Asymptotic issue for porous media systems with linear multiplicative gradient-type noise via state constrained arguments

The aim of the present paper is to provide necessary and sufficient conditions to maintain a stochastic coupled system, with porous media components and gradient-type noise in a prescribed set of constraints by using internal controls. This work is a continuation of the results in [10], as we consider the case of divergence type noise perturbation. On the other hand, it provides a different framework in which the quasi-tangency condition can be obtained with optimal speed. In comparison with the aforementioned result, here we transform the stochastic system into a random deterministic one, via the rescaling approach, then we study the viability of random sets. As an application, conditions for the stabilization of the stochastic porous media equations are obtained.

Linearisation Techniques and the Dual Algorithm for a Class of Mixed Singular/Continuous Control Problems in Reinsurance. Part I: Theoretical Aspects

This paper focuses on linearisation techniques for a class of mixed singular/continuous control problems and ensuing algorithms. The motivation comes from (re)insurance problems with reserve-dependent premiums with Cram{é}r-Lundberg claims, by allowing singular dividend payments and capital injections. Using variational techniques and embedding the trajectories in an appropriate family of occupation measures, we provide the linearisation of such problems in which the continuous control is given by reinsurance policies and the singular one by dividends and capital injections. The linearisation translates into a dual dynamic programming (DDP) algorithm. An important part of the paper is dedicated to structural considerations allowing reasonable implementation. We also hint connections to methods relying on moment sum of squares and LMI (linear matrix inequality)-relaxations to approximate the optimal candidates.

On matrix-SIR Arino models with linear birth rate, loss of immunity, disease and vaccination fatalities, and their approximations

In this work we study the stability properties of the equilibrium points of deterministic epidemic models with nonconstant population size. Models with nonconstant population have been studied in the past only in particular cases, two of which we review and combine. Our main result shows that for simple "matrix epidemic models" introduced in [1], an explicit general formula for the reproduction number and the corresponding "weak stability alternative" still holds, under small modifications, for models with nonconstant population size, and even when the model allows for vaccination and loss of immunity. The importance of this result is clear once we note that the models of [1] include a large number of viral and bacterial models of epidemic propagation, including for example the totality of homogeneous COVID-19 models. To better understand the nature of the result, we emphasize that the models proposed in [1] and considered here are extensions of the SIR-PH model, which is essentially characterized by a phase-type distribution that models transitions between the "disease/infectious compartments". In these cases, the reproduction number and a certain Lyapunov function for the disease free equilibrium are explicitly expressible. Not surprisingly, accounting for varying demography, loss of immunity, and vaccinations lead to several challenges. One of the most important is that a varying population size leads to multiple endemic equilibrium points: this is in contrast with "classic models" which in general admit unique disease-free and endemic equilibria. As a special case of our analysis, we consider a "first approximation" (FA) of our model, which coincides with the constant-demography model often studied in the literature, and for which more explicit results are available. Furthermore, we propose a second heuristic approximation named "intermediate approximation" (IA).

SIR Epidemics With State-Dependent Costs and ICU Constraints: A Hamilton-Jacobi Verification Argument and Dual LP Algorithms

The aim of this paper is twofold. On one hand, we strive to give a simpler proof of the optimality of greedy controls when the cost of interventions is control-affine and the dynamics follow a state-constrained controlled SIR model. This is achieved using the Hamilton-Jacobi characterization of the value function, via the verification argument and explicit trajectorybased computations. Aside from providing an alternative to the Pontryagin complex arguments in [5], this method allows one to consider more general classes of costs; in particular statedependent ones. On the other hand, the paper is completed by linear programming methods allowing to deal with possibly discontinuous costs. In particular, we propose a brief exposition of classes of linearized dynamic programming principles based on our previous work and ensuing dual linear programming algorithms. We emphasize the particularities of our state space and possible generations of forward scenarios using the description of reachable sets.

State-constrained porous media control systems with application to stabilization

We aim at providing a characterization of the ability to maintain a stochastic coupled system with porous media components in a prescribed set of constraints by using internal controls. This property is proven via a quasi-tangency local-in-time condition in the spirit of Euler approximation schemes. In particular, by employing one of the components of the system as asymptotic supervisor, we give conditions guaranteeing the exponential asymptotic stabilizability of controlled porous media equations.

Optimizing dividends and capital injections limited by bankruptcy, and practical approximations for the Cramér-Lundberg process

The recent papers Gajek-Kucinsky(2017) and Avram-Goreac-Li-Wu(2020) investigated the control problem of optimizing dividends when limiting capital injections stopped upon bankruptcy. The first paper works under the spectrally negative Lévy model; the second works under the Cramér-Lundberg model with exponential jumps, where the results are considerably more explicit. The current paper has three purposes. First, it illustrates the fact that quite reasonable approximations of the general problem may be obtained using the particular exponential case studied in Avram-Goreac-Li-Wu(2020). Secondly, it extends the results to the case when a final penalty $P$ is taken into consideration as well besides a proportional cost $k>1$ for capital injections. This requires amending the "scale and Gerber-Shiu functions" already introduced in Gajek-Kucinsky(2017). Thirdly, in the exponential case, the results will be made even more explicit by employing the Lambert-W function. This tool has particular importance in computational aspects and can be employed in theoretical aspects such as asymptotics.

Approximate and Approximate Null-Controllability of a Class of Piecewise Linear Markov Switch Systems

We propose an explicit, easily-computable algebraic criterion for approximate null-controllability of a class of general piecewise linear switch systems with multiplicative noise. This gives an answer to the general problem left open in [13]. The proof relies on recent results in [4] allowing to reduce the dual stochastic backward system to a family of ordinary differential equations. Second, we prove by examples that the notion of approximate controllability is strictly stronger than approximate null-controllability. A sufficient criterion for this stronger notion is also provided. The results are illustrated on a model derived from repressed bacterium operon (given in [19] and reduced in [5]).

Controllability Metrics on Networks with Linear Decision Process-type Interactions and Multiplicative Noise

This paper aims at the study of controllability properties and induced controllability metrics on complex networks governed by a class of (discrete time) linear decision processes with mul-tiplicative noise. The dynamics are given by a couple consisting of a Markov trend and a linear decision process for which both the "deterministic" and the noise components rely on trend-dependent matrices. We discuss approximate, approximate null and exact null-controllability. Several examples are given to illustrate the links between these concepts and to compare our results with their continuous-time counterpart (given in [16]). We introduce a class of backward stochastic Riccati difference schemes (BSRDS) and study their solvability for particular frameworks. These BSRDS allow one to introduce Gramian-like controllability metrics. As application of these metrics, we propose a minimal intervention-targeted reduction in the study of gene networks.

Nonequivalence of Controllability Properties for Piecewise Linear Markov Switch Processes

In this paper we study the exact null-controllability property for a class of controlled PDMP of switch type with switch-dependent, piecewise linear dynamics and multiplicative jumps. First, we show that exact null-controllability induces a con-trollability metric. This metric is linked to a class of backward stochastic Riccati equations. Using arguments similar to the euclidian-valued BSDE in [4], the equation is shown to be equivalent to an iterative family of deterministic Riccati equations that are solvable. Second, we give an example showing that, for switch-dependent coefficients, exact null-controllability is strictly stronger than approximate null-controllability. Finally, we show by convenient examples that no hierarchy holds between approximate (full) controllability and exact null-controllability. The paper is intended as a complement to [15] and [14].

A Piecewise Deterministic Markov Toy Model for Traffic/Maintenance and Associated Hamilton-Jacobi Integrodifferential Systems on Networks

We study optimal control problems in infinite horizon when the dynamics belong to a specific class of piecewise deterministic Markov processes constrained to star-shaped networks (inspired by traffic models). We adapt the results in [H. M. Soner. Optimal control with state-space constraint. II. SIAM J. Control Optim., 24(6):1110.1122, 1986] to prove the regularity of the value function and the dynamic programming principle. Extending the networks and Krylov's ''shaking the coefficients'' method, we prove that the value function can be seen as the solution to a linearized optimization problem set on a convenient set of probability measures. The approach relies entirely on viscosity arguments. As a by-product, the dual formulation guarantees that the value function is the pointwise supremum over regular subsolutions of the associated Hamilton-Jacobi integrodifferential system. This ensures that the value function satisfies Perron's preconization for the (unique) candidate to viscosity solution. Finally, we prove that the same kind of linearization can be obtained by combining linearization for classical (unconstrained) problems and cost penalization. The latter method works for very general near-viable systems (possibly without further controllability) and discontinuous costs.

Algebraic Invariance Conditions in the Study of Approximate (Null-)Controllability of Markov Switch Processes

We aim at studying approximate null-controllability properties of a particular class of piecewise linear Markov processes (Markovian switch systems). The criteria are given in terms of algebraic invariance and are easily computable. We propose several necessary conditions and a sufficient one. The hierarchy between these conditions is studied via suitable counterexamples. Equivalence criteria are given in abstract form for general dynamics and algebraic form for systems with constant coefficients or continuous switching. The problem is motivated by the study of lysis phenomena in biological organisms and price prediction on spike-driven commodities.

Asymptotic Control for a Class of Piecewise Deterministic Markov Processes Associated to Temperate Viruses

We aim at characterizing the asymptotic behavior of value functions in the control of piece-wise deterministic Markov processes (PDMP) of switch type under nonexpansive assumptions. For a particular class of processes inspired by temperate viruses, we show that uniform limits of discounted problems as the discount decreases to zero and time-averaged problems as the time horizon increases to infinity exist and coincide. The arguments allow the limit value to depend on initial configuration of the system and do not require dissipative properties on the dynamics. The approach strongly relies on viscosity techniques, linear programming arguments and coupling via random measures associated to PDMP. As an intermediate step in our approach, we present the approximation of discounted value functions when using piecewise constant (in time) open-loop policies.

A Criterion for the Viability of Stochastic Semilinear Control Systems via the Quasi-Tangency Condition

In this paper we study a criterion for the viability of stochastic semilinear control systems on a real, separable Hilbert space. The necessary and sufficient conditions are given using the notion of stochastic quasi-tangency. As a consequence, we prove that approximate viability and the viability property coincide for stochastic linear control systems. We obtain Nagumo's stochastic theorem and we present a method allowing to provide explicit criteria for the viability of smooth sets. We analyze the conditions characterizing the viability of the unit ball. The paper generalizes recent results from the deterministic framework.
