From one Reeb orbit to two

We show that every (possibly degenerate) contact form on a closed three-manifold has at least two embedded Reeb orbits. We also show that if there are only finitely many embedded Reeb orbits, then their symplectic actions are not all integer multiples of a single real number; and if there are exactly two embedded Reeb orbits, then the product of their symplectic actions is less than or equal to the contact volume of the manifold. The proofs use a relation between the contact volume and the asymptotics of the amount of symplectic action needed to represent certain classes in embedded contact homology, recently proved by the authors and V. Ramos.

Ehrhart polynomials and symplectic embeddings of ellipsoids

McDuff and Schlenk determined when a four-dimensional ellipsoid can be symplectically embedded into a ball, and found that part of the answer is given by an infinite "Fibonacci staircase." Similarly, Frenkel and Müller determined when a four-dimensional ellipsoid can be symplectically embedded into the ellipsoid E(1,2) and found that part of the answer is given by a "Pell staircase." ECH capacities give an obstruction to symplectically embedding one four-dimensional ellipsoid into another, and McDuff showed that this obstruction is sharp. We use this result to give new proofs of the staircases of McDuff-Schlenk and Frenkel-Müller, and we prove that another infinite staircase arises for embeddings into the ellipsoid E(1,3/2). Our proofs relate these staircases to a combinatorial phenomenon of independent interest called "period collapse" of the Ehrhart quasipolynomial. In the appendix, we use McDuff's theorem to show that for a >= 6, the only obstruction to embedding an ellipsoid E(1,a) into a scaling of E(1,3/2) is the volume, and we also give new proofs of similar results for embeddings into scalings of E(1,1) and E(1,2).

The absolute gradings on embedded contact homology and Seiberg-Witten Floer cohomology

Let Y be a closed connected contact 3-manifold. In the series of papers "Embedded contact homology and Seiberg-Witten Floer cohomology I-V", Taubes defines an isomorphism between the embedded contact homology (ECH) of Y and its Seiberg-Witten Floer cohomology. Both the ECH of Y and the Seiberg-Witten Floer cohomology of Y admit absolute gradings by homotopy classes of oriented two-plane fields. We show that Taubes' isomorphism preserves these gradings. To do this, we prove another result relating the expected dimension of any component of the Seiberg-Witten moduli space over a completed connected symplectic cobordism to the ECH index of a corresponding homology class.

The asymptotics of ECH capacities

In a previous paper, the second author used embedded contact homology (ECH) of contact three-manifolds to define "ECH capacities" of four-dimensional symplectic manifolds. In the present paper we prove that for a four-dimensional Liouville domain with all ECH capacities finite, the asymptotics of the ECH capacities recover the symplectic volume. This follows from a more general theorem relating the volume of a contact three-manifold to the asymptotics of the amount of symplectic action needed to represent certain classes in ECH. The latter theorem was used by the first and second authors to show that every contact form on a closed three-manifold has at least two embedded Reeb orbits.
