Black hole formation in Randall-Sundrum II braneworlds

We present the first numerical study of the full dynamics of a braneworld scenario, working within the framework of the single brane model of Randall and Sundrum (RSII). In particular, we study the process of gravitational collapse driven by a massless scalar field which is confined to the brane. Imposing spherical symmetry on the brane, we show that the evolutions of sufficiently strong initial configurations of the scalar field result in black holes that have finite extension into the bulk. Furthermore, we find preliminary evidence that the black holes generated form a unique sequence, irrespective of the details of the initial data. The black hole solutions we obtain from dynamical evolutions are consistent with those previously computed from a static vacuum ansatz.

Gravitational Collapse and Black Hole Formation in a Braneworld

In this thesis we present the first numerical study of gravitational collapse in braneworlds within the framework of the single brane model proposed by Randall and Sundrum (RSII). We directly show that the evolutions of sufficiently strong initial data configurations result in black holes (BHs) with finite extension into the bulk. The extension changes from sphere to pancake (or cigar, seen from a different perspective) as the size of BH increases. We find preliminary evidences that BHs of the same size generated from distinct initial data profiles are geometrically indistinguishable. As such, a no-hair theorem of BH (uniqueness of BH) is suggested to hold in the RSII spacetimes studied in this thesis---these spacetimes are axisymmetric without angular momentum and non-gravitational charges. In particular, the BHs we obtained as the results of the dynamical system, are consistent with the ones previously obtained from a static vacuum system by Figueras and Wiseman. We also obtained some results in closed form without numerical computation such as the equality of ADM mass of the brane with the total mass of the braneworld. The calculation within the braneworld requires advances in the formalism of numerical relativity (NR). The regularity problem in previous numerical calculations in axisymmetric (and spherically symmetric) spacetimes, is actually associated with neither coordinate systems nor the machine precision. The fundamental variables (the unknown functions to be solved for in numerical calculations) are more important to make the numerical calculations in cylindrical coordinates regular. The generalized harmonic (GH) formalism and the BSSN formalism for general relativity are developed to make them suitable for calculations in non-Cartesian coordinates under non-flat background. A conformal function of the metric is included into the GH formalism to simulate the braneworld.

Spherical collapse in f(R) gravity and the Belinskii-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz conjecture

Spherical scalar collapse in f(R) gravity is studied numerically in double-null coordinates in the Einstein frame. Dynamics in the vicinity of the singularity of the formed black hole is examined via mesh refinement and asymptotic analysis. Before the collapse, the scalar degree of freedom f' is coupled to a physical scalar field, and general relativity is restored. During the collapse, the major energy of the physical scalar field moves to the center. As a result, f' loses the coupling and becomes light, and gravity transits from general relativity to f(R) gravity. Due to strong gravity from the singularity and the low mass of f', f' will cross the minimum of the potential and approach zero. Therefore, the dynamical solution is significantly different from the static solution of the black hole in f(R) gravity---it is not the de Sitter-Schwarzschild solution as one might have expected. f' tries to suppress the evolution of the physical scalar field, which is a dark energy effect. As the singularity is approached, metric terms are dominant over other terms. The Kasner solution for spherical scalar collapse in f(R) theory is obtained and confirmed by numerical results. These results support the Belinskii-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz conjecture well.

Into the bulk: reconstructing spacetime from the c=1 matrix model

We write down exact solutions in the collective field theory of the c=1 matrix model and in dilaton-gravity coupled to a massless scalar. Using the known correspondence between these two theories at the null boundaries of spacetime, we make a connection between scalar fields in these two theories in the bulk of spacetime. In the process, we gain insight into how a theory containing gravity can be equivalent to one without gravity. We analyze a simple time-dependent background as an example.
