Weak convergence of multivariate partial maxima processes

For a strictly stationary sequence of $\mathbb{R}_{+}^{d}$--valued random vectors we derive functional convergence of partial maxima stochastic processes under joint regular variation and weak dependence conditions. The limit process is an extremal process and the convergence takes place in the space of $\mathbb{R}_{+}^{d}$--valued càdlàg functions on $[0,1]$, with the Skorohod weak $M_{1}$ topology. We also show that this topology in general can not be replaced by the stronger (standard) $M_{1}$ topology. The theory is illustrated on three examples, including the multivariate squared GARCH process with constant conditional correlations.

Functional weak convergence of partial maxima processes

For a strictly stationary sequence of nonnegative regularly varying random variables $(X_{n})$ we study functional weak convergence of partial maxima processes $M_{n}(t) = \bigvee_{i=1}^{\lfloor nt \rfloor}X_{i},\,t \in [0,1]$ in the space $D[0,1]$ with the Skorohod $J_{1}$ topology. Under the strong mixing condition, we give sufficient conditions for such convergence when clustering of large values do not occur. We apply this result to stochastic volatility processes. Further we give conditions under which the regular variation property is a necessary condition for $J_{1}$ and $M_{1}$ functional convergences in the case of weak dependence. We also prove that strong mixing implies the so-called Condition $\mathcal{A}(a_{n})$ with the time component.

Weak convergence of partial maxima processes in the $M_{1}$ topology

It is known that for a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables $(X_{n})$ the regular variation condition is equivalent to weak convergence of partial maxima $M_{n}= \max\{X_{1}, \ldots, X_{n}\}$, appropriately scaled. A functional version of this is known to be true as well, the limit process being an extremal process, and the convergence takes place in the space of càdlàg functions endowed with the Skorohod $J_{1}$ topology. We first show that weak convergence of partial maxima $M_{n}$ holds also for a class of weakly dependent sequences under the joint regular variation condition. Then using this result we obtain a corresponding functional version for the processes of partial maxima $M_{n}(t) = \bigvee_{i=1}^{\lfloor nt \rfloor}X_{i},\,t \in [0,1]$, but with respect to the Skorohod $M_{1}$ topology, which is weaker than the more usual $J_{1}$ topology. We also show that the $M_{1}$ convergence generally can not be replaced by the $J_{1}$ convergence. Applications of our main results to moving maxima, squared GARCH and ARMAX processes are also given.

A Multivariate Functional Limit Theorem in Weak M1 Topology

We show a new functional limit theorem for weakly dependent regularly varying sequences of random vectors. As it turns out, the convergence takes place in the space of R^d valued càdlàg functions endowed with the so-called weak M1 topology. The theory is illustrated on two examples. In particular, we demonstrate why such an extension of Skorohod's M1 topology is actually necessary for the limit theorem to hold.

A functional limit theorem for dependent sequences with infinite variance stable limits

Under an appropriate regular variation condition, the affinely normalized partial sums of a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables converges weakly to a non-Gaussian stable random variable. A functional version of this is known to be true as well, the limit process being a stable Lévy process. The main result in the paper is that for a stationary, regularly varying sequence for which clusters of high-threshold excesses can be broken down into asymptotically independent blocks, the properly centered partial sum process still converges to a stable Lévy process. Due to clustering, the Lévy triple of the limit process can be different from the one in the independent case. The convergence takes place in the space of càdlàg functions endowed with Skorohod's $M_1$ topology, the more usual $J_1$ topology being inappropriate as the partial sum processes may exhibit rapid successions of jumps within temporal clusters of large values, collapsing in the limit to a single jump. The result rests on a new limit theorem for point processes which is of independent interest. The theory is applied to moving average processes, squared GARCH(1,1) processes and stochastic volatility models.

A limit theorem for moving averages in the α-stable domain of attraction

In the early 1990's, Avram and Taqqu showed that regularly varying moving average processes with all coefficients nonnegative and the tail index strictly between 0 and 2 satisfy functional limit theorem. They also conjectured that an equivalent statement holds under a certain less restrictive assumption on the coefficients, but in a different topology on the space of cádlág functions. We give a proof of this result.
