Reconfigurable topological states in arrays of bianisotropic particles

Topological photonics promotes a novel approach to resilient light manipulation by exploiting spatio-temporal symmetries of the system and dual symmetry of electromagnetic field. Various prospective device applications pose the need to flexibly control robust field localization associated with topological modes. Here we design a topological array of resonant dielectric meta-atoms with bianisotropic response induced by a spatial symmetry reduction. Mutual orientation of the designed meta-atoms encodes a staggered bianisotropy pattern capable of trapping topological states in a one-dimensional array containing a small number of particles. We show that the topological interface state can be tailored by the rotation of coaxial bianisotropic particles arranged in an equidistant lattice. Our experimental implementation based on ceramic horseshoe-shaped disks demonstrates remarkable reconfigurability of electromagnetic topological states.

Nonlinear signatures of Floquet band topology

We study how the nonlinear propagation dynamics of bulk states may be used to distinguish topological phases of slowly-driven Floquet lattices. First, we show how instabilities of nonlinear Bloch waves may be used to populate Floquet bands and measure their Chern number via the emergence of nontrivial polarization textures in a similar manner to static (undriven) lattices. Second, we show how the nonlinear dynamics of non-stationary superposition states may be used to identify dynamical symmetry inversion points in the intra-cycle dynamics, thereby allowing anomalous Floquet phases to be distinguished from the trivial phase. The approaches may be readily implemented using light propagation in nonlinear waveguide arrays.

Probing band topology using modulational instability

We analyze the modulational instability of nonlinear Bloch waves in topological photonic lattices. In the initial phase of the instability development captured by the linear stability analysis, long wavelength instabilities and bifurcations of the nonlinear Bloch waves are sensitive to topological band inversions. At longer timescales, nonlinear wave mixing induces spreading of energy through the entire band and spontaneous creation of wave polarization singularities determined by the band Chern number. Our analytical and numerical results establish modulational instability as a tool to probe bulk topological invariants and create topologically non-trivial wave fields.

Enhanced Light-Matter Interactions in Dielectric Nanostructures via Machine Learning Approach

A key concept underlying the specific functionalities of metasurfaces, i.e. arrays of subwavelength nanoparticles, is the use of constituent components to shape the wavefront of the light, on-demand. Metasurfaces are versatile and novel platforms to manipulate the scattering, colour, phase or the intensity of the light. Currently, one of the typical approaches for designing a metasurface is to optimize one or two variables, among a vast number of fixed parameters, such as various materials' properties and coupling effects, as well as the geometrical parameters. Ideally, it would require a multi-dimensional space optimization through direct numerical simulations. Recently, an alternative approach became quite popular allowing to reduce the computational cost significantly based on a deep-learning-assisted method. In this paper, we utilize a deep-learning approach for obtaining high-quality factor (high-Q) resonances with desired characteristics, such as linewidth, amplitude and spectral position. We exploit such high-Q resonances for the enhanced light-matter interaction in nonlinear optical metasurfaces and optomechanical vibrations, simultaneously. We demonstrate that optimized metasurfaces lead up to 400+ folds enhancement of the third harmonic generation (THG); at the same time, they also contribute to 100+ folds enhancement in optomechanical vibrations. This approach can be further used to realize structures with unconventional scattering responses.

Nonlocal response of Mie-resonant dielectric particles

Mie-resonant high-index dielectric particles are at the core of modern all-dielectric photonics. In many situations, their response to the external fields is well-captured by the dipole model which neglects the excitation of higher-order multipoles. In that case, it is commonly assumed that the dipole moments induced by the external fields are given by the product of particle polarizability tensor and the field in the particle center. Here, we demonstrate that the dipole response of non-spherical subwavelength dielectric particles is significantly more complex since the dipole moments are defined not only by the field in the particle center but also by the second-order spatial derivatives of the field. As we prove, such nonlocal response is especially pronounced in the vicinity of anapole minimum in the scattering cross-section. We examine the excitation of high-index dielectric disk in microwave domain and silicon nanodisk in near infrared applying group-theoretical analysis and retrieving the nonlocal corrections to the dipole moments. Extending the discrete dipole model to include nonlocality of the dipole response, we demonstrate an improved agreement with full-wave numerical simulations. These results provide important insights into meta-optics of Mie-resonant non-spherical particles as well as metamaterials and metadevices based on them.

Probing bulk topological invariants using leaky photonic lattices

Topological invariants characterising filled Bloch bands attract enormous interest, underpinning electronic topological insulators and analogous artificial lattices for Bose-Einstein condensates, photons, and acoustic waves. In the latter bosonic systems there is no Fermi exclusion principle to enforce uniform band filling, which makes measurement of their bulk topological invariants challenging. Here we show how to achieve controllable filling of bosonic bands using leaky photonic lattices. Leaky photonic lattices host transitions between bound and radiative modes at a critical energy, which plays a role analogous to the electronic Fermi level. Tuning this effective Fermi level into a band gap results in disorder-robust dynamical quantization of bulk topological invariants such as the Chern number. Our findings establish leaky lattices as a novel and highly flexible platform for exploring topological and non-Hermitian wave physics.

Multipolar third-harmonic generation driven by optically-induced magnetic resonances

We analyze third-harmonic generation from high-index dielectric nanoparticles and discuss the basic features and multipolar nature of the parametrically generated electromagnetic fields near the Mie-type optical resonances. By combining both analytical and numerical methods, we study the nonlinear scattering from simple nanoparticle geometries such as spheres and disks in the vicinity of the magnetic dipole resonance. We reveal the approaches for manipulating and directing the resonantly enhanced nonlinear emission with subwavelength all-dielectric structures that can be of a particular interest for novel designs of nonlinear optical antennas and engineering the magnetic optical nonlinear response at nanoscale.

Cascaded third harmonic generation in hybrid graphene-semiconductor waveguides

We study cascaded harmonic generation of hybrid surface plasmons in integrated planar waveguides composed of a graphene layer and a doped-semiconductor slab. We derive a comprehensive model of cascaded third harmonic generation through phase-matched nonlinear interaction of fundamental, second harmonic and third harmonic plasmonic modes supported by the structure. We show that hybrid graphene-semiconductor waveguides can simultaneously phase-match these three interacting harmonics, increasing the total third-harmonic output by a factor of 5 compared to the non-cascaded regime.

Discrete solitons in graphene metamaterials

We study nonlinear properties of multilayer metamaterials created by graphene sheets separated by dielectric layers. We demonstrate that such structures can support localized nonlinear modes described by the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation and that its solutions are associated with stable discrete plasmon solitons. We also analyze the nonlinear surface modes in truncated graphene metamaterials being a nonlinear analog of surface Tamm states.

Observation of topological edge modes in bianisotropic metamaterials

Existence of robust edge modes at interfaces of topologically dissimilar systems is one of the most fascinating manifestations of a novel nontrivial state of matter, topological insulators. Such electronic states were originally predicted and discovered in condensed matter physics, but they find their counterparts in other fields of physics, including the physics of classical waves and electromagnetics. Here, we present the first experimental realization of a topological insulator for electromagnetic waves based on engineered bianisotropic metamaterials. By employing the near-field scanning technique, we demonstrate experimentally the topologically robust propagation of electromagnetic waves around sharp corners without back reflection.

Tunable nonlinear graphene metasurfaces

We introduce the concept of nonlinear graphene metasurfaces employing the controllable interaction between a graphene layer and a planar metamaterial. Such hybrid metasurfaces support two types of subradiant resonant modes, asymmetric modes of structured metamaterial elements ("metamolecules") and graphene plasmons exhibiting strong mutual coupling and avoided dispersion crossing. High tunability of graphene plasmons facilitates strong interaction between the subradiant modes, modifying the spectral position and lifetime of the associated Fano resonances. We demonstrate that strong resonant interaction, combined with the subwavelength localization of plasmons, leads to the enhanced nonlinear response and high efficiency of the second-harmonic generation.

Dissipative plasmon solitons in graphene nanodisk arrays

We study nonlinear modes in one-dimensional arrays of doped graphene nanodisks with Kerr-type nonlinear response in the presence of an external electric field. We present the theoretical model describing the evolution of the disks' polarizations, taking into account intrinsic graphene losses and dipole-dipole coupling between the graphene nanodisks. We reveal that this nonlinear system can support discrete dissipative scalar solitons of both longitudinal and transverse polarizations, as well as vector solitons composed of two mutually coupled polarization components. We demonstrate the formation of stable resting and moving localized modes under controlling guidance of the external driving field.

Dynamics and stability of dark solitons in exciton-polariton condensates

We present a comprehensive analytical theory of localized nonlinear excitations - dark solitons, supported by an incoherently pumped, spatially homogeneous exciton-polariton condensate. We show that, in contrast to dark solitons in conservative systems, these nonlinear excitations "relax" by blending with the background at a finite time, which critically depends on the parameters of the condensate. Our analytical results for trajectory and lifetime are in excellent agreement with direct numerical simulations of the open-dissipative mean-field model. In addition, we show that transverse instability of quasi-one-dimensional dark stripes in a two-dimensional open-dissipative condensate demonstrates features that are entirely absent in conservative systems, as creation of vortex-antivortex pairs competes with the soliton relaxation process.

Dissipative plasmon-solitons in multilayer graphene

Nonlinear properties of a multi-layer stack of graphene sheets are studied. It is predicted that such a structure may support dissipative plasmon-solitons generated and supported by an external laser radiation. Novel nonlinear equations describing spatial dynamics of the nonlinear plasmons driven by a plane wave in the Otto configuration are derived and the existence of single and multi-hump dissipative solitons in the graphene structure is predicted.

Extraordinary localization of TE-waves at the graphene layer

The propagation of electromagnetic waves along the surface of a nonlinear dielectric covered by a graphene layer is investigated. The main result is that such a surface can support and stabilize nonlinear transverse electric (TE) plasmon polaritons. We demonstrated that these nonlinear TE modes have a subwavelength localization in the direction perpendicular to the surface, with the intensity much higher than that of the incident wave which excites the polariton.
