Intermittency in the small-time behavior of Lévy processes

In this paper we consider convergence of moments in the small-time limit theorems for Lévy processes. We provide precise asymptotics for all the absolute moments of positive order. The convergence of moments in limit theorems holds typically only up to some critical moment order and higher order moments decay at different rate. Such behavior is known as intermittency and has been encountered in some limit theorems.

Multifractal processes: Definition, properties and new examples

We investigate stochastic processes possessing scale invariance properties which we refer to as multifractal processes. The examples of such processes known so far do not go much beyond the original cascade construction of Mandelbrot. We provide a new definition of the multifractal process by generalizing the definition of the self-similar process. We establish general properties of these processes and show how existing examples fit into our setting. Finally, we define a new class of examples inspired by the idea of Lamperti transformation. Namely, for any pair of infinitely divisible distribution and a stationary process one can construct a multifractal process.

Intermittency of Superpositions of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Type Processes

The phenomenon of intermittency has been widely discussed in physics literature. This paper provides a model of intermittency based on Lévy driven Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) type processes. Discrete superpositions of these processes can be constructed to incorporate non-Gaussian marginal distributions and long or short range dependence. While the partial sums of finite superpositions of OU type processes obey the central limit theorem, we show that the partial sums of a large class of infinite long range dependent superpositions are intermittent. We discuss the property of intermittency and behavior of the cumulants for the superpositions of OU type processes.

Bounds on the support of the multifractal spectrum of stochastic processes

Multifractal analysis of stochastic processes deals with the fine scale properties of the sample paths and seeks for some global scaling property that would enable extracting the so-called spectrum of singularities. In this paper we establish bounds on the support of the spectrum of singularities. To do this, we prove a theorem that complements the famous Kolmogorov's continuity criterion. The nature of these bounds helps us identify the quantities truly responsible for the support of the spectrum. We then make several conclusions from this. First, specifying global scaling in terms of moments is incomplete due to possible infinite moments, both of positive and negative order. For the case of ergodic self-similar processes we show that negative order moments and their divergence do not affect the spectrum. On the other hand, infinite positive order moments make the spectrum nontrivial. In particular, we show that the self-similar stationary increments process with the nontrivial spectrum must be heavy-tailed. This shows that for determining the spectrum it is crucial to capture the divergence of moments. We show that the partition function is capable of doing this and also propose a robust variant of this method for negative order moments.

Asymptotic Properties of the Partition Function and Applications in Tail Index Inference of Heavy-Tailed Data

The so-called partition function is a sample moment statistic based on blocks of data and it is often used in the context of multifractal processes. It will be shown that its behaviour is strongly influenced by the tail of the distribution underlying the data either in i.i.d. and weakly dependent cases. These results will be exploited to develop graphical and estimation methods for the tail index of a distribution. The performance of the tools proposed is analyzed and compared with other methods by means of simulations and examples.
