Areas and entropies in BFSS/gravity duality

The BFSS matrix model provides an example of gauge-theory / gravity duality where the gauge theory is a model of ordinary quantum mechanics with no spatial subsystems. If there exists a general connection between areas and entropies in this model similar to the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, the entropies must be more general than the usual subsystem entanglement entropies. In this note, we first investigate the extremal surfaces in the geometries dual to the BFSS model at zero and finite temperature. We describe a method to associate regulated areas to these surfaces and calculate the areas explicitly for a family of surfaces preserving $SO(8)$ symmetry, both at zero and finite temperature. We then discuss possible entropic quantities in the matrix model that could be dual to these regulated areas.

Entanglement entropy on a fuzzy sphere with a UV cutoff

We introduce a UV cutoff into free scalar field theory on the noncommutative (fuzzy) two-sphere. Due to the IR-UV connection, varying the UV cutoff allows us to control the effective nonlocality scale of the theory. In the resulting fuzzy geometry, we establish which degrees of freedom lie within a specific geometric subregion and compute the associated vacuum entanglement entropy. Entanglement entropy for regions smaller than the effective nonlocality scale is extensive, while entanglement entropy for regions larger than the effective nonlocality scale follows the area law. This reproduces features previously obtained in the strong coupling regime through holography. We also show that mutual information is unaffected by the UV cutoff.

Emergent geometry of membranes

In work arXiv:1204.2788, a surface embedded in flat $R^3$ is associated to any three hermitian matrices. We study this emergent surface when the matrices are large, by constructing coherent states corresponding to points in the emergent geometry. We find the original matrices determine not only shape of the emergent surface, but also a unique Poisson structure. We prove that commutators of matrix operators correspond to Poisson brackets. Through our construction, we can realize arbitrary noncommutative membranes: for example, we examine a round sphere with a non-spherically symmetric Poisson structure. We also give a natural construction for a noncommutative torus embedded in $R^3$. Finally, we make remarks about area and find matrix equations for minimal area surfaces.

Noncommutative spaces and matrix embeddings on flat R^{2n+1}

We conjecture an embedding operator which assigns, to any 2n+1 hermitian matrices, a 2n-dimensional hypersurface in flat (2n + 1)-dimensional Euclidean space. This corresponds to precisely defining a fuzzy D(2n)-brane corresponding to N D0-branes. Points on the emergent hypersurface correspond to zero eigenstates of the embedding operator, which have an interpretation as coherent states underlying the emergent noncommutative geometry. Using this correspondence, all physical properties of the emergent D(2n)-brane can be computed. We apply our conjecture to noncommutative flat and spherical spaces. As a by-product, we obtain a construction of a rotationally symmetric flat noncommutative space in 4 dimensions.

Entanglement entropy on the fuzzy sphere

We obtain entanglement entropy on the noncommutative (fuzzy) two-sphere. To define a subregion with a well defined boundary in this geometry, we use the symbol map between elements of the noncommutative algebra and functions on the sphere. We find that entanglement entropy is not proportional to the length of the region's boundary. Rather, in agreement with holographic predictions, it is extensive for regions whose area is a small (but fixed) fraction of the total area of the sphere. This is true even in the limit of small noncommutativity. We also find that entanglement entropy grows linearly with N, where N is the size of the irreducible representation of SU(2) used to define the fuzzy sphere.

Renormalization schemes for SFT solutions

In this paper, we examine the space of renormalization schemes compatible with the Kiermaier and Okawa [arXiv:0707.4472] framework for constructing Open String Field Theory solutions based on marginal operators with singular self-OPEs. We show that, due to freedom in defining the renormalization scheme which tames these singular OPEs, the solutions obtained from the KO framework are not necessarily unique. We identify a multidimensional space of SFT solutions corresponding to a single given marginal operator.

Holographic entanglement entropy in nonlocal theories

We compute holographic entanglement entropy in two strongly coupled nonlocal field theories: the dipole and the noncommutative deformations of SYM theory. We find that entanglement entropy in the dipole theory follows a volume law for regions smaller than the length scale of nonlocality and has a smooth cross-over to an area law for larger regions. In contrast, in the noncommutative theory the entanglement entropy follows a volume law for up to a critical length scale at which a phase transition to an area law occurs. The critical length scale increases as the UV cutoff is raised, which is indicative of UV/IR mixing and implies that entanglement entropy in the noncommutative theory follows a volume law for arbitrary large regions when the size of the region is fixed as the UV cutoff is removed to infinity. Comparison of behaviour between these two theories allows us to explain the origin of the volume law. Since our holographic duals are not asymptotically AdS, minimal area surfaces used to compute holographic entanglement entropy have novel behaviours near the boundary of the dual spacetime. We discuss implications of our results on the scrambling (thermalization) behaviour of these nonlocal field theories.

Noncommutative Geometry of Multicore Bions

We find new BPS solutions to the nonabelian theory on a world-volume of parallel D1-branes. Our solutions describe two parallel, separated bundles of N D1-branes expanding out to form a single orthogonal D3-brane. This configuration corresponds to two charge N magnetic monopoles in the world-volume of a single D3-brane, deforming the D3-brane into two parallel spikes. We obtain the emergent surface corresponding to our nonabelian D1-brane configuration and demonstrate, at finite N, a surprisingly accurate agreement with the shape of the D3-brane world-volume as obtained from the abelian Born-Infeld action. Our solution provides an explicit realization of topology change in noncommutative geometry at finite N.

Rindler Quantum Gravity

In this note, we explain how asymptotically globally AdS spacetimes can be given an alternate dual description as entangled states of a pair of hyperbolic space CFTs, which are associated with complementary Rindler wedges of the AdS geometry. The reduced density matrix encoding the state of the degrees of freedom in one of these CFTs describes the physics in a single wedge, which we can think of as the region of spacetime accessible to an accelerated observer in AdS. For pure AdS, this density matrix is thermal, and we argue that the microstates in this thermal ensemble correspond to spacetimes that are almost indistinguishable from a Rindler wedge of pure AdS away from the horizon, but with the horizon replaced by some kind of singularity where the geometrical description breaks down. This alternate description of AdS, based on patches associated with particular observers, may give insight into the holographic description of cosmologies where no observer has access to the full spacetime.

SFT on separated D-branes and D-brane translation

We discuss novel properties of the string field and the Open String Field Theory action arising in a system with multiple D-branes, then use the level truncation scheme to study marginal deformations and tachyon condensation in a system with two parallel but separated branes. We find string fields corresponding to D-brane decay combined with a finite change in the distance between the two D-branes. Using D-brane separation as a yardstick, we are able to continuously control the spacetime displacement of the D-branes and find that our solutions exist only for a finite range of this displacement. Thus, at least in level truncation, Open String Field Theory seems unable to describe the entire CFT moduli space.

The Gravity Dual of a Density Matrix

For a state in a quantum field theory on some spacetime, we can associate a density matrix to any subset of a given spacelike slice by tracing out the remaining degrees of freedom. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, if the original state has a dual bulk spacetime with a good classical description, it is natural to ask how much information about the bulk spacetime is carried by the density matrix for such a subset of field theory degrees of freedom. In this note, we provide several constraints on the largest region that can be fully reconstructed, and discuss specific proposals for the geometric construction of this dual region.

Comments on k-Strings at Large N

We present a computation of the k-string tension in the large N limit of the two dimensional lattice Yang-Mills theory. It is well known that the problems of computing the partition function and the Wilson loop can be both reduced to a unitary matrix integral which has a third order phase transition separating weak and strong coupling. We give an explicit computation of the interaction energy for k-strings in the large N limit when k/N is held constant and non-zero. In this limit, the interaction energy is finite and attractive. We show that, in the strong coupling phase, the k -> N - k duality is realized as a first order phase transition. We also show that the lattice k-string tension reduces to the expected Casimir scaling in the continuum limit.

Large Representation Recurrences in Large N Random Unitary Matrix Models

In a random unitary matrix model at large N, we study the properties of the expectation value of the character of the unitary matrix in the rank k symmetric tensor representation. We address the problem of whether the standard semiclassical technique for solving the model in the large N limit can be applied when the representation is very large, with k of order N. We find that the eigenvalues do indeed localize on an extremum of the effective potential; however, for finite but sufficiently large k/N, it is not possible to replace the discrete eigenvalue density with a continuous one. Nonetheless, the expectation value of the character has a well-defined large N limit, and when the discreteness of the eigenvalues is properly accounted for, it shows an intriguing approximate periodicity as a function of k/N.

Hot Giant Loop Holography

We argue that there is a phase transition in the expectation value of the Polyakov loop operator in the large N limit of the high temperature deconfined phase of N=4 Yang-Mills theory on a spatial S^3. It occurs for large completely symmetric representation of the SU(N) symmetry group. We speculate that this transition is reflected in the string theory dual as a critical behavior of the D3-brane duals of large representation loops.

Into the bulk: reconstructing spacetime from the c=1 matrix model

We write down exact solutions in the collective field theory of the c=1 matrix model and in dilaton-gravity coupled to a massless scalar. Using the known correspondence between these two theories at the null boundaries of spacetime, we make a connection between scalar fields in these two theories in the bulk of spacetime. In the process, we gain insight into how a theory containing gravity can be equivalent to one without gravity. We analyze a simple time-dependent background as an example.

Nonlocal Field Theories and their Gravity Duals

The gravity duals of nonlocal field theories in the large N limit exhibit a novel behavior near the boundary. To explore this, we present and study the duals of dipole theories - a particular class of nonlocal theories with fundamental dipole fields. The nonlocal interactions are manifest in the metric of the gravity dual and type-0 string theories make a surprising appearance. We compare the situation to that in noncommutative SYM.
