Fractional Chern insulators in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) are lattice analogues of fractional quantum Hall states that may provide a new avenue toward manipulating non-abelian excitations. Early theoretical studies have predicted their existence in systems with energetically flat Chern bands and highlighted the critical role of a particular quantum band geometry. Thus far, however, FCI states have only been observed in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (BLG/hBN), in which a very large magnetic field is responsible for the existence of the Chern bands, precluding the realization of FCIs at zero field and limiting its potential for applications. By contrast, magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) supports flat Chern bands at zero magnetic field, and therefore offers a promising route toward stabilizing zero-field FCIs. Here we report the observation of eight FCI states at low magnetic field in MATBG enabled by high-resolution local compressibility measurements. The first of these states emerge at 5 T, and their appearance is accompanied by the simultaneous disappearance of nearby topologically-trivial charge density wave states. Unlike the BLG/hBN platform, we demonstrate that the principal role of the weak magnetic field here is merely to redistribute the Berry curvature of the native Chern bands and thereby realize a quantum band geometry favorable for the emergence of FCIs. Our findings strongly suggest that FCIs may be realized at zero magnetic field and pave the way for the exploration and manipulation of anyonic excitations in moiré systems with native flat Chern bands.

Unusual magnetotransport in twisted bilayer graphene

We present transport measurements of bilayer graphene with 1.38° interlayer twist and apparent additional alignment to its hexagonal boron nitride cladding. As with other devices with twist angles substantially larger than the magic angle of 1.1°, we do not observe correlated insulating states or band reorganization. However, we do observe several highly unusual behaviors in magnetotransport. For a large range of densities around half filling of the moiré bands, magnetoresistance is large and quadratic. Over these same densities, the magnetoresistance minima corresponding to gaps between Landau levels split and bend as a function of density and field. We reproduce the same splitting and bending behavior in a simple tight-binding model of Hofstadter's butterfly on a square lattice with anisotropic hopping terms. These features appear to be a generic class of experimental manifestations of Hofstadter's butterfly and may provide insight into the emergent states of twisted bilayer graphene.

Half-magnetization plateau and the origin of threefold symmetry breaking in an electrically-switchable triangular antiferromagnet

We perform high-field magnetization measurements on the triangular lattice antiferromagnet Fe$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$. We observe a plateau in the magnetization centered at approximately half the saturation magnetization over a wide range of temperature and magnetic field. From density functional theory calculations, we determine a likely set of magnetic exchange constants. Incorporating these constants into a minimal Hamiltonian model of our material, we find that the plateau and of the $Z_3$ symmetry breaking ground state both arise from interplane and intraplane antiferromagnetic interactions acting in competition. These findings are pertinent to the magneto-electric properties of Fe$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$, which allow electrical switching of antiferromagnetic textures at relatively low current densities.

Local Matrix Product Operators: Canonical Form, Compression, & Control Theory

We present a new method for compressing matrix product operators (MPOs) which represent sums of local terms, such as Hamiltonians. Just as with area law states, such local operators may be fully specified with a small amount of information per site. Standard matrix product state (MPS) tools are ill-suited to this case, due to extensive Schmidt values that coexist with intensive ones, and Jordan blocks in the transfer matrix. We ameliorate these issues by introducing an "almost Schmidt decomposition" that respects locality. Our method is "$\varepsilon$-close" to the accuracy of MPS-based methods for finite MPOs, and extends seamlessly to the thermodynamic limit, where MPS techniques are inapplicable. In the framework of control theory, our method generalizes Kung's algorithm for model order reduction. Several examples are provided, including an all-MPO version of the operator recursion method (Lanczos algorithm) directly in the thermodynamic limit. All results are accompanied by practical algorithms, well-suited for the large MPOs that arise in DMRG for long-range or quasi-2D models.

Hedgehog Bases for A_n Cluster Polylogarithms and An Application to Six-Point Amplitudes

Multi-loop scattering amplitudes in N=4 Yang-Mills theory possess cluster algebra structure. In order to develop a computational framework which exploits this connection, we show how to construct bases of Goncharov polylogarithm functions, at any weight, whose symbol alphabet consists of cluster coordinates on the $A_n$ cluster algebra. Using such a basis we present a new expression for the 2-loop 6-particle NMHV amplitude which makes some of its cluster structure manifest.
