure on a finite, connected graph $G$ is a pair of vectors $(\mathbf{d}, \mathbf{r})$ with positive integer entries for which $(\operatorname{diag}(\mathbf{d}) - A)\mathbf{r} = \mathbf{0}$, where $A$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$ and where the entries of $\mathbf{r}$ have no common factor. The critical group of an arithmetical structure is the torsion part of the cokernel of $(\operatorname{diag}(\mathbf{d}) - A)$. In this paper, we study arithmetical structures and their critical groups on bidents, which are graphs consisting of a path with two "prongs" at one end. We give a process for determining the number of arithmetical structures on the bident with $n$ vertices and show that this number grows at the same rate as the Catalan numbers as $n$ increases. We also completely characterize the groups that occur as critical groups of arithmetical structures on bidents.

Chip-Firing Games and Critical Groups

In this expository article intended to be accessible to undergraduate students we introduce a finite abelian group that can be associated to any finite connected graph. This group can be defined in an elementary combinatorial way in terms of chip-firing operations, and has been an object of interest in combinatorics, algebraic geometry, statistical physics, and several other areas of mathematics. We will begin with basic definitions and examples and develop a number of properties that can be derived by looking at this group from different angles. Throughout, we will give exercises, some of which are straightforward and some of which are open questions. We will also attempt to highlight some of the many contributions to this area made by undergraduate students

Counting Arithmetical Structures on Paths and Cycles

Let $G$ be a finite, simple, connected graph. An arithmetical structure on $G$ is a pair of positive integer vectors $\mathbf{d},\mathbf{r}$ such that $(\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{d})-A)\mathbf{r}=0$, where $A$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$. We investigate the combinatorics of arithmetical structures on path and cycle graphs, as well as the associated critical groups (the cokernels of the matrices $(\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{d})-A)$). For paths, we prove that arithmetical structures are enumerated by the Catalan numbers, and we obtain refined enumeration results related to ballot sequences. For cycles, we prove that arithmetical structures are enumerated by the binomial coefficients $\binom{2n-1}{n-1}$, and we obtain refined enumeration results related to multisets. In addition, we determine the critical groups for all arithmetical structures on paths and cycles.

Critical Groups of Graphs with Dihedral Actions II

In this paper we consider the critical group of finite connected graphs which admit harmonic actions by the dihedral group $D_n$, extending earlier work by the author and Criel Merino. In particular, we show that the critical group of such a graph can be decomposed in terms of the critical groups of the quotients of the graph by certain subgroups of the automorphism group. This is analogous to a theorem of Kani and Rosen which decomposes the Jacobians of algebraic curves with a $D_n$-action.

Sandpiles, spanning trees, and plane duality

Let G be a connected, loopless multigraph. The sandpile group of G is a finite abelian group associated to G whose order is equal to the number of spanning trees in G. Holroyd et al. used a dynamical process on graphs called rotor-routing to define a simply transitive action of the sandpile group of G on its set of spanning trees. Their definition depends on two pieces of auxiliary data: a choice of a ribbon graph structure on G, and a choice of a root vertex. Chan, Church, and Grochow showed that if G is a planar ribbon graph, it has a canonical rotor-routing action associated to it, i.e., the rotor-routing action is actually independent of the choice of root vertex. It is well-known that the spanning trees of a planar graph G are in canonical bijection with those of its planar dual G*, and furthermore that the sandpile groups of G and G* are isomorphic. Thus, one can ask: are the two rotor-routing actions, of the sandpile group of G on its spanning trees, and of the sandpile group of G* on its spanning trees, compatible under plane duality? In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to this question, which had been conjectured by Baker.

Critical Groups of Graphs with Dihedral Actions

In this paper we consider the critical group of finite connected graphs which admit harmonic actions by the dihedral group $D_n$. In particular, we show that if the orbits of the $D_n$-action all have either $n$ or $2n$ points then the critical group of such a graph can be decomposed in terms of the critical groups of the quotients of the graph by certain subgroups of the automorphism group. This is analogous to a theorem of Kani and Rosen which decomposes the Jacobians of algebraic curves with a $D_n$-action.

Curves of given $p$-rank with trivial automorphism group

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p >0$. Suppose $g \geq 3$ and $0 \leq f \leq g$. We prove there is a smooth projective $k$-curve of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ with no non-trivial automorphisms. In addition, we prove there is a smooth projective hyperelliptic $k$-curve of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ whose only non-trivial automorphism is the hyperelliptic involution. The proof involves computations about the dimension of the moduli space of (hyperelliptic) $k$-curves of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ with extra automorphisms.

Hyperelliptic Curves with Prescribed $p$-Torsion

In this paper, we show that there exist families of curves (defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p >2$) whose Jacobians have interesting $p$-torsion. For example, for every $0 \leq f \leq g$, we find the dimension of the locus of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ with $p$-rank at most $f$. We also produce families of curves so that the $p$-torsion of the Jacobian of each fibre contains multiple copies of the group scheme $α_p$. The method is to study curves which admit an action by $(\ZZ/2)^n$ so that the quotient is a projective line. As a result, some of these families intersect the hyperelliptic locus $\CH_g$.
