"Varopoulos paradigm": Mackey property vs. metrizability in topological groups

The class of all locally quasi-convex (lqc) abelian groups contains all locally convex vector spaces (lcs) considered as topological groups. Therefore it is natural to extend classical properties of locally convex spaces to this larger class of abelian topological groups. In the present paper we consider the following well known property of lcs: "A metrizable locally convex space carries its Mackey topology ". This claim cannot be extended to lqc-groups in the natural way, as we have recently proved with other coauthors (\cite{AD}, \cite{DMPT}). We say that an abelian group $G$ satisfies the \emph{Varopoulos paradigm} (VP) if any metrizable locally quasi-convex topology on $G$ is the Mackey topology. Surprisingly VP - which is a topological property of the group - is characterizes an algebraic feature, namely being of finite exponent.

Estructuras de grupo topológico en (Z,+)

In this work we have considered the complexity of the different structures as topological group on Z. We collect some new results, as well as some known results on the group of the integers in order to present: -A family of $2^\cont$ precompact Hausdorff. -A wide family of metrizable non-precompact, non-complete group topologies. -A wide family of complete non-metrizable topologies. We leave some open questions - for instance the problem of the cardinality of the families above.

Non metrizable topologies on Z with countable dual group

In this paper we give two families of non-metrizable topologies on the group of the integers having a countable dual group which is isomorphic to a infinite torsion subgroup of the unit circle in the complex plane. Both families are related to $D$-sequences, which are sequences of natural numbers such that each term divides the following. The first family consists of locally quasi-convex group topologies. The second consists of complete topologies which are not locally quasi-convex. In order to study the dual groups for both families we need to make numerical considerations of independent interest.

Linear topologies on $\Z$ are not Mackey topologies

In this article it is shown that to every non-discrete Hausdorff linear topology on $\Z$ other metrizable locally quasi-convex group topologies can be associated which are strictly finer than the linear topology and such that the character groups coincide. Applying this result to the $p$-adic topology on $\Z$, we give a negative answer to the question of Dikranjan, whether this topology is Mackey.
