On the reconstruction of cavities in a nonlinear model arising from cardiac electrophysiology

In this paper, we deal with the problem of determining perfectly insulating regions (cavities) from one boundary measurement in a nonlinear elliptic equation arising from cardiac electrophysiology. Based on the results obtained in [9] we propose a new reconstruction algorithm based on $Γ$-convergence. The relevance and applicability of this approach are then shown through several numerical experiments.

Local minimizers in absence of ground states for the critical NLS energy on metric graphs

We consider the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on non-compact metric graphs. A quite complete description of the structure of the ground states, which correspond to global minimizers of the energy functional under a mass constraint, is provided by Adami, Serra and Tilli in arXiv:1605.07666, where it is proved that existence and properties of ground states depend in a crucial way on both the value of the mass, and the topological properties of the underlying graph. In this paper we address cases when ground states do not exist and show that, under suitable assumptions, constrained local minimizers of the energy do exist. This result paves the way to the existence of stable solutions in the time-dependent equation in cases where the ground state energy level is not achieved.

Normalized bound states for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation in bounded domains

Given $ρ>0$, we study the elliptic problem \[ \text{find } (U,λ)\in H^1_0(Ω)\times \mathbb{R} \text{ such that } \begin{cases} -ΔU+λU=|U|^{p-1}U \int_Ω U^2\, dx=ρ, \end{cases} \] where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ is a bounded domain and $p>1$ is Sobolev-subcritical, searching for conditions (about $ρ$, $N$ and $p$) for the existence of solutions. By the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality it follows that, when $p$ is $L^2$-subcritical, i.e. $1<p\leq1+4/N$, the problem admits solution for every $ρ>0$. In the $L^2$-critical and supercritical case, i.e. when $1+4/N \leq p < 2^*-1$, we show that, for any $k\in\mathbb{N}$, the problem admits solutions having Morse index bounded above by $k$ only if $ρ$ is sufficiently small. Next we provide existence results for certain ranges of $ρ$, which can be estimated in terms of the Dirichlet eigenvalues of $-Δ$ in $H^1_0(Ω)$, extending to general domains and to changing sign solutions some results obtained in [Noris, Tavares, Verzini, Analysis & PDE, 2014] for positive solutions in the ball.

Concentration along geodescis for a nonlinear Steklov problem arising in corrosion modelling

We consider the problem of finding pairs $(λ; u)$, with $λ> 0$ and $u$ a harmonic function in a three dimensional torus-like domain, satisfying the nonlinear boundary condition $\partial_ν u = λ\sinh u$ on the boundary. This type of boundary condition arises in corrosion modelling (Butler Volmer condition). We prove existence of solutions which concentrate along some geodesics of the boundary as the parameter $λ$ goes to zero.

On a semilinear elliptic boundary value problem arising in cardiac electrophysiology

In this paper we provide a representation formula for boundary voltage perturbations caused by internal conductivity inhomogeneities of low volume fraction in a simplified {\em monodomain model} describing the electric activity of the heart. We derive such a result in the case of a nonlinear problem. Our long-term goal is the solution of the inverse problem related to the detection of regions affected by heart ischemic disease, whose position and size are unknown. We model the presence of ischemic regions in the form of small inhomogeneities. This leads to the study of a boundary value problem for a semilinear elliptic equation. We first analyze the well-posedness of the problem establishing some key energy estimates. These allow us to derive rigorously an asymptotic formula of the boundary potential perturbation due to the presence of the inhomogeneities, following an approach similar to the one introduced by Capdeboscq and Vogelius in \cite{capvoge} in the case of the linear conductivity equation. Finally, we propose some ideas of the reconstruction procedure that might be used to detect the inhomogeneities.
