Extreme values of Hecke $L$-functions to angular characters

Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic number field and let $L(s,ξ_{\ell})$ denote the Hecke $L$-function to an angular character $ξ_{\ell}$ with frequency $\ell$. We detect values of $\log |L(\tfrac12,ξ_{\ell})|$ with size at least $(\sqrt{2} + o_K(1))(\log X / \log \log X)^{1/2}$ along each dyadic range $X \leqslant \ell \leqslant 2X$. This result relies on the resonance method, which is applied for the first time to this family of $L$-functions, where the classification and extraction of diagonal terms depends on the geometry of the complex embedding of $K$.

Spin-layer locking of interlayer excitons trapped in moiré potentials

Van der Waals heterostructures offer attractive opportunities to design quantum materials. For instance, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess three quantum degrees of freedom: spin, valley index, and layer index. Further, twisted TMD heterobilayers can form moiré patterns that modulate the electronic band structure according to atomic registry, leading to spatial confinement of interlayer exciton (IXs). Here we report the observation of spin-layer locking of IXs trapped in moiré potentials formed in a heterostructure of bilayer 2H-MoSe$_2$ and monolayer WSe$_2$. The phenomenon of locked electron spin and layer index leads to two quantum-confined IX species with distinct spin-layer-valley configurations. Furthermore, we observe that the atomic registries of the moiré trapping sites in the three layers are intrinsically locked together due to the 2H-type stacking characteristic of bilayer TMDs. These results identify the layer index as a useful degree of freedom to engineer tunable few-level quantum systems in two-dimensional heterostructures.

On Primitive Covering Numbers

In 2007, Zhi-Wei Sun defined a \emph{covering number} to be a positive integer $L$ such that there exists a covering system of the integers where the moduli are distinct divisors of $L$ greater than 1. A covering number $L$ is called \emph{primitive} if no proper divisor of $L$ is a covering number. Sun constructed an infinite set $\mathcal L$ of primitive covering numbers, and he conjectured that every primitive covering number must satisfy a certain condition. In this paper, for a given $L\in \mathcal L$, we derive a formula that gives the exact number of coverings that have $L$ as the least common multiple of the set $M$ of moduli, under certain restrictions on $M$. Additionally, we disprove Sun's conjecture by constructing an infinite set of primitive covering numbers that do not satisfy his primitive covering number condition.
