Desingularization of 3D steady Euler equation with helical symmetry

In this paper, we study desingularization of steady solutions of 3D incompressible Euler equation with helical symmetry in a general helical domain. We construct a family of steady Euler flows with helical symmetry, such that the associated vorticities tend asymptotically to a helical vortex filament. The solutions are obtained by solving a semilinear elliptic problem in divergence form with a parameter. By using the stream-function method, we show the existence and asymptotic behavior of ground state solutions concentrating near a single point as the parameter $ \varepsilon\to 0 $. Qualitative properties of those solutions are also discussed.

Helical vortices with small cross-section for 3D incompressible Euler equation

In this article, we construct traveling-rotating helical vortices with small cross-section to the 3D incompressible Euler equations in an infinite pipe, which tend asymptotically to singular helical vortex filament evolved by the binormal curvature flow. The construction is based on studying a general semilinear elliptic problem in divergence form \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\varepsilon^2\text{div}(K(x)\nabla u)= (u-q|\ln\varepsilon|)^{p}_+,\ \ &x\in Ω,\\ u=0,\ \ &x\in\partial Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} for small values of $ \varepsilon. $ Helical vortex solutions concentrating near several helical filaments with polygonal symmetry are also constructed.

Local uniqueness of vortices for 2D steady Euler flow in a bounded domain

We study the 2D Euler equation in a bounded simply-connected domain, and establish the local uniqueness of flow whose stream function $ψ_\varepsilon$ satisfies \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\varepsilon^2Δψ_\varepsilon=\sum\limits_{i=1}^k \mathbf1_{B_δ(z_{0,i})}(ψ_\varepsilon-μ_{\varepsilon,i})_+^γ,\ \ \ & \text{in} \ Ω, ψ_\varepsilon=0,\ \ \ & \text{on} \ Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} with $\varepsilon\to 0^+$ the scale parameter of vortices, $γ\in(0,\infty)$, $Ω\subset \mathbb R^2$ a bounded simply connected Lipschitz domain, $z_{0,i}\inΩ$ the limiting location of $i^{\text{th}}$ vortex, and $μ_{\varepsilon,i}$ the flux constants unprescribed. Our proof is achieved by a detailed description of asymptotic behavior for $ψ_\varepsilon$ and Pohozaev identity technique. For $k=1$, we prove the nonlinear stability of corresponding vorticity in $L^p$ norm, provided $z_{0,1}$ is a non-degenerate minimum point of Robin function. This stability result can be generalized to the case $k\ge 2$, and $(z_{0,1},\cdots,z_{0,k})\in Ω^k$ being a non-degenerate minimum point of the Kirchhoff-Routh function.

Traveling vortex pairs for 2D Boussinesq equations

In this paper, we study the existence and asymptotic properties of the traveling vortex pairs for the two-dimensional inviscid incompressible Boussinesq equations. We construct a family of traveling vorticity pairs, which constitutes the de-singularization of a pair of point vortices with equal intensity but opposite sign. Using the improved vorticity method, we also give limiting position of the supports of vorticities.

Existence and regularity of co-rotating and travelling global solutions for the generalized SQG equation

By studying the linearization of contour dynamics equation and using implicit function theorem, we prove the existence of co-rotating and travelling global solutions for the gSQG equation, which extends the result of Hmidi and Mateu \cite{HM} to $α\in[1,2)$. Moreover, we prove the $C^\infty$ regularity of vortices boundary, and show the convexity of each vortices component.

Existence of stationary vortex sheets for the 2D Euler equation

We investigate a steady planar flow of an ideal fluid in a (bounded or unbounded) domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$. Let $κ_i\not=0$, $i=1,\ldots, m$, be $m$ arbitrary fixed constants. For any given non-degenerate critical point $\mathbf{x}_0=(x_{0,1},\ldots,x_{0,m})$ of the Kirchhoff-Routh function defined on $Ω^m$ corresponding to $(κ_1,\ldots, κ_m)$, we construct a family of stationary planar flows with vortex sheets that have large vorticity amplitude and are perturbations of small circles centered near $x_i$, $i=1,\ldots,m$. The proof is accomplished via the implicit function theorem with suitable choice of function spaces. This seems to be the first nontrivial result on the existence of stationary vortex sheets in domains.

Global solutions for the generalized SQG equation and rearrangements

In this paper, we study the existence of rotating and traveling-wave solutions for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (gSQG) equation. The solutions are obtained by maximization of the energy over the set of rearrangements of a fixed function. The rotating solutions take the form of co-rotating vortices with $N$-fold symmetry. The traveling-wave solutions take the form of translating vortex pairs. Moreover, these solutions constitute the desingularization of co-rotating $N$ point vortices and counter-rotating pairs. Some other quantitative properties are also established.

On the standing waves for the X-ray free electron laser Schrödinger equation

In this paper, we are concerned with the standing waves for the following nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$i\partial_{t}ψ=-Δψ+b^2(x_1^2+x_2^2)ψ+\frac{λ_1}{|x|}ψ+ λ_2(|\cdot|^{-1}\ast |ψ|^2)ψ- λ_3|ψ|^p ψ,~~~ (t,x)\in \mathbb{R}^+\times \mathbb{R}^3,$$ where $0<p<4$. We mainly study the existence and stability/instability properties of standing waves for this equation, in two cases: the first one is that no magnetic potential is involved, (i.e. $b=0$ in the equation) and the second one is that $b\neq 0$. To be precise, in the first case, by considering a minimization problem on a suitable Pohozaev manifold we prove the existence of ground states, and show further that all ground state standing waves are strongly unstable by blow-up in finite time. Moreover, by making use of the ideas of their proofs, we are able to prove the existence and instability of normalized solutions, whose proofs seem to be new, compared with the studies of normalized solutions in the existing literature. In the second case, the situation is more difficult to be treated, due to the additional term of the partial harmonic potential. We manage to prove the existence of stable standing waves for $p\in (0,4)$ and with some assumptions on the coefficients, where solutions are obtained as global minimizers if $p\in (0,\frac{4}{3}]$, and as local minimizers if $p\in [\frac{4}{3}, 4)$. In the mass-critical and supercritical cases $p\in [\frac{4}{3}, 4)$, we establish the variational characterization of the ground states on a suitable manifold which is different from the one neither of the Nehari type nor of the Pohozaev type, and then prove the existence of ground states. Finally under some assumptions on $ω$ and $p$, we prove that the ground state standing waves are strongly unstable.

On desingularization of steady vortex in the lake equations

We constructed a family of steady vortex solutions for the lake equations with general vorticity function, which constitute a desingularization of a singular vortex. The precise localization of the asymptotic singular vortex is shown to be the deepest position of the lake. We also study global nonlinear stability for these solutions. Some qualitative and asymptotic properties are also established.

Standing waves with prescribed mass for the Schrödinger equations with van der Waals type potentials

\begin{abstract} In this paper, we focus on the standing waves with prescribed mass for the Schrödinger equations with van der Waals type potentials, that is, two-body potentials with different width. This leads to the study of the following nonlocal elliptic equation \begin{equation*}\label{1} -Δu=λu+μ(|x|^{-α}\ast|u|^{2})u+(|x|^{-β}\ast|u|^{2})u,\ \ x\in \R^{N} \end{equation*} under the normalized constraint \[\int_{{\mathbb{R}^N}} {{u}^2}=c>0,\] where $N\geq 3$, $μ\!>\!0$, $α$, $β\in (0,N)$, and the frequency $λ\in \mathbb{R}$ is unknown and appears as Lagrange multiplier. Compared with the well studied case $α=β$, the solution set of the above problem with different width of two body potentials $α\neqβ$ is much richer. Under different assumptions on $c$, $α$ and $β$, we prove several existence, multiplicity and asymptotic behavior of solutions to the above problem. In addition, the stability of the corresponding standing waves for the related time-dependent problem is discussed.

The number of positive solutions to the Brezis-Nirenberg problem

In this paper we are concerned with the well-known Brezis-Nirenberg problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu= u^{\frac{N+2}{N-2}}+\varepsilon u, &{\text{in}~Ω},\\ u>0, &{\text{in}~Ω},\\ u=0, &{\text{on}~\partial Ω}. \end{cases} \end{equation*} The existence of multi-peak solutions to the above problem for small $\varepsilon>0$ was obtained by Musso and Pistoia. However, the uniqueness or the exact number of positive solutions to the above problem is still unknown. Here we focus on the local uniqueness of multi-peak solutions and the exact number of positive solutions to the above problem for small $\varepsilon>0$. By using various local Pohozaev identities and blow-up analysis, we first detect the relationship between the profile of the blow-up solutions and the Green's function of the domain $Ω$ and then obtain a type of local uniqueness results of blow-up solutions. At last we give a description of the number of positive solutions for small positive $\varepsilon$, which depends also on the Green's function.

Existence of solution to parabolic equations with mixed boundary condition on non-cylindrical domain

In this paper we are concerned with the initial boundary value problems of linear and semi-linear parabolic equations with mixed boundary conditions on non-cylindrical domains in spatial-temporal space. We obtain the existence of a weak solution to the problem. In the case of the linear equation the parts for every type of boundary condition are any open subsets of the boundary being nonempty the part for Dirichlet condition at any time. Due to this it is difficult to reduce the problem to one on a cylindrical domain by diffeomorphism of the domain. By a transformation of unknown function and penalty method we connect the problem to a monotone operator equation for functions defined on the non-cylindrical domain. In this way a semilinear problem is considered when the part of boundary for Dirichlet condition is cylindrical.

Non-stationary Navier-Stokes Equations with Mixed Boundary Conditions

In this paper we are concerned with the initial boundary value problem of the 2, 3-D Navier-Stokes equations with mixed boundary conditions including conditions for velocity, static pressure, stress, rotation and Navier slip condition together. Under a compatibility condition at the initial instance it is proved that for the small data there exists a unique solution on the given interval of time. Also, it is proved that if a solution is given, then there exists a unique solution for small perturbed data satisfying the compatibility condition. Our smoothness condition for initial functions in the compatibility condition is weaker than one in such a previous result.

The steady Navier-Stokes and Stokes systems with mixed boundary conditions including one-sided leaks and pressure

In this paper we are concerned with the steady Navier-Stokes and Stokes problems with mixed boundary conditions involving Tresca slip, leak condition, one-sided leak conditions, velocity, pressure, rotation, stress and normal derivative of velocity together. Relying on the relations among strain, rotation, normal derivative of velocity and shape of boundary surface, we have variational formulations for the problems, which consist of five formulae with five unknowns. We get the variational inequalities equivalent to the formulated variational problems, which have one unknown. Then, we study the corresponding variational inequalities and relying the results for variational inequalities, we get existence, uniqueness and estimates of solutions to the Navier-Stokes and Stokes problems with the boundary conditions. Our estimates for solutions do not depend on the thresholds for slip and leaks.

Uniqueness of positive bound states with multi-bump for nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We are concerned with the following nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$-\varepsilon^2Δu+ V(x)u=|u|^{p-2}u,~u\in H^1(\R^N),$$ where $N\geq 3$, $2<p<\frac{2N}{N-2}$. For $\varepsilon$ small enough and a class of $V(x)$, we show the uniqueness of positive multi-bump solutions concentrating at $k$ different critical points of $V(x)$ under certain assumptions on asymptotic behavior of $V(x)$ and its first derivatives near those points. The degeneracy of critical points is allowed in this paper.

Multiple Vortices for the Shallow Water Equation

In this paper, we construct stationary classical solutions of the shallow water equation with vanishing Froude number $Fr$ in the so-called lake model. To this end we need to study solutions to the following semilinear elliptic problem \[{cases} -\varepsilon^2\text{div}(\frac{\nabla u}{b})=b(u-q\log\frac{1}{\varepsilon})_+^{p},& \text{in}\; Ω, u=0, &\text{on}\;\partial Ω, {cases} \] for small $\varepsilon>0$, where $p>1$, $\text{div}(\frac{\nabla q}{b})=0$ and $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ is a smooth bounded domain,. We showed that if $\frac{q^2}{b}$ has $m$ strictly local minimum(maximum) points $\bar z_i,\,i=1,...,m$, then there is a stationary classical solution approximating stationary $m$ points vortex solution of shallow water equations with vorticity $\sum_{i=1}^m\frac{2πq(\bar z_i)}{b(\bar z_i)}$. Moreover, strictly local minimum points of $\frac{q^2}{b}$ on the boundary can also give vortex solutions for the shallow water equation. As a further study we construct vortex pair solutions as well. Existence and asymptotic behavior of single point non-vanishing vortex solutions were studied by S. De Valeriola and J. Van Schaftingen.

Continuous Dependence of Cauchy Problem For Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation in $H^{s}$

We consider the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i \partial_{t}u+ Δu=λ_{0}u+λ_{1}|u|^αu$ in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, where $λ_{0},λ_{1}\in\mathbb{C}$, in $H^s$ subcritical and critical case: $0<α\leq\frac{4}{N-2s}$ when $1<s<\frac{N}{2}$ and $0<α<+\infty$ when $s\geq\frac{N}{2}$. We show that the solution depends continuously on the initial value in the standard sense in $H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^{N})$ if $α$ satisfies certain assumptions.

Regularization of point vortices for the Euler equation in dimension two

In this paper, we construct stationary classical solutions of the incompressible Euler equation approximating singular stationary solutions of this equation. This procedure is carried out by constructing solutions to the following elliptic problem [ -\ep^2 Δu=(u-q-\fracκ{2π}\ln\frac{1}{\ep})_+^p, \quad & x\inΩ, u=0, \quad & x\in\partialΩ, ] where $p>1$, $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ is a bounded domain, $q$ is a harmonic function. We showed that if $Ω$ is simply-connected smooth domain, then for any given non-degenerate critical point of Kirchhoff-Routh function $\mathcal{W}(x_1,...,x_m)$ with the same strength $κ>0$, there is a stationary classical solution approximating stationary $m$ points vortex solution of incompressible Euler equations with vorticity $mκ$. Existence and asymptotic behavior of single point non-vanishing vortex solutions were studied by D. Smets and J. Van Schaftingen (2010).

Regularization of point vortices for the Euler equation in dimension two, part II

In this paper, we continue to construct stationary classical solutions of the incompressible Euler equation approximating singular stationary solutions of this equation. This procedure now is carried out by constructing solutions to the following elliptic problem \[ {cases} -\ep^2 Δu=(u-q-\fracκ{2π}\ln\frac{1}{\ep})_+^p-(q-\fracκ{2π}\ln\frac{1}{\ep}-u)_+^p, \quad & x\inΩ, u=0, \quad & x\in\partialΩ, {cases} \] where $p>1$, $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ is a bounded domain, $q$ is a harmonic function. We showed that if $Ω$ is a simply-connected smooth domain, then for any given non-degenerate critical point of Kirchhoff-Routh function $\mathcal{W}(x_1^+,...,x_m^+,x_1^-,...,x_n^-)$ with $κ^+_i=κ>0\,(i=1,...,m)$ and $κ^-_j=-κ\,(j=1,...,n)$, there is a stationary classical solution approximating stationary $m+n$ points vortex solution of incompressible Euler equations with total vorticity $(m-n)κ$.

Divergent solutions to the 5D Hartree Equations

We consider the Cauchy problem for the focusing Hartree equation $iu_{t}+Δu+(|\cdot|^{-3}\ast|u|^{2})u=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^{5}$ with the initial data in $H^1$, and study the divergent property of infinite-variance and nonradial solutions. Letting $Q$ be the ground state solution of $-Q+ΔQ+(|\cdot|^{-3}\ast|Q|^{2})Q=0 $ in $ \mathbb{R}^{5}$, we prove that if $u_{0}\in H^{1}$ satisfying $M(u_0) E(u_0)<M(Q) E(Q)$ and $\|\nabla u_{0}\|_{2}\|u_{0}\|_{2} >\|\nabla Q\|_{2}\|Q\|_{2} ,$ then the corresponding solution $u(t)$ either blows up in finite forward time, or exists globally for positive time and there exists a time sequence $t_{n}\rightarrow+\infty$ such that $\|\nabla u(t_{n})\|_{2}\rightarrow+\infty.$ A similar result holds for negative time.
