Mean-field predictions for a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate with $^{164}$Dy

We study dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates for a realistic set of parameters close to actual experimental setups with dysprosium. Our analysis is based on the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which we solve numerically exact on a three-dimensional grid. We present stability and phase diagrams, and study the expansion dynamics of dipolar condensates. Our calculations show signatures of the dipole-dipole interaction in terms of structured states and a deviation of the well-known inversion of the aspect ratio of the cloud during a time of flight.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in triple-well potentials

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in triple-well potentials are well-suited model systems for periodic optical potentials with important contributions of the non-local and anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction, which show a variety of effects such as self-organisation and formation of patterns. We address here a macroscopic sample of dipolar bosons in the mean-field limit. This work is based on the Gross-Pitaevskii description of dipolar condensates in triple-well potentials by Peter et al 2012 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 45 225302. Our analysis goes beyond the calculation of ground states presented there and clarifies the role of excited and metastable states in such systems. In particular, we find the formation of phases originating from the interplay of several states with distinct stability properties. As some of the phases are formed by metastable states special attention is paid to the characteristics of phase transitions in real-time and the dynamical stabilisation of the condensate.

Hartree-Fock calculations for the photoionisation of helium and helium-like ions in neutron star magnetic fields

We derive the photoionisation cross section in dipole approximation for many-electron atoms and ions for neutron star magnetic field strengths in the range of 10^7 to 10^9 T. Both bound and continuum states are treated in adiabatic approximation in a self-consistent way. Bound states are calculated by solving the Hartree-Fock-Roothaan equations using finite-element and B-spline techniques while the continuum orbital is calculated by direct integration of the Hartree-Fock equations in the mean-field potential of the remaining bound orbitals. We take into account mass and photon density in the neutron star's atmosphere, finite nuclear mass as well as thermal occupation of the levels. The data may be of importance for the quantitative interpretation of observed x-ray spectra that originate from the thermal emission of isolated neutron stars. They can serve as input for modeling neutron star atmospheres as regards chemical composition, magnetic field strength, temperature, and redshift. Our main focus in this paper lies on helium and helium-like oxygen. These two-electron systems are simple enough to calculate all possible transitions when limiting the quantum numbers and should show all the basic structures and behaviour of other two-electron systems up to iron.

Collisions of anisotropic two-dimensional bright solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the coherent collision of anisotropic quasi-two-dimensional bright solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. Our analysis is based on the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and we use the split-operator method for the grid calculations and the time-dependent variational principle with an ansatz of coupled Gaussian functions to calculate the time evolution of the ground state. We compare the results of both approaches for collisions where initially the solitons are in the repelling side-by-side configuration and move towards each other with a specific momentum. We change the relative phases of the condensates, and introduce a total angular momentum by shifting the solitons in opposite direction along the polarization axis. Our calculations show that collisions result in breathing-mode-like excitations of the solitons.

Creating two-dimensional bright solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose a realistic experimental setup for creating quasi-two-dimensional (2D) bright solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), the existence of which was proposed in Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 090406 (2008). A challenging feature of the expected solitons is their strong inherent anisotropy, due to the necessary in-plane orientation of the local moments in the dipolar gas. This may be the first chance of making multidimensional matter-wave solitons, as well as solitons featuring the anistropy due to their intrinsic dynamics. Our analysis is based on the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which includes three-body losses and noise in the scattering length, induced by fluctuations of currents inducing the necessary magnetic fields, which are factors crucial to the adequate description of experimental conditions. By means of systematic 3D simulations, we find a ramping scenario for the change of the scattering length and trap frequencies which results in the creation of robust solitons, that readily withstand the concomitant excitation of the condensate.
