Mean field equations and domains of first kind

In this paper we are interested in understanding the structure of domains of first and second kind, a concept motivated by problems in statistical mechanics. We prove some openness property for domains of first kind with respect to a suitable topology, as well as some sufficient condition for a simply connected domain to be of first kind in terms of the Fourier coefficients of the Riemann map. Finally, we show that the set of simply connected domains of first kind is contractible.

Local uniqueness and non-degeneracy of blow up solutions of mean field equations with singular data

We are concerned with the mean field equation with singular data on bounded domains. Under suitable non-degeneracy conditions we prove local uniqueness and non-degeneracy of bubbling solutions blowing up at singular points. The proof is based on sharp estimates for bubbling solutions of singular mean field equations and suitably defined Pohozaev-type identities.

Mean field equations on tori: existence and uniqueness of evenly symmetric blow-up solutions

We are concerned with the blow-up analysis of mean field equations. It has been proven in [6] that solutions blowing-up at the same non-degenerate blow-up set are unique. On the other hand, the authors in [18] show that solutions with a degenerate blow-up set are in general non-unique. In this paper we first prove that evenly symmetric solutions on a flat torus with a degenerate two-point blow-up set are unique. In the second part of the paper we complete the analysis by proving the existence of such blow-up solutions by using a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method. Moreover, we deduce that all evenly symmetric blow-up solutions come from one-point blow-up solutions of the mean field equation on a "half" torus.

Global bifurcation analysis of mean field equations and the Onsager microcanonical description of two-dimensional turbulence

On strictly starshaped domains of second kind we find natural sufficient conditions which allow the solution of two long standing open problems closely related to the mean field equation $\prl$ below. On one side we catch the global behaviour of the Entropy for the mean field Microcanonical Variational Principle ((MVP) for short) arising in the Onsager description of two-dimensional turbulence. This is the completion of well known results first established in Caglioti et al. Comm.Math.Phys. (1995). Among other things we find a full unbounded interval of strict convexity of the Entropy. On the other side, to achieve this goal, we have to provide a detailed qualitative description of the global branch of solutions of $\prl$ emanating from $\lm=0$ and crossing $\lm=8π$. This is the completion of well known results first established in Suzuki A.I.H.P. (1992) and Chang et al. New Stud. Adv. Math. (2003) for $\lm\leq 8π$, and it has an independent mathematical interest, since global branches of semilinear elliptic equations, with very few well known exceptions, are poorly understood. The (MVP) suggests the right variable (which is the energy) to be used to obtain a global parametrization of solutions of $\prl$. A crucial spectral simplification is obtained by using the fact that, by definition, solutions of the (MVP) maximize the entropy at fixed energy and total vorticity.

Asymptotic analysis of solutions to a gauged O(3) sigma model

We analyze an elliptic equation arising in the study of the gauged O(3) sigma model with the Chern-Simons term. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions and apply it to prove the uniqueness of stable solutions. However, one of the features of this nonlinear equation is the existence of stable nontopological solutions in $\RN$, which implies the possibility that a stable solution which blows up at a vortex point exists. To exclude this kind of blow up behavior is one of the main difficulties which we have to overcome.

Supercritical Mean Field Equations on convex domains and the Onsager's statistical description of two-dimensional turbulence

We are motivated by the study of the Microcanonical Variational Principle within the Onsager's description of two-dimensional turbulence in the range of energies where the equivalence of statistical ensembles fails. We obtain sufficient conditions for the existence and multiplicity of solutions for the corresponding Mean Field Equation on convex and "thin" enough domains in the supercritical (with respect to the Moser-Trudinger inequality) regime. This is a brand new achievement since existence results in the supercritical region were previously known \un{only} on multiply connected domains. Then we study the structure of these solutions by the analysis of their linearized problems and also obtain a new uniqueness result for solutions of the Mean Field Equation on thin domains whose energy is uniformly bounded from above. Finally we evaluate the asymptotic expansion of those solutions with respect to the thinning parameter and use it together with all the results obtained so far to solve the Microcanonical Variational Principle in a small range of supercritical energies where the entropy is eventually shown to be concave.

An improved geometric inequality via vanishing moments, with applications to singular Liouville equations

We consider a class of singular Liouville equations on compact surfaces motivated by the study of Electroweak and Self-Dual Chern-Simons theories, the Gaussian curvature prescription with conical singularities and Onsager's description of turbulence. We analyse the problem of existence variationally, and show how the angular distribution of the conformal volume near the singularities may lead to improvements in the Moser-Trudinger inequality, and in turn to lower bounds on the Euler-Lagrange functional. We then discuss existence and non-existence results.

Existence and uniqueness for Mean Field Equations on multiply connected domains at the critical parameter

We consider the mean field equation: (1) Δu+ρ\frac{e^u}{\int_Ωe^u}=0 & \hbox{in} \;Ω, u=0 & \hbox{on}\;\partialΩ, where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ is an open and bounded domain of class $C^1$. In his 1992 paper, Suzuki proved that if $Ω$ is a simply-connected domain, then equation (1) admits a unique solution for $ρ\in[0,8π)$. This result for $Ω$ a simply-connected domain has been extended to the case $ρ=8π$ by Chang, Chen and the second author. However, the uniqueness result for $Ω$ a multiply-connected domain has remained a long standing open problem which we solve positively here for $ρ\in[0,8π]$. To obtain this result we need a new version of the classical Bol's inequality suitable to be applied on multiply-connected domains. Our second main concern is the existence of solutions for (1) when $ρ=8π$. We a obtain necessary and sufficient condition for the solvability of the mean field equation at $ρ=8π$ which is expressed in terms of the Robin's function $γ$ for $Ω$. For example, if equation (1) has no solution at $ρ=8π$, then $γ$ has a unique nondegenerate maximum point. As a by product of our results we solve the long-standing open problem of the equivalence of canonical and microcanonical ensembles in the Onsager's statistical description of two-dimensional turbulence on multiply-connected domains.
