A Comparison of Self-Play Algorithms Under a Generalized Framework

Throughout scientific history, overarching theoretical frameworks have allowed researchers to grow beyond personal intuitions and culturally biased theories. They allow to verify and replicate existing findings, and to link is connected results. The notion of self-play, albeit often cited in multiagent Reinforcement Learning, has never been grounded in a formal model. We present a formalized framework, with clearly defined assumptions, which encapsulates the meaning of self-play as abstracted from various existing self-play algorithms. This framework is framed as an approximation to a theoretical solution concept for multiagent training. On a simple environment, we qualitatively measure how well a subset of the captured self-play methods approximate this solution when paired with the famous PPO algorithm. We also provide insights on interpreting quantitative metrics of performance for self-play training. Our results indicate that, throughout training, various self-play definitions exhibit cyclic policy evolutions.

Nonlinear Evolution via Spatially-Dependent Linear Dynamics for Electrophysiology and Calcium Data

Latent variable models have been widely applied for the analysis of time series resulting from experimental neuroscience techniques. In these datasets, observations are relatively smooth and possibly nonlinear. We present Variational Inference for Nonlinear Dynamics (VIND), a variational inference framework that is able to uncover nonlinear, smooth latent dynamics from sequential data. The framework is a direct extension of PfLDS; including a structured approximate posterior describing spatially-dependent linear dynamics, as well as an algorithm that relies on the fixed-point iteration method to achieve convergence. We apply VIND to electrophysiology, single-cell voltage and widefield imaging datasets with state-of-the-art results in reconstruction error. In single-cell voltage data, VIND finds a 5D latent space, with variables akin to those of Hodgkin-Huxley-like models. VIND's learned dynamics are further quantified by predicting future neural activity. VIND excels in this task, in some cases substantially outperforming current methods.

New Chiral Fermions, a New Gauge Interaction, Dirac Neutrinos, and Dark Matter

We propose that all light fermionic degrees of freedom, including the Standard Model (SM) fermions and all possible light beyond-the-standard-model fields, are chiral with respect to some spontaneously broken abelian gauge symmetry. Hypercharge, for example, plays this role for the SM fermions. We introduce a new symmetry, $U(1)_ν$, for all new light fermionic states. Anomaly cancellations mandate the existence of several new fermion fields with nontrivial $U(1)_ν$ charges. We develop a concrete model of this type, for which we show that (i) some fermions remain massless after $U(1)_ν$ breaking -- similar to SM neutrinos -- and (ii) accidental global symmetries translate into stable massive particles -- similar to SM protons. These ingredients provide a solution to the dark matter and neutrino mass puzzles assuming one also postulates the existence of heavy degrees of freedom that act as "mediators" between the two sectors. The neutrino mass mechanism described here leads to parametrically small Dirac neutrino masses, and the model also requires the existence of at least four Dirac sterile neutrinos. Finally, we describe a general technique to write down chiral-fermions-only models that are at least anomaly-free under a $U(1)$ gauge symmetry.

Criteria for Natural Hierarchies

With the discovery of a particle that seems rather consistent with the minimal Standard Model Higgs boson, attention turns to questions of naturalness, fine-tuning, and what they imply for physics beyond the Standard Model and its discovery prospects at run II of the LHC. In this article we revisit the issue of naturalness, discussing some implicit assumptions that underly some of the most common statements, which tend to assign physical significance to certain regularization procedures. Vague arguments concerning fine-tuning can lead to conclusions that are too strong and perhaps not as generic as one would hope. Instead, we explore a more pragmatic definition of the hierarchy problem that does not rely on peeking beyond the murky boundaries of quantum field theory: we investigate the fine-tuning of the electroweak scale associated with thresholds from heavy particles, which is both calculable and dependent on the nature of the would-be ultraviolet completion of the Standard Model. We discuss different manifestations of new high-energy scales that are favored by experimental hints for new physics with an eye toward making use of fine-tuning in order to determine natural regions of the new physics parameter spaces.

Solar Neutrinos and the Decaying Neutrino Hypothesis

We explore, mostly using data from solar neutrino experiments, the hypothesis that the neutrino mass eigenstates are unstable. We find that, by combining $^8$B solar neutrino data with those on $^7$Be and lower-energy solar neutrinos, one obtains a mostly model-independent bound on both the $ν_1$ and $ν_2$ lifetimes. We comment on whether a nonzero neutrino decay width can improve the compatibility of the solar neutrino data with the massive neutrino hypothesis.

A Slant on Warped Extra Dimensions

We propose an orbifolded, warped, extra dimension scenario in which the visible brane is not parallel to the hidden brane. This leads automatically to Lorentz violation in the visible, four dimensional world. The background solution to the Einstein equations is a function of a parameter that can be identified with the amount of 'tilting' of the brane. The cosmological constant is found to coincide with the classic Randall-Sundrum value to first order in this tilt. Lorentz violating effects induced in the Standard Model are considered. We find that the strongest constraint on the tilt comes from determinations of the electron-proton mass ratio in six quasar spectra (four optical and two radio). Measurements of a third radio source could improve this by an order of magnitude.

Active to sterile neutrino oscillations: Coherence and MINOS results

We study the $ν_μ- ν_s$ oscillation effects in the near detector of the MINOS experiment. Conceptually, the MINOS search for sterile neutrinos with mass $\sim 1$ eV realizes an interesting situation of partial decoherence of the neutrino state at the production. This corresponds to a difference of energies of the two mass eigenstates that is comparable with or bigger than the width of the initial state (pion). We show that these effects modify the MINOS bound on mixing of sterile neutrino for $Δm^2_{41} \aprge 0.5$ eV$^2$ and make the experiment insensitive to oscillations with $Δm^2_{41} \gtrsim 15$ eV$^2$. Oscillations with $Δm^2_{41} = (1 - 3)$ eV$^2$ could explain some deficit of events observed in the low energy bins in the near detector and correspondingly the excess of events in the far detector.
